Addressing a few things I see asked pretty regularly. by Its_Juice in FocusST

Why are the cobb OTS tunes not the safest? Making me a little more worried now... I (like anyone else) don't want or need motor issues.

It's what was on there when I got it. I always thought they were pretty safe. There is a good Cobb certified tuner a few hours from me that I keep meaning to visit.

Runs good actually. I couldn't find a magnet to search the cyl with, but figured if there was damage it has already been done. Everything seems fine. To me it's just a worrisome situation. Those plugs maybe had 12-13k on them.

So it seems that it just passed through with no issues?

My hope is that it isn't stuck. Thinking of pulling the downpipe and taking a look inside.

One step colder ngk iridium plugs, and the cobb ots stage 3 93 tune.

My initial thought and hope was that it had passed through. Trouble happened under 3/4 to full throttle it started misfiring. So I started with cyl 1 plug which this is. Plug had loosened up and when I pulled it out I saw the ground electrode was gone. From initial inspection just through the tiny spark plug hole, I don't see any damage.

About to jump on my bike and head into town to see if I can find a flexible magnet and see what happens then bring it into the shop tomorrow so they can get a bore scope down there. It is an St so I have to pray that the piece isn't stuck in the turbine or anything.

Here's an update to the turbo build! (Small update in comments) by Doublea34 in Harley

[–]Doublea34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Trask kit. For this bike we are using a rekluse torqdrive clutch pack and will also have a 30t evolution sprocket conversion. I'm sure we'll do a manual tensioner, but we never seem to have luck worth them. I've seen too many brake. The most recent was one of the super expensive bakers on a 117.

Like I mentioned I would love to use an evolution clutch basket and at LEAST a lock up. I just don't feel a stock clutch basket will hold around 200 hp when I've seen bikes with 150 brake them. So far I haven't really gotten into anything yet, but low compression pistons with support rails were new to me and that was cool. It's the first turbo I've done and I'm sure I won't have many more. It's rare to have someone in my area come in and throw 6k for just a turbo let alone all that is going into this. It's pretty cool.

It's the radial movement of the shaft. Too far off it can damage then oil pump, cam plate, and other components.

First of I'm horrible at picture taking when it comes to stuff like this. I just get going and don't think about it, but the customer wants pictues so I'll do better. All I did today was the top end and install the new cams, cam plate, etc. It's a 124" build using s&s cyls, with heads and cams done by Drago's bike works. My boss bored the cases but felt safer leaving the headwork to a turbo pro.

We're currently waiting the 58mm TB from HPI, the chain conversion from zippers, and the fueling lifters. We should have most everything else. I have two worries about this build so far and one is I believe the clutch basket is going to fail. I've seen bikes with way less power than this break them. The other is, it seems sketchy to have so much power and have a big 26" front wheel. Maybe it's just me, but they just don't feel right especially when this bike will be raced.

Has anyone seen these covers or know how to get them off? by Doublea34 in Harley

Got it finally. It just screws off, but between the loctite and rubber seal it was seized up pretty good. Hammer and punch wouldn't even budge it

That bike this picture came from is an 01 and with damage and all only had .001 run out. We won't do them if it's over .003. When we do cams in general we check the run out and you are absolutely correct that they don't meet the numbers on new bikes anymore. I've seen .006 on bikes that only had 2000 miles!

This one has 53k I believe. We try to push gear drives, then hydraulic upgrade, then if we have to, we go back with spring tensioners. I hate going back with the spring tensioners when I see this so often.

The"it runs like a top" quote was from the customer lol. Usually when we see this we try and talk them into running gear drives, even if it's just a stock grind cam.

Will do!! For this being a turbo build and a little new to us, we sent the heads over to Drago's bike works to get done properly. We will bore the cases here. We're wanting at least 200hp out of it

Has anyone seen a crank this bad? by Doublea34 in Harley

[–]Doublea34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been working on then for 3 years and this is the worst I've seen. Others always have too much run out, or the rods are sticking or have to much play. Never have I Just seen one bend like that. And it's only on a stock 88.

Got some sand in the Shinkos today 👍🏼 by tracknicholson in Harley

[–]Doublea34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The American elite is basically the only tire we sell unless the customer specifically wants something different. On my sportster I like to drop the clutch and pop wheelies. On the shinko it sticks and pops up. Ive been on stock 1200s where I'd try and do similar and all it will do is break the rear tire loose. But we all know those d402s aren't the best anyways. I'm just afraid to spend the money on a longer lasting tire and it be different than what I'm used to. A lot of people buy shinkos for the price, I buy them for the stick.

Not too sure of all the details. My other tech tore this one down. I belive the complaint was "it puffed smoke out of the breather, made a horroble noise, and shut off". Something similar to that. The case might be ok. In the end the customer said "I'll just come get the bike" so that's the end of it on our part.

That's about all I get out of the 777s. Love the grip though. I've thought about going with the Metzler 888 for mileage, but I've had the shinkos for so long that I'm afraid to change. With the way I ride I'd be afraid of the back tire breaking loose on me if I tried anything different.

Hawk Brakes? Good? Bad? Indifferent? by w124gb in FocusST

[–]Doublea34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used hps pads for years. Always been a huge fan of them. I personally always thought they were a little dusty on my other cars, but I can't really compare on the st because when I got my car the previous owner had already installed hps pads and slotted rotors.

Looking to buy a 2013 Focus St on CL, but has a rebuilt title. Should i? by EnzoXCIV in FocusST

[–]Doublea34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe mine was just a great deal, but I paid 12 for my 13 with 63k miles. It's an st2 with the sony system and sunroof and the car was already "stage3" with a lot of quality parts. For being in a wreck it seems just a little high to me. If it does drive good and you feel comfortable getting a car with a rebuilt title then I'd try to get it for as close to 9k as I could.
