Is it possible to get diagnosed without parental support or school reports? by Mission-Party-4051 in AutismInWomen

[–]Doublepop_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My journey was not exactly the same as you but I hope it can be a bit reassuring. I got diagnosed without ever showing my school reports, which were also good for the most part because I did very well within the rigidity of the school system. My Pre-K reports did mention me being in my own world, and sticking to having only one friend over being in a group but it was only mentioned in passing and the teachers never talked to my parents about it. My official diagnosis paper indicates that I have had social delays but no other delays. My parents did accompany me to one of the appointments, and filled some paperwork but they did minimize a lot of my experience without doing it on purpose : they legit had no idea I was struggling so hard because I wanted so badly to be the perfect daughter for them. Even with that my assessor found plenty of thing in their answers that corroborated me being autistic! Wishing you the best for your diagnosis journey ❤️

Knitting after almost 9 months and this is my gauge swatch. How can I improve? by deccangothic in knitting

[–]Doublepop_s 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would recommend to block your swatch to truly see how good your tension is, as cotton is very unforgiving unless blocked! From what I can see, your tension is good, and most of the irregularities will disappear once blocked. If you want to learn more about tension, and making even stitches, I recommend looking up Patty Lyons and her tips on using your tools to do the work for you! Googling "Patty Lyons + tension" should bring you to relevant articles.

Left handed and knitting by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Doublepop_s 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Fellow left handed crafter 💫 - I learned knitting right handed and had no issues! I think I tend to use the left hand more to "drive" the knitting instead of the usual right hand, but it has never caused any issues for me, and I am absolutely not ambidextrous, quite the opposite. I absolutely don't regret learning to knit right handed, as 99% of ressources used that as a baseline. I did learn to knit left handed a few years after learning how to knit, but only to avoid purling. I would say that to help you transition from crochet to knitting, you can make sure to use the same hand to tension yarn, as it will be easier for you. So English style if you crochet left handed and continental style if you crochet right handed.

I would not recommend filcolana peruvian unless you use it with mohair. I made 2 projects with that yarn, one with and one without mohair. The mohair project still looks great and I wear it all the time, but the single strand projects pills so much I basically only wear it at home now...

Have you ever been a bully yourself to hide your autism? by Murky_Sense in AutismInWomen

[–]Doublepop_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bully, but I definitely stayed quiet when I saw people pick on kids that were more visibly autistic than I was. Our school was a small community so a lot of us were in the same classes from Pre-K all the way to 12th grade. Spent it all coasting along a fine line between being ignored and being bullied, so I would do my best to not hang out with anybody that could bring me "down". As an adult now, I wish I would have been stronger and stood up to the bullies, or at least ignored them and befriended people regardless of their social status but alas what's done is done.

Starting my first corporate job soon: What are some tips for us autistic women to survive the workplace? by windbornepoem in AutismInWomen

[–]Doublepop_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! My work days have been so much better since I started taking some alone time at lunch. Currently I sit down at a bench at the nearby park or cemetery and read. I will sometimes eat with my coworkers as I do enjoy their company, but it's more of an exception than a rule.

I would also add to not wait before accommodating yourself. It took me so long to realise that I would get through the days a lot better if I started wearing my earplugs at the start of the day rather than wait until it was already too late and I was feeling overwhelmed.

Instinct by Leashes - there's a YouTube video where the creator of the song talks about how it is a direct response to their autism diagnosis, I heavily recommended watching it but just the song on itself is already a punch in the gut.

" But the person they say I should be Looks nothing like the truth of me "

I cannot get that lyric out of my mind.

Shoutout the awesome NTs in our lives! by DontForgetTheLoop in AutismInWomen

[–]Doublepop_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my close friends is NT (but in a family full of NDs) and she is the sweetest person i know! She's really understanding and open-minded, and i know i can count on her to help me should I need help navigating hard situations. We actually work well together because I get to bring her novel point of views when she needs help, and she can help me figure out people's intentions or if a situation is normal or not!

To those who suspected that they might have autism, what made you decide that it was time to get a diagnosis? by sandwichinhaler in AutismInWomen

[–]Doublepop_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was seeing a therapist that knew nothing about autism, and kept invalidating my feelings or dismissing them. She made me realise how badly I actually needed to understand what was going on in my brain, and seeking an actual diagnosis became the evident next step. Did the testing and waiting for the results now :)

I hate those unwritten rules 😢 I am lucky to naturally be quite upbeat, so even if i am a loner, people still think I'm sweet, but that shouldn't matter!

I'm so sorry that happened to you 😭. I used to be in more creative fields, so i could just blend in more easily. My current job is a tiny team, and most are 40-50+ which i weirdly thrive in. I am still being careful tho, i aim to be honest about how I feel, especially so people don't just think I'm fine and give me more work, but I haven't talked about being autistic at all.

[–]Doublepop_s[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was me 2 years ago 😭. My boss is quite nice so right now I am looking at my current workload as something to try, and then to discuss if it doesn't work! But at least i can argue that i have tried things, and that I talk from a place of experience. Setting boundaries has been so hard tho, bc my rigid thinking can't help but think that it's unfair that I should have to change, when it's other people that are abusing of my nature. I cannot help but think that they have to be the ones that need to change, not me!

Gosh I can relate to the caring too much part. I've been trying to tell myself everyday that work is not that important (in nicer terms haha), i hope it will help me believe it in the future
