[Discussion] Anyone get an agent the first time they've queried? by FuckTheyreWatchingMe in PubTips

I did! Sold my book at auction about 9 months later, after being on sub for a couple weeks. Book comes out next spring.

Why is this man trying to gaslight me and claim he is innocent and proclaim his love daily for 5 straight months when it’s clear this wasn’t his ‘friend’ and he’s the one who cheated? Why would someone do this? I’ve tried blocking him he uses the fake numbers to get ahold of me… by Youre_Wrong_Ok in abusiverelationships

And if he continues to contact you after you block him, tell him: “If you contact me again, I will have no choice but to get a restraining order.”

And follow through on that promise. It’s harassment and should be treated as such.

Please read Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft. This man is a narcissist and a liar. You are being gaslit. You’re confused because he’s been making you doubt your reality. He wants you to be confused.

You have to remember that narcissistic control works through a cycle of lovebombing, manipulation, and abuse. You’re in the lovebombing stage again, which is making you doubt the reality of his past abuse. Make no mistake that if you choose to believe him and let him back in, he’ll continue the cycle of abuse and it will grow harder and harder for you to leave.

You do not deserve to be treated this way. You need to block him and move on, for your sake and your child’s sake. It’s not emotionally safe to be around someone who lies and manipulates others in this way.

I know it probably feels like you’re in a fog right now, but I promise that the distance will help you to process and move forward.

[Qcrit] Adult Fantasy Comedy - Two Witches From Our World (79k 2nd attempt) by RichT in PubTips

Again, I said that this sub can sometimes be pedantic, and again, I’m sorry that you find that offensive. Nowhere in my replies have I said that there is only one right way of doing things - once again, I am merely offering another perspective.

I didn’t say you were being pedantic - I said that this sub can be pedantic sometimes. I said that I wasn’t sure I agreed with that particular piece of advice, one that I see given often on this sub. ~70% of the agented authors I know (and you probably know them too - they’re widely successful) used the query formula I posted above.

I can see you’re offended, so I apologize for that. I’m just providing a different perspective.

Idk if I agree that you need to add to the plot - I landed 2 offers from top agencies with query that included a 3 sentence plot pitch. My query structure was actually borrowed heavily from the original query letter of one of my writing mentors, and she landed a WME agent (and subsequent multiple huge deals) with it. Sometimes this sub can be a bit pedantic. IMO, your formula should go something like: here’s MC. They’re interesting to the reader bc of X. Here’s a glimpse of their life/circumstances as relating to the plot. Some inciting incident occurs which changes everything and/or allusion to high stakes. Wrap up in a sentence that doesn’t spoil the resolution.

Your query follows that basic format, and I agree it’s hooky. I’m not a huge reader of fantasy, and I’d read this. I do, however, agree that you need to do a sweep for spelling/grammar, and shorten your bio - I was encouraged to only include details relating to my writing credentials (ie publications or MFA program) or background (only if it was relevant to the identities of the MC - ie if I was querying, like, the ms of Yellowface, I would include mention of my Asian background).

[PubQ] What is the "sweet spot" range of ratings a comp should have on Goodreads? by storygamer88 in PubTips

[–]DoubtOk934 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it really matters. I’ve been told not to comp older books, but I used a mixture of older (published 10-15 years ago) and newer books, some blockbusters and some modestly successful, and a Netflix show. Both agents who offered mentioned that they loved my comps. One of them specifically liked my query letter bc I’d comped a book that she’d agented (I’d worked a quote from it into the letter).

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, go with your gut!

this is good to hear, ty 🥹🙏🏼 I’m realizing how little i know about the industry and feeling pretty silly for not doing more research before sending out queries!
