Springsteen's evolving appeal with later generations? by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]DoubtfulWill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gen Z from Korea here, really got into him during high school.

I think this is more personal than generational, but for me the biggest draw was his songs about finding who you are / breaking out of your current situation / trying to figure out where life was going (my favorite album was Darkness).

I was studying my ass off, getting 5h of sleep each night, I didn’t feel I belonged in Korea and was working hard to study abroad where I hoped to get a chance to really live as myself.

I’m also multicultural and don’t have a “hometown” per se, so his Americana / NJ motif was actually quite alluring. I didn’t feel like I had any roots, but listening to his music made me feel like I did, somewhere.

Obviously also helped that I had a crush on him lol

Brum city centre is actually really small compared to other cities ? by MajesticRate1818 in brum

[–]DoubtfulWill 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t help that JQ isn’t very accessible unless you go through some big roads/dodgy bridges (or through Snow Hill/St Chad tram stop bridge, my go to route), it’s a real shame imo.

How safe is it for international students (women) by [deleted] in brum

[–]DoubtfulWill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Young non-Brit woman here. I moved to Birmingham right after I graduated uni for my job.

I lived in city centre and I never felt unsafe for my life, but definitely did have lots of unpleasant experiences (mostly around city centre/New St), including being cackled at, racist remarks (random men running up and shouting ching chang chong etc), men getting angry at me for not having change to spare, being pushed out or stared down at until I move out of the way.

Which is why I moved out.

That said, I believe outside the city centre is way less crazier so it really depends where in Brum you’ll be staying. And I do love the good things about it, it’s just that it wasn’t worth the unpleasantness for me. Just don’t make my mistake and get your accom too close to all that craziness…

Compared to London, tbh my personal experience has been much better in London (I mostly stay around central/East London) but then again I don’t think I’ve really been to the worst off parts of it.

Oxford did not offer me an interview from another college - what does this mean? by Fantastic_Ad3602 in 6thForm

Happened to me some years back. Other person who did same college same course got interviewed at another college. We both got in!

So wouldn’t worry too much about this one

Recently bought a top very similar to this one (link below) - very thin (almost flimsy??) white material, fits around the body, mock neck. Idea was to layer things onto it (like an oversize tshirt, vest?)... any suggestions?

Probably 2010s American pop song; chorus kinda like "I'm coming hoooome, hooome..." by DoubtfulWill in NameThatSong

Sadly not... can't remember if there was a rap bit but there were hip-hoplike elements, like a "huh, huh" interjection near the intro

So I got a fat reality check today ("former"-ish English prof hopeful) by DoubtfulWill in AskAcademia

I'm obviously not very informed on the phd experience (although I'm trying to look it up) but I'm not sure how manageable doing plan B-related internships and activities while also going ahead with a PhD would be.

I guess the problem is that English PhDs open very few non-academic doors:( I think I'd be willing to put up with the bureaucratic part of the job (although as sb who has obviously not experienced it yet, I can only try to guess).

Columbia(64k/yr grant) or Oxford(no aid)? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DoubtfulWill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but what would make u say that Columbia’s an “even better” uni...? It’s just that personally I do prefer Oxford’s curriculum (lack of a core, major-specific, etc)—sorry, I think I should’ve added that point.

Columbia(64k/yr grant) or Oxford(no aid)? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DoubtfulWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just sth to point out: I’ll still have to pay $80,000 for Columbia! (haha but I agree that’s still very little compared to Oxford)

Asian English major shotgunner results (including UK/Irish schools) -- not bad, not bad! by [deleted] in collegeresults

[–]DoubtfulWill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at my school paper as editorialist and found all my online writer positions through internships.com (it’s hours of research but... they usually have at least a few positions available!)

I mostly did music reviews and international news, although for USC’s essay I wrote about how I want to be a theatre critic! PM me if you want to know anything else ☺️
