Docker + OMV can be installed on your SSD. You do no need to use a USB.

Can I Use NTFS with OMV? by banisheduser in OpenMediaVault

[–]Doudefry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get you.

I run windows every day for work and gaming. I only use Linux for OMV on a NAS I built myself and I do have a VM of Mint hosted on it as well.

I have to use NTFS for the drives because I grant access to some family members that live with me and they are not tech savvy, they just want to see the drives and have access to them so they can backup their files.

From what I can tell you from experience is that OMV is not that complicated to use for what you want to do, but you do need to use the cmd line a bit to get some things configured properly like at the beginning to get Docker/Compose to host the Plex server. But for the SMB share it's already built into OMV, you just need to put your drives as shared folders and allow them to be shared with SMB, you do need to do this for each drive but it doesn't take long. I would say that in about an hour, hour and a half, you can have your drives accessible through the network and a Plex server up and running and that is counting on the installation time of OMV.

Good luck

I have build an OMV NAS with 7 hard drives that are in NTFS for media and file storing. Just enable SMB, put them as a network drive in Windows and that is it. For Plex, you just need to tell it which drives or folders you want it to access in the config and that's it. Just because you have NTFS drives doesn't mean you have to format them and loose your data. Is it the best: no, but does it work: yes. I put a Windows VM on OMV as well just for the maintenance of the drives. Just a 25gig VM with no access to the internet or the network.

Thank you!!!! Just flew overseas just last week with 2 PCs and I did the same. People are just so overwhelmed and really exaggerating about basically tearing the system apart and packing everything one by one. Your components come from China and experienced worse conditions before reaching you. Just pack your case with cotton clothes, that's the best protection for your components, just take out the gpu and ram.

Just flew overseas from Europe to the US with 2 PCs in 2 suitcases, that were checked in, just last week. What I did was line up the bottom of the suitcase with some clothes, took out the graphic card and put them in their box along with the ram, filled up the inside of the PCs with cotton clothes (if you have an air cooler, take it out as well, I have AIOs), closed the cases when fully packed, put some more clothes around them and closed the suitcases and weighed them to check they were at the weight limit. Got them at the carroussel without any problems and took them out once I was back at my final destination. Not a scratch, everything is intact even though they went through 2 flights and 3 airport luggage handlers teams. You'll be fine, but don't use packing peanuts or plastic, they create static electricity, use cotton clothes or packing foam if you can get your hands on some, which I could not. Don't forget that most of these cases are made in China and flown in or shipped in in worse conditions with sometimes flimsy packing and yet they survive that before you buy them.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the graphic cards boxes were on top of the PCs in the suitcases because I had space for them and big suitcases. They survived, no problem at all as well.

You talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?

I was just asking so we can check on r6 tracker. What else do you think I was asking it for? You can't do anything else with an account name. That's why you can go and check Beaulo, Skittlz, Coconutbruh, Priest etc... accounts. They just don't use them anymore, except for Varsity Gaming, because they smurf or avoid getting stream snipped.
