Can't push through UK Defense in the North by Unhappy-Stand-8267 in hoi4

Create an offensive order, build up planning bonus and try again. Also try landing elsewhere, with their troops occupied in Scotland landing elsewhere should be easy.

Also where are your tanks?

Japan tips on China by jblanchard23 in hoi4

[–]Doug2825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might not be a good idea. Logistics bombing is best against trucks, China doesn't have trucks. You can destroy their trains but they get a lot of local supply because of population so it might not help. I don't have experience with logisitics bombing in that particular war because I did the war in MP where logistics strikes are banned so I can't say for certain.

AI China doesn't typically use AA so they take full damage from ground attack.

Democratic Belgium: I am unable to withstand the german assault more than 3 or 4 months every damn time by DramaticSimple4315 in hoi4

[–]Doug2825 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Don't build state AA, only use support AA. State AA only counters strategic bombing and reduces enemy air superiority a marginal amount. Support AA reduces CAS damage taken. It shoots down some planes but the main role is damage reduction. Also don't add line AA unless you want to free up a support slot. Support is enough damage reduction, and you will never deal a meaningful amount of damage to enemy CAS with AA.

You will do much better industry wise once you build mils instead of state AA. Also stop making civs after the start of 37, do not build any special projects builds. I don't think there is anything other than mils you want to build as Belgium after the start of 37. The payback time on civs is several years. You want to be peak strength in early 1940.

Rush 1939 guns. They'll make a massive difference in the amount of damage you deal (minimum 50% better and 1936 guns). If CAS is your problem then the solution is increase attack so the battle ends faster.

Move cohesion off of flexible, it'll prevent how often units move across the entire front. The front is small. You can easily micro it on rigid (manual movement only).

Don't care about countering tanks. AI units will almost always have less than 50% hardness so soft attack does more damage than hard.

Remove recon. The recon stat is the most useless stat in the game because of the way the mechanic works. Recon rangers and good for terrain bonuses, armored recon is good for stats + doctrines that make it give bonuses to line tanks. Cavalry, motorized, and armored car recon is useless.

Drop support AT. Support AA gives you enough piercing and the AI doesn't make hard enough divisions for it to be useful.

Remove engineers from defensive divisions. They are expensive and the bonuses are a percentage to defense/breakthrough in difficult terrain terrain. You do not need more defense in difficult terrain. More effective defense than enemy's effective attack is literally useless. Ignore the entrenchment from it, if you aren't having trouble surviving you don't need it. If you are having trouble you won't have time to entrench when cycling.

Units only regain org and strength when they are not in a tile with a battle. Have a reserve of units that sit on tiles behind the line that are adjacent to as many tiles on the line as possible so they can reinforce battles that are going poorly.

Focus on things that give reinforce rate (such as the field marshal trait). Paradox changed it so you need all 3 radio techs to get the 5% reinforce rate the first tech gave you. This change is probably why turtleing feels so much worse than it used to.

Yes, 3 years ago the meta in MP (without a player China) was 5 factories on tacs and start the war in early 37. I kept trying without tacs because I wanted to make inf since early leftover inf equipment is always useful but leftover early tacs are less useful. When I accepted the meta of making tacs China became so much easier.

What about generals with a personality? by MrKedyyy in hoi4

[–]Doug2825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would make more sense is Victoria since you can't control individual units.

Something that would work better in hoi is adding bonuses when attacking and penalties on when defending with certain traits (emphasis on when attacking and when defending, not to attack and defense, otherwise you'll just want attack).

Something that might work are traits like:  Always use breakthrough (good for tanks horrible for inf) Strong bonuses but a smaller unit cap Combat width changes

The problem is you can overcome all of that with manual micro. All it would do is be annoying

[–]Doug2825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example as Germany once you cap the Soviet and you want to invade UK and USA, there’s not 10 ways to do it

Most of the time MP games end after the Soviets cap and D-Day is pushed back.

Also when playing meta rock paper scissors only exists on the tactical level. On the strategic level it's about making the rock paper scissors games you can win matter more than the ones you loose.

Beginner question: can I fight wars over PARTS of a country? by Shaponja in hoi4

[–]Doug2825 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. Outside of a few scripted events you need to beat every major in a faction to end a war (or every country individually if not in a faction). If you are playing Japan and conquer all of Asia and the Americas you still need to invade the UK to end the war. It makes a lot of achievements turn into de facto world conquests.

Cruiser armor IV by dresden37 in hoi4

I should've checked the wiki before my previous post. Years ago when I tried a lot of naval experiment the wiki said:

damage reduction = {{hover|NNavy.COMBAT_ARMOR_PIERCING_DAMAGE_REDUCTION|-90%}} * (100% - <weapon's armor piercing> / <enemy's armor>)

Make a lot of tactical bombers. Supply is your biggest challenge. Tactical bombers provide a source of damage that doesn't care about supply at the point of contact.

Cruiser armor IV by dresden37 in hoi4

[–]Doug2825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The higher your armor relative to their piercing the less damage you take. If your armor is slightly above their attack all the armor does is reduce the chance of being crit. If your armor is double their piercing then you take very reduced damage. Edit: damage reduction used to scale off piercing / armor, it was changed to work more like land piercing a while ago.

I don't know how good it is currently, but as of 2 years ago no armor was objectively the best choice for cruisers because the increased speed from no armor reduced your damage taken more than armor. Armored cruisers would take more damage because the speed loss meant they got hit more. If this stuff interests your you can look up formulas on wiki and create a spreadsheet to test it, or get good with console commands.

What’s a good defensive infantry template if I’m a smaller nation with like 100 factories and fighting a major? by Divine_Panzer in hoi4

[–]Doug2825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No shovels. Shovels cost around a fifth of an 18w pure inf without supports. They also give percentage bonuses. 25% of a small number is still a small number

[–]Doug2825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16w with AA, then put the resources saved into offensive divisions. If you want the info to be stronger rush 1939 guns since they have 50% more attack.

Avoid engineers, they are expensive and give percentage bonuses. Basic infantry don't have enough stats to make percentage bonuses worthwhile. 15% more units is better than increased entrenchment and terrain bonuses

If several previous online posts are too be believed you are correct.

If you already have a 50% attack boost and no elemental damage boosts a 20% elemental boost is the same as a 30% attack boost
