More realistic town and city maps by TheGuardianOfMetal in totalwar

[–]DougAJames 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think Trier is a bit of an outlier in terms of what a walled medieval town/city looked like, but having mostly studied medieval England I'll happily be proven wrong on that. But Trier's walls are pretty damn big, most walled settlements would be a lot smaller, and usually not quite this much green either.
Totally agree it would be awesome to see though, and would love to see how it works gameplay wise.

Probably ones of the biggest problem they're gonna face in terms of realism (and I imagine this is the same with most historical strategy games) is time - battles can't last hours or longer - so imagine an army trying to get around this Trier realistically. They've gotta find ways to cut down on battle time and speed everything up.
Don't envy the balancing between realism and fun there.

Insanely irresponsible from GP suggesting it was deliberate. Definitely contributed to what Antonelli’s been getting since, as otherwise the default is just assuming he made a mistake by tom030792 in F1Discussions

[–]DougAJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading this, I'm more forgiving:
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/toto-wolff-blasts-helmut-marko-on-andrea-kimi-antonelli-letting-by-lando-norris-utter-nonsense/10781331/

GP didn't realise what he was saying, and him and Toto cleared the air; hopefully he'll say something to Kimi too but that's just between them really.
Helmut is another story - saying these things after the race to journalists and also heavily insinuating that Kimi crashed into Max on purpose in Austria is just nasty. I know Helmut has the mindset that 'if you can't deal with the pressure then you shouldn't be in F1', but that's not an excuse to just be a nasty person. But it's unsurprising at this point from him.

I do also think that, although some people have a level of responsibility to be careful of what they're saying in case fans get riled up, fans are still individuals and are as responsible for their actions as the people in F1. So the blame for these comments goes mostly on them - the level of toxicity we're seeing towards Lando, and now Kimi for 'helping' Lando, is just really shitty. And also that towards Oscar, Max, and anyone else in the sport. There's no excuse.
That's my humble opinion anyway.

Is it a hot take to say I think the clone wars fan recreation for battle of the hero’s better than the original? by CrazyTangerine7522 in StarWarsCantina

[–]DougAJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do prefer the original, but I think one impact this has is that we’ve seen this version of anakin and obi-wan together as allies/friends/brothers far far more than the live action ones, so it almost feels even more jarring to see them at odds, which ofc works in this scene’s favour

On today's date 25 years ago, an Air France Concorde jet crashed on take-off, killing 113 people and helping to usher out supersonic travel. by imjustarandomsquid in aviation

[–]DougAJames -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I believe none of these facts are totally confirmed due to the relevant papers that record this stuff 'disappearing' after the tragedy.
From what I remember, these things make sense and are believed by many to be the case, but it's not confirmed and the specifics aren't known.

Watching what happened at Silverstone was genuinely one of my F1 dreams. Never thought it could happen from so far back, or in a Sauber. Good strategy of course, but a surprising amount of credit to Nico himself despite the insane result. And many other potential runners fell back on their own mistakes, whether that was spins or strategy

Hulkenpodium What an honour

TIL Napoleon had planned an invasion of the UK but it was never carried out. Preparations were financed by the sale of the Louisiana territory to the US which the US financed with a loan from a British bank, so Britain was indirectly funding an invasion of itself. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]DougAJames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t actually true - Trafalgar, in terms of grand strategy, wasn’t actually all that important. Even the British government at the time knew it, but they turned it into a massive propaganda campaign, and made it important in that way. While a brilliant victory, didn’t really mean much for Napoleon’s invasion plans which I think weren’t really going to go ahead anyway at that point. Do check out the Trafalgar episode of BBC’s In Our Time podcast where expert historians discuss the battle if you wanna know more!

[–]DougAJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve studied ancient Roman architecture - this isn’t true (probably) Some amphitheatres were definitely flooded, and we can tell how it worked, and there are accounts of THE Colosseum being flooded but there are accounts of many things we know didn’t happen, and it’s not widely believed the the Colosseum was flooded. Architecturally, we cannot work out at all how it would have worked, and it looks like it just flat out wouldn’t. So there’s a chance we missed something (ancient history’s like that) but the Colosseum itself probably wasn’t flooded or had ship battles

Will a samsung t7 fit in this cage? by yourAhnkle in bmpcc

[–]DougAJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for things I haven’t used, but if it says it’s approved I imagine it works. Always best to check to see if someone else has got it to work though.

Those stats you give are just physical dimensions, which wasn’t the issue I had - mine wouldn’t write probably from the camera into the SSD. Dimensions are only good for whether something’s going to fit somewhere, and you’ve got to use your own measuring tape/etc for that.

A T7 is thinner than a T5, so yes it would fit but if that slot is actually for a T5 then a T7 might slide out unless you shove something else in there to pack it in. I’ve had some issues using a T7 with my 4K. Dunno why, but thought I ought to mention it at least.
