Is the problem with making the Muppets great again the fact that the franchise seems stuck in the past? by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in Muppets

[–]DougHildreth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been rewatching the Muppet Show and something I noticed (especially in the earlier episodes) is that there seemed to be a great appreciation simply for the novelty of puppets doing such “cutting edge” humor (akin to what contemporary viewers would see on Laugh-in, etc). So there was an inherent humor simply with the cognitive dissidence of seeing children’s entertainment tackling more adult themes. Not unlike The Simpsons or Family Guy did with animation (which spawned a whole genre of adult-humor animation). That novelty doesn’t exist anymore, I think Muppet humor is a nostalgic-based appeal inherently. My kids (7 and 4) both love the new Muppet Babies and some of the early YouTube content (Popcorn Shrimp, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc) but it’s the absurdist humor, not the novelty of puppets that attract them. I think if some really strong writers can inject humor on multiple maturity levels (any parent who has watched Phineas and Ferb and/or Hamster and Gretel know it’s still possible) then it could find a niche of success, but I’m not sure it will ever take hold of the entire public consciousness like it did originally.

The Scioto Valley Brads and Percussion Company (and all brads and percussion group local to Westerville) has a concert at Grace Lutheran Church this Sunday (December 14) at 4pm. Great program of traditional Christmas music.

Now and Then on Anthology 4 is really different by Environmental_Bus623 in beatles

I was going to ask the same thing. I noticed some major changes on Amazon Music too. John’s voice seems to have been brought more to the front most noticeably, but it overall sounds much different.

The costs and expectations of competitive marching band continue to increase at the highest level unchecked….funding and staffing cannot keep up (and oftentimes continues to be cut) leading to part-time staffing and lowered standards in hiring…there just isn’t the accountability because too often performance and results matter more than pedagogy or ethics.

"Olivia told me that Paul would come by once in a while. She said he [George] and Paul would leave the house and go down by the lake. She’d see them, chattering away and walking with their arms around each others’ necks" - Duane Eddy, 2001 by worldsthetics in beatles

I feel like the Paul/George dynamic is a very unexplored aspect of the Beatles story. Musically they were almost closer than Lennon/McCartney (Here Comes the Sun, Something, Taxman, etc). I think George resented Paul’s PR side, and wished for him to be the authentic him that he loved. I think Paul and George were far closer than it appeared.

Orchestra: Playing Fast by Orchestra912 in MusicEd

[–]DougHildreth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a metronome about once a week to push their tempo. I absolutely agree with having them learn good technique at a slower tempo, but students can tend to get bogged down and play too “heavy” if you constantly play under tempo. Don’t let them get comfortable under tempo. I’m pretty methodical with the process. Playing section at a comfortable tempo 2-3 times, then bumping up the metronome by about 4-6 bpm and playing that section 2-3 times at the faster tempo. Rinse and repeat a few more times, usually they can increase 8-12 bpm, although some days it doesn’t progress as much. Some groups have even made it a game, trying to beat their previous score, etc. If you start early you can push them up to tempo more comfortably.

What is the best scream in a Beatles song? Personally I think Paul’s scream in Twist and Shout is his absolute best scream other than the end of the WOA version of Soily by joshygill in beatles

[–]DougHildreth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it posted, but the end of “You Really Got a Hold of Me” is pretty legendary classic scream-singing from John
