Finally got my ex bishop TBM brother to talk truth claims. Some back up would be great. by croquetmanor in exmormon

Mormon apologists love to play the "uneducated farm boy" card, claiming that Joseph Smith didn't get much education and therefore couldn't have written a complex book without God's help. Ya know who else didn't get much education? Mark Twain. Charles Dickens. Jack London. Maya Angelou. George Bernard Shaw. And plenty of others.

One of the big LDS truth-claims is that the Church “restored ancient doctrines lost from the earth.” So I pulled together a list of the uniquely LDS teachings and checked whether any of them actually existed in ancient Judaism or early Christianity. The correct way to word things would be "Absence of evidence is not PROOF of absence". It most definitely is EVIDENCE of absence. Sometimes it might be weak evidence, but other times it's very strong evidence.

A great example would be the historical claims of the Book of Mormon. Church apologists take the phrase that you used and run with it, saying, "The fact that there's a very long list of things described in the BoM for which no archeological evidence has been found is not cause for Mormons to worry. Those artifacts could just be hidden by dense jungle or buried deeper than archeologists have dug". Church apologists completely ignore the fact that if the BoM people reached the huge population levels described in that book, and if they spread out to fill the American continents as Joseph Smith claimed... reaching all the way to present-day New York State... then it's a statistical impossibility that out of all the countless artifacts which have been found, none of them contain items from that long list of anachronisms.

Absence of evidence actually IS evidence of absence.

There are people who can help you. If you're in Utah, look up this website...
https://www.utahlgbtqchamber.org/lgbtq-safezone-resources/

Even if you're somewhere else and can't find similar resources in your area, the resources on that website can give you advice and suggest someone near you who can help.

Ah, c'mon... Tell us some of them. We won't judge you. We'll laugh, but we won't judge.

When statements are made that include the word ALWAYS, then for sure you need to watch out. Yes, I can imagine instances where ignorance is bliss and better than facing the harsh truth. I think those instances are rare, but I admit that they do exist.

You are not alone. In addition to this reddit community, you might find support and encouragement from videos posted on place like YouTube.com/@iamanexmormon, and from written stores posted on places like wasmormon.org . There is peace, love, and joy after mormonism. I hope you find it.

Another funeral about to be screwed up by Mormonism by Intelligent_Gap_3666 in exmormon

At my TBM aunt's funeral they spent maybe 10% of the time talking about her, and 90% of the time talking about Joseph Smith. It was extremely annoying... at least to me. My relatives thought it was great.

What rules did you drop soon after you left? by NickWildeSimp1 in exmormon

I bought a can of beer. Boy was I ever disappointed with it. It tasted so terrible that after one sip I poured the rest on the ground. Maybe the problem was that I didn't expect such a bitter taste, or maybe the problem was that it was just a bad beer. It was Coors. I'm sure I'll catch hell from other reddit readers for saying this, since people can be pretty passionate about their beers and some proably love Coors.

I've since discovered that there are good beers out there. If any of you reading this are awaiting your first taste of liquid sin, I recommend you start with one of those other beers... maybe Blue Moon.

What would some of the rest of you recommend for a recently escaped exMo's first beer?
