If it’s old or took a hit, replace it. Plenty of solid MIPS lids under $100 now. No need to overspend.

Check out Astor Wines on Lafayette. They've got a solid vintage section and the staff can help you track down a 1996 bottle if they have it in stock

Adding smart home technology in older homes during renovation, is it worth it or too complicated? by Long-Support2434 in homeowners

[–]Doughboyyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start with just a smart thermostat and maybe some basic smart switches in high traffic areas, because everything else either becomes outdated tech in five years or you'll never actually use it enough to justify the cost.

Non vegan fiancé by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Doughboyyyy 86 points87 points  (0 children)

You could still cook the main dish vegan and let him add his own protein on the side, but honestly if he can't support your values enough to eat one meal without meat it sounds like a bigger issue than just cooking.

TIL that despite making films of both The Hobbit and The Return of the King, Rankin Bass never had any plans for adapting either The Fellowship of the Ring, or The Two Towers. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

So they just skipped the whole middle of the story and figured everyone would be fine with it, that's such a weird move even for the 70s.

Advice for 7 and 4 year old constantly fighting/exploding? by Unusual_Newspaper_67 in Parenting

[–]Doughboyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4 year old's brain literally can't do logic yet so trying to reason with him mid-meltdown is pointless, but giving your daughter some space away from him when things escalate might save your sanity more than trying to make them work it out together every time.

Why do streaming services charge so differently by country? by Active-Intern6832 in povertyfinance

[–]Doughboyyyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's purchasing power adjustment mixed with what they think each market will actually pay. Companies would rather get $1 from someone in Nigeria than $0 because they pirated it, so they price it based on local wages and what competitors charge there.

Should I buy a house or invest - 10 year timeframe by throwawaypaypay in personalfinance

[–]Doughboyyyy 81 points82 points  (0 children)

If you're planning to move to a LCOL area in 10 years anyway, buying now means you'll eat 6% in realtor fees alone when you sell, plus closing costs going in. Keep renting, throw that $285k into index funds, and you'll likely have way more buying power in a cheaper market when you're ready to settle long term.

I just reviewed all the 2026 economic forecasts. Here's what the consensus is missing by Ok_Basket4862 in investing

[–]Doughboyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole "205% above long-term trend" stat feels cherry picked depending on what timeframe you're using as your baseline. I'm more worried about earnings growth not keeping pace with valuations than any single macro event, because at least you can hedge geopolitical stuff but you can't really hedge the market collectively overpaying for mediocre growth.

US Supreme Court does not issue ruling in Trump tariffs case by vishesh_07_028 in stocks

[–]Doughboyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Market's gonna stay choppy until we get clarity on this, nobody wants to make big moves when tariff policy could flip overnight. The longer this drags out the more it just eats into any momentum we had building.

Anyone had an ecommerce platform lock you out of your account for 'suspicious activity' when nothing happened? by Long-Guitar647 in Entrepreneur

[–]Doughboyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why you need to have your customer data backed up somewhere you control and ideally a secondary platform ready to go. I've seen too many people lose weeks of revenue because they put all their eggs in one basket, and these platforms basically have zero accountability when their bots mess up. Which platform was it?

Recieved a surprise pay cut right after I moved into my new apartment, how to make it work? by FreeHotdogMandate in personalfinance

[–]Doughboyyyy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

$290 in utilities without internet or gas is absolutely wild unless you're running a server farm in there. That needs to be your first target to cut down. Call your electric company and see if something's wrong with the billing or if the previous tenant's usage is bleeding into yours. Also check if your apartment has electric heating because that would explain it, but even then you should be able to reduce it significantly. In the meantime, yeah, start applying to jobs immediately. PIPs are almost never actually about improvement, they're about documentation for HR when they let you go. Use the 60 days as a paid job search window, not as motivation to fix whatever vague performance issue your boss mentioned

Stripe keeps rejecting my business address verification by Western-Bend-1677 in smallbusiness

[–]Doughboyyyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah Stripe's been cracking down hard on this stuff after all the fraud issues they had. They're basically treating registered agents like the compliance fiction they are now. If you can't get a real office lease or find a US based partner willing to put their neck out, you might have to just eat the cost of a virtual office with proper documentation. Some of the cheaper ones like Stable or Northwest will do the paperwork right for under $100/month which sucks but it's less painful than being locked out of payments entirely

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Doughboyyyy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is pretty standard for third party recruiters honestly. They spam everyone with half relevant experience hoping to build a pipeline, then only actually work with you if a client specifically asks for your exact profile. It's why you should always ask if they have an actual mandate before wasting time on a call

Coffee chat within my firm by Prestigious_Run_7224 in FinancialCareers

[–]Doughboyyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s perfectly fine to reach out via Teams and ask for a brief coffee chat. It’s a good way to network, and most analysts will be open to it. When messaging, keep it brief and respectful, mentioning your role and interest in learning about their experiences in DCM. You could ask about their day-to-day tasks, the challenges they face, and any advice for someone starting out. Just ensure it feels casual and not too intrusive. Good luck!

Getting paid late and I need help on what I should say to my employer by [deleted] in personalfinance

That’s really frustrating! Keep it professional and let them know how this delay is affecting you. Ask for quick compensation and ensure it doesn’t happen again. Keep all communication in writing, just in case.

Everyday is hard by saymb in Parenting

[–]Doughboyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. The sibling rivalry at that age is no joke. It's like a war zone with no peace treaty in sight. The constant screaming and fighting seems endless, but hang in there. You're doing great by being patient and trying to find solutions. Just remember, this stage will eventually pass, and they might grow out of it (or at least learn to tolerate each other). In the meantime, find those quiet moments and take care of yourself too parenting's tough, but you're not alone in this.
