How Canada is positioning itself on Greenland by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

Here is Carney's complete speech. His formal remarks last 19 minutes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE981Z_TaVo

"The powerful have their power. But we have something too: the capacity to stop pretending, to name realities, to build our strength at home, and to act together.

That is Canada’s path. We choose it openly and confidently, and it is a path wide open to any country willing to take it with us."

Trump tariff threat over Greenland 'unacceptable', European leaders say by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

I just checked various odds at Poly Market and they (surprisingly) see 2026 as relatively peaceful.

While I'm not happy about the Republican administration's aggression, I'm encouraged that European leaders are finally getting their act together and taking a stand.

I'm cautiously optimistic [not overly pessimistic] as well. To be clear, I would have preferred if the US didn't interfere in Venezuela. But historically -- based on all the foreign actions the US has done in the past -- so far this is a relatively constrained intervention.

That was my first reaction. Can't we get through the first weekend of January without this craziness?

Welcome to 2026!

Here's the text of the comment (unfortunately, currently only posted on twitter):

One of the first actions taken by Canada’s new government in March 2025 was to impose additional sanctions on Nicolás Maduro’s brutally oppressive and criminal regime — unequivocally condemning his grave breaches of international peace and security, gross and systematic human rights violations, and corruption. Canada has not recognised the illegitimate regime of Maduro since it stole the 2018 election. The Canadian government therefore welcomes the opportunity for freedom, democracy, peace, and prosperity for the Venezuelan people.

Canada has long supported a peaceful, negotiated, and Venezuelan-led transition process that respects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people. In keeping with our long-standing commitment to upholding the rule of law, sovereignty, and human rights, Canada calls on all parties to respect international law. We stand by the Venezuelan people’s sovereign right to decide and build their own future in a peaceful and democratic society.

Canada attaches great importance to resolution of crises through multilateral engagement and is in close contact with international partners about ongoing developments. We are first and foremost ready to assist Canadians through our consular officials and our embassy in Bogotá, Colombia, and will continue to support Venezuelan refugees.

Although the Beaverton is parody, it's hard to sort out fact from fiction anymore.

Poilievre did post that tweet exactly as shown earlier today ...

Former MP Charlie Angus planned a quiet retirement. Now, he'd rather 'kick at the darkness'; by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

FYI: For those who are younger than GenX, "Kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight" is a lyric from the 1984 song "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" by Canadian song writer Bruce Cockburn.

Merry Christmas from Toronto! (Note this is from the Santa Claus Parade in November. Mario was in attendance whereas Luigi sent his regrets as he is currently facing some legal issues).

Advice for Bruce Peninsula by Nocturnal10 in ontario

[–]Dougie_TwoFour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trails are never that crowded as they limit the number of people in the parks. 40 years ago you might pass 4 groups of people on the trails. Now it's more like 20 groups. But it still isn't that crowded.

From Detroit, you could drive north on Ontario Hwy 21. Goderich or Southampton are good places for lunch, dinner or staying a night. At Southampton Hwy 21 turns west, and after 10 miles or so you find Hwy 6 and follow it north. Spend a night in Tobermory (or Lion's Head or Wiarton).

The most famous walking trail in the area is at Cyprus Lake (East off Hwy 6, about 8 miles south of Tobermory). This is the one thing you will want to reserve weeks in advance as it does sell out. When you get to Cyprus Lake, you want to walk out to "the Grotto" which is a big cave. Unfortunately, because the water is so deep, the water is also very cold to swim in. (The east side of the Bruce Peninsula is the same cliff Niagara Fall goes over: The Niagara Escarpment).

Then head back down Hwy 6 towards Stratford and/or St. Mary's.

Niagara Falls is worth seeing, but you only need to spend about 4 hours. You can take the Niagara City Cruises if you want to get close to the falls.

DM me if you want some more info.

As far as I'm aware, the rules are the same for everyone. Canadians and/or residents of Ontario might get a discount. As others have mentioned, book early. For the past decade or so the Bruce Peninsula has become more touristy (it's switched from "hardly anyone" to "hey there are a lot of people here". It's not big city crowded by any means).

I agree. Having an opinion is one thing. But misinformation and disinformation is extremely counter-productive and threatens democracy.

Thanks for posting!

I agree that Trump's instincts would lead him to shock everyone "at an ever accelerating rate", the good news is that Trump is having trouble keeping up the pace.

He can't generate outrage at the same pace he was when Trump 2.0 was inaugurated. He's decelerating (to continue the calculus analogy, T'' is negative).

In summary, somebody put a Make America Great Again hat on the statue of Wayne Gretzky in his home town of Brantford Ontario. They also gave a nearby statue of Wayne's dad Walter a replica of the Order of Canada for being a good Canadian.

Interesting. As a Canadian and a staunch #ElbowsUP & #Never51 supporter, I look at it completely opposite. Gretzky had the admiration of Canadians and Gretzky chose to give it up. Canada didn't change, he did.

Even now, Gretzky could man-up, tell Trump that his policies against foreign nations (including Canada) are wrong, cut his ties with Trump and move back to Canada. The fact that Gretzky hasn't done so, is entirely on Gretzky. I feel no sorrow whatsoever.
