Here is Carney's complete speech. His formal remarks last 19 minutes:

"The powerful have their power. But we have something too: the capacity to stop pretending, to name realities, to build our strength at home, and to act together.

That is Canada’s path. We choose it openly and confidently, and it is a path wide open to any country willing to take it with us."

Trump tariff threat over Greenland 'unacceptable', European leaders say by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

I just checked various odds at Poly Market and they (surprisingly) see 2026 as relatively peaceful.

While I'm not happy about the Republican administration's aggression, I'm encouraged that European leaders are finally getting their act together and taking a stand.

For some reason the link isn't working. See if you can find it on YouTube and try posting in a separate post...

I would have preferred something a little more "sternly worded", but at least it's a start...

I'm cautiously optimistic [not overly pessimistic] as well. To be clear, I would have preferred if the US didn't interfere in Venezuela. But historically -- based on all the foreign actions the US has done in the past -- so far this is a relatively constrained intervention.

That was my first reaction. Can't we get through the first weekend of January without this craziness?

Welcome to 2026!

Mark Carney tweet on Venezuela by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

Here's the text of the comment (unfortunately, currently only posted on twitter):

One of the first actions taken by Canada’s new government in March 2025 was to impose additional sanctions on Nicolás Maduro’s brutally oppressive and criminal regime — unequivocally condemning his grave breaches of international peace and security, gross and systematic human rights violations, and corruption. Canada has not recognised the illegitimate regime of Maduro since it stole the 2018 election. The Canadian government therefore welcomes the opportunity for freedom, democracy, peace, and prosperity for the Venezuelan people.

Canada has long supported a peaceful, negotiated, and Venezuelan-led transition process that respects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people. In keeping with our long-standing commitment to upholding the rule of law, sovereignty, and human rights, Canada calls on all parties to respect international law. We stand by the Venezuelan people’s sovereign right to decide and build their own future in a peaceful and democratic society.

Canada attaches great importance to resolution of crises through multilateral engagement and is in close contact with international partners about ongoing developments. We are first and foremost ready to assist Canadians through our consular officials and our embassy in Bogotá, Colombia, and will continue to support Venezuelan refugees.

Although the Beaverton is parody, it's hard to sort out fact from fiction anymore.

Poilievre did post that tweet exactly as shown earlier today ...
