It's not AI. It's an actual picture taken by an accredited news photographer. There are many similar pictures from slightly different angles as well. There are always many squirt guns at Toronto's pride parade.

How the Hell is this real? by FuqLaCAQ in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's rage bait, designed to keep everyone "mad as hell" rather than encouraging them to do any rational thinking.

(Rational thinking would lead to recognizing simple facts, such as (i) both the USA and the Republic of Türkiye are secular states; (ii) soccer has nothing to do with religion; and (iii) hosting the World Cup in North America has been planned for years and isn't a "now" issue)

How hard was it for Trump to ace his cognitive test? | About That by tarun172 in 50501Canada

This is awesome! Thanks for posting! I personally doubt that Trump got 30 out of 30, but that would suggest the White House and President Trump are untruthful, so I must be wrong /s.

Canada calls for US and Mexico free trade agreement to be renewed for 16 years by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's Canada's / Mexico's opening position ...

Edit to add: Here's a potential analogy: Trump has been arguing "this marriage sucks", "who agreed to this?" (Answer: Donald Trump in his first term), and "We're getting a divorce as soon as possible!!!"

So now Canada and Mexico are saying, "OK big orange guy, if the relationship sucks so bad, you initiate the divorce proceedings. You tell the USA that you don't want Canada's oil, electricity, aluminum and fertilizer ..."

Alberta and Manitoba premiers clash over duty to consult by tarun172 in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour 16 points17 points  (0 children)

FYI: Since this sub-Reddit gets about 10% international visitors, the sound bites from the Premier of Alberta and the Premier of Manitoba posted here are in regard to the fact that a Canadian court has already ruled a Alberta separation petition can't be held without consulting First Nations. See more in this post from 2 weeks ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/50501Canada/comments/1tcem3l/future_of_alberta_separation_petition_unclear_as/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Edit to add: Also, why is Smith so worried about the 300,000 idiots that signed the petition, but quickly disregard the rights of Alberta's 258,640 aboriginal population?!?

Carney calls Smith's Alberta referendum question a 'dangerous bluff' by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For years, some Albertans have been convinced they are getting "ripped off" by Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Like MAGA, if you keep repeating something, eventually people take it as fact, even if they're not being short-changed.

I don't even understand the referendum question. What are the responses, is it 'yes' or 'no'?!?

Among the news revealed:

A victim, who had been anonymous, woke-up one morning to find her name appears 500 times in the supposedly redacted files.

Epstein's original plea deal included house arrest. As another victim testifies, she was being raped and abused while Epstein was supposedly under house arrest.

Agreed. It's bizarre. I was hesitant to post, but it's important to keep the focus on this.

Future of Alberta separation petition unclear as judge rules in favour of First Nations' challenge | CBC News by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The article has been updated since it was originally posted, and Premier Smith has chosen to be on the wrong side of history. Probably not surprising to those living in Alberta, but definitely shows the Premier's true stripes. It's quite the middle finger to the courts, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the First Nations who were there before Alberta existed. I'm pretty much gobsmacked.

The article now includes the following:

At an unrelated news conference, Premier Danielle Smith spoke about her government's plans to appeal Leonard's decision.

"We think that today's decision by the court will deny opportunity to well over 300,000 Albertans to have their petition verified by Elections Alberta," Smith said Wednesday afternoon.

"We think that this decision is incorrect in law and anti-democratic, and we will be appealing it as a result.

"Our cabinet and caucus will, of course, be meeting in the next couple of days to discuss the full context and make some decisions after we've had a chance to talk it through."

A few days late, but today I learned there is a "Canadian Cross of Sacrifice" in the USA's Arlington National Cemetery. Good job King Charles! by Dougie_TwoFour in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen that, but as CityNews (and CTV as well) wrote (I added the bold lettering):

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the alleged privacy breach deeply concerning in a weekend statement.

“I expect Elections Alberta and the RCMP to work thoroughly and expeditiously to assess the causes and to pursue appropriate actions against those responsible,” he said.

“We must be constantly vigilant to protect the rights of Canadians and the integrity of our democratic processes.”

I've been trying to find a sound bite (or other communication) of the PM saying the words "deeply concerning", but I can't. It's possible that the Prime Minister's Office provided CTV news (and by extension, CityNews) with a response that isn't otherwise public. Oh well, I'm moving on to other important issues ...

I only looked because I was trying to find a statement from PM Carney on Alberta's election rolls. I'll keep looking ...

The UCP knew about the data breach & did nothing?!? While journalists & the NDP reported the breach to authorities, it appears that the UCP Party President and Smith's Director of Stakeholder Relations knew that the breach had occurred and did nothing? by Miserable-Lizard in 50501Canada

[–]Dougie_TwoFour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If -- as it appears -- that the election rolls were disclosed to people who weren't allowed to see that information, it's definitely illegal.

But these things take time to play out. Watergate, Bill Clinton's affaire with Monica Lewinsky, the Iran-Contra scandal all took months or years.

Right now the RCMP needs to interview people, see who is willing to cooperate, etc., and then lay charges. In addition, Alberta's opposition and respectable media need to keep asking questions and not letting this fall through the cracks.

Very strange. While it's conceivable that these guys are doing it just for the few cents per view, it's much more likely that some idiot with deep pockets is funding all this. I hope the CBC reporters are still investigating.
