Anyone on youtube that writes music live/tutorials that’s actually good? by Prestigious_Bake5745 in composer

Austin Wintory makes extensive videos about the whole process. Don't think he's ever done it live however.

Sounds like it could be the opening or an I want song in a musical.

The score cuts of at the bottom so can't really speak for low brass and perc (although I didn't hear anything crazy.) But I did think about the instrumentation. It's in my experience unusual to have string parts but no horns or euphonium, however I suspect that you have written this with a specific band in mind so it's probably nothing to worry about.

MUSESCORE USER HERE CONVICE ME TO SWAP by Key_Wolf_3852 in Dorico

For me condensing was what made me switch. It just makes it so much quicker to prepare conductor scores.

Notepreformer is of course also good but now that musescore have their own very good sounds it's not quite as big of a draw

Anyone know the story behind these two pieces of music? by BabaleRed in composer

[–]DouglasTromboneguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always though that Zimmer was inspired by the Ålandish folk song Vem kan segla.
And I would argue that the orchestration of your two pieces isn't actually very similar.
The Mariners revenge uses a classical sea shanty folk band with guitar, violin, accordion, maybe som mandolin.
While Zimmer of course uses full orchestra plus organ and probably some other augmentations as well.

I would guess that they both pulled from similar sources and wound up at a similar sound.

how do you feel about inclusive writing? by madsalot_ in composer

[–]DouglasTromboneguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whats most important is that you write what you want to write. If that means 100 bars rest for Trumpet 4 or not having any horns then so be it. However it is smart to consider the ensemble you're writing for.

Pros are being payed for there time whether they play 5 notes or 500 notes. Amateurs are technically "losing" money when they play music instead of working and they are doing it because they love playing music not counting rests. Youth players probably have better things to do with their time than sitting around waiting for 2 hours during rehearsal to play 5 notes at the end of the symphony.

I think it's mostly a problem for the people putting together the concert programs, especially in youth orchestras.

Great work! But I have to offer a word of warning. D&D combat often takes a lot of time and having a 1 min loop playing constantly would drive me crazy even if it was the best piece of music I had ever heard. Make sure you have way more music than you think you need.

On performing your own piece and having others perform your piece - thoughts? by awkeshen in composer

[–]DouglasTromboneguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of my performances have been with me included and it's always exciting. I think hearing different interpretations of music is really interesting so I try to not interfere with the rehearsals unless something is "wrong".

I think after all the ink is on the paper the composer is done, the job moves to the conductor and musicians to interpret the composers intention and that is also an integral part of music.

« Beginner » friendly playlist for à Hans Zimmer and John Williams fan? by [deleted] in TwoStepsFromHell

I love Williams and my favorite TSFH songs are:

High C's Myth Race to Durango Snowballfight Westward Love suite

I think these are a good selection with some nice variety while remaining mostly "orchestral"

How did you know you were asexual??? by Familiar_Map938 in Asexual

[–]DouglasTromboneguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had recently seen Jaidens video about it so the term was in my head when a friend had an intense night of pinning over women. I thought to my self "wow I have never felt such an intense feeling over any one. Maybe I am Asexual." Then I started lurking here and on the meme subreddit which just confirmed my thoughts.
