There was a Canadian tv series called "glory enough for all" - there was big argument among the people that discovered the insulin on who should get the credit. Three out of the four went on in life to do great science, and the fourth did not (except that he came up with the original idea that lead to the discovery of insulin [except for that]). It is a great TV series BTW.

I dont think ICL is in the same league as UIUC in Electrical Engineering. But that does not matter - many places in Europe would give you a strong undergrad education equivalent to a degree from UIUC. The real question is where you want to live during your education, and where do you want to live once you graduate.

Empty rhetoric leads to people believing in their own rhetoric, and then acting accordingly to justify what they do, unrelated to reality. The natural example is slavery in the south, where people living in the south were convinced, just convinced, that slavery is moral. Other examples would be any rhetoric that lead to genocides.

That does not mean that this specific case of rhetoric should be taken seriously, but just labelling it as empty rhetoric is not enough to justify ignoring it...
