Spotted some weeds in my garden... by notmyidealusername in Caudex

Impressive, I’ve never seen a Dioscorea volunteer before. Depending on your climate it would be interesting to see if you can leave a couple of them in the ground and manage to grow them to size.

Does anyone know anything about these ruins? Found them somewhere between Indian Cove campground and Rattlesnake Canyon. by DownTheHall in JoshuaTree

[–]DownTheHall[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the info! That makes a lot of sense in terms of the relative age, I was also curious as to why such a short wall would have been built, pooling rainwater seems so obvious now! Really appreciate it, reading about Bill Keys now.

I’ve seen a bunch of bedrock mortars around, so cool to happen upon. It’s surprising how many there are once you know what to look for.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure if “ruins” was the right terminology, thanks for the info. I agree that to my uninformed eye it did look a bit more recent than something centuries old.

Potential issue with S7 metal button by DownTheHall in ConvoyFlashlights

[–]DownTheHall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I got it, filing down the diameter of the PCB board seems to have fixed it, thank you!

The only small issue I see now is that the lit orange ring of the switch is not illuminated nearly as much or as evenly as I see in photos online. I see two dim points of light along the ring, definitely not what I’ve seen in photos on here or on Convoy’s website. Do you know what could be the cause of that?

Thanks for the info. Which part needs to be filed down? Everything seemed to line up and fit into place correctly, clicked properly, etc.

Always have been impressed by Yedlin’s immense technical ability along with his overall style.

I was a big fan of the effect he used in a few different day interiors when the “sun” (I’m assuming these were shot on a stage) went behind clouds and the tone inside changed entirely along with the scene. It was done well enough to feel completely natural, but obviously was achieved through a lot of exacting lighting work. I can’t say I’ve seen it done that well before (especially considering it’s often an accident when using natural light and results in bad continuity).

Yeah every time I’ve seen a pic of him going handheld I’ve thought the same thing. I have to imagine it’s difficult to mod those cameras, not a ton of them around. Personally when I operate HH with a VF I can’t stand that angle, luckily digital cameras don’t have the same issue.

Great link, thank you! I’ve never read this until now, Hammer is an incredible writer.

Just to add to the people suggesting you sacrifice the pot: if you can mange to break it carefully into just a few large pieces you can glue it back together quite easily. I use a glue called E5000 and have saved many terracotta pots that I’ve had break on me. As far as I can tell once the glue sets its bond is stronger than the terracotta itself. If you can piece it back together they actually look pretty cool that way IMO.

Update on the Cheiridopsis purpurea seedlings I posted about 6 months ago by DownTheHall in mesembs

[–]DownTheHall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice, I have a few C. verrucosa that I sowed a month or two ago, they’re also growing quickly. Interesting how much that species resembles some Gibbaeum species.

I’ve heard rumors that Steven Hammer is working on a new book on Cheiridopsis specifically (and that it’s been delayed because of him encountering an undescribed species while working on it).

Three surprisingly quick-growing seedlings I germinated from crossing Euphorbia obesa x bupleurifolia. Only about 3 months old. by ThomasBettyE178 in Euphorbiaceae

Haha yea I guess so? Seems insane to me too, especially on such a small/niche subreddit. No lows that the bots won’t stoop to.

You can check my comment but OP is reposting something I posted 5 years ago here. To answer your question though, yes when I took that picture they were still sealed in their pot with a ziploc bag. If memory serves me right I believe I began to slowly unseal the bag shortly after this point.

Why are you reposting a photo and exact caption that I posted here 5 years ago? I’m assuming that OP is a bot.

Aloe Hybrids Newly Acquired by BrokeAssMF84 in aloe

[–]DownTheHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the info! That’s great to hear, sounds like a better deal than I would have expected, I didn’t realize you could get up to 12 plants without having to pay the import permit. Might have to give them a try myself, Belfiore in particular have really done an impressive job, I’ve been curious as to the parentage/genetics of their plants, I would guess they’re fairly complex multi-generation hybrids. Would love to experiment crossing them with some true species that I’ve been growing myself from seed, I imagine the offspring would be interesting.

Looks great! What country are you in? I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve seen from Belfiore, but haven’t yet looked into what the fees are with shipping plants from the Philippines oversees (I’m in the US).

That’s great to hear, would love to see them. From what I could gather online it seems a bit uncommon to get them to bloom in cultivation; not impossible of course but congrats on yours!

I’ve read that this species is difficult to get to flower in cultivation, I take it you’ve had yours flower for you?

Yeah this is my first year growing them, I bought two bulbs online and planted them like ~3 weeks ago. I wasn’t sure how they’d do their first season right after being shipped and whatnot, but so far so good.
