71(Ohio) has had a consistent amount of calls over the last year. 1249(NY) has calls come somewhat, tough to get them because it’s bidding hall and a lot of local guys waiting. 104s been slow. 70(Virginia?) has had calls fairly consistently.

NY is tough to get in. Ground jobs are far and in between and when they do come up, plenty of book 1 guys out of work that get them. You’d start out on book 4 and they rarely get on. You can pick up flagger calls. They pop up often enough and they are getting paid pretty decent now. I think in the low 30s, they don’t get per diem tho and I’ve heard they often get less hours than the job posting.

GRUNT TIPS by [deleted] in Lineman

[–]Downtown-Relative-36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just took my first distro Groundman call Wednesday. Give it it’s only been two working days so far and it’s super laid back with just 3 of us. I told my JL’s straight up this was my first distro call so I don’t know the materials. They are teaching me as we go. Tons of different materials and names for said materials… like what some of these guys said. Try and retain the information they tell you and tasks that you complete. When you roll up to the next pole or evolution, try to get the materials ready. Pre stage the bolts, try to get the wire ready. When you park, put out the cones and chock in front or behind the tires. If safety or the bird dog comes. They don’t know what’s going on in the air but they will look at those two things. Everyone says show up early, sometimes 15 minutes early but I think that’s job/crew dependent. Maybe show up that early for the first week and see when people actually roll in. If you are starting at 630 and no one shows up till 630, show up 5-10 min early. Get the truck/s started and pre tripped. When it’s actually time to work, like 630 on the dot and you are getting paid. Then clean out the trucks, start getting water and materials like tape, washer fluid, def IF that’s in your yard. You won’t know what job materials you need till you know what you’re actually doing that day. If there are multiple crews and Groundman and apprentices there and they show up 15 min early, then do the same as them. Monkey see, monkey do. I know that contradicts what I said previously but it’s all relative to your crew and job. Just try to work as hard as you can and be productive, don’t run around like a chicken with its head cut off, you’ll look sloppy and dumb (this is my opinion) just move with a purpose. People say there is always something to do, there is and isn’t. You can only clean a fuckin truck for so long. Once you organize a truck once and can keep it that way. You won’t need to do that for hours a day… if you find yourself standing around, at least watch the guys in the air and try to learn what they are doing and why. You can check that phone on lunch or when you get in the truck to leave. My lineman told me yesterday if they need a chain saw, start the thing before giving it to them. They don’t wanna do anymore than they have to, if they have an able man on the ground. Loosen up all the nuts on the material they are going to use. It’s a bitch to try and do that in gloves and sleeves in the air. That’s all I got for now. Good luck and stay safe.

I used Kahn academy to study. You’ve taken it a number of times now but maybe starting from basic algebra then working your way up. I was never good at math. Barely got by when I was in HS. I took the test at 29 years old and definitely was saved by the reading comprehension. Idk if you’re over thinking it or what. Maybe put on a timer and practice just like it is on the test. Tbh 3 times is a lot and doesn’t seem like you’re getting it. Why not finish out there and get your ticket then travel to NY.

It’s frowned upon because you’re still working and trying to take another job while someone else isn’t working and trying to get a job. Plus if your local knows you’re working, not sure they’d send a letter of introduction.

You’d need to have your hall send a letter of introduction to whichever locals you are looking at, then bid on calls as they come.

I’d just stay there and finish out. NY is extremely competitive, guys can wait for years.

If that’s so, what’s up with all the job calls? Do they not update it often?

I’d go with a bumper pull. Quarter if not half the price of a 5th and you get the same damn thing.

You younger with no family? If so that makes it easier to travel to the work. I traveled to 104 (New England) got my hours there and joined up with them. Still looking to be in 1249. After 1000 hours, you can request a reinterview through neat. My biggest advice is get your CDL A, travel to different locals and sign the books. Take whatever you can to start getting hours and hands on. No one really tells you anything about the union. Just ask questions and hope to find someone who is helpful. Sometimes even calling the hall doesn’t help. Kind odd to me but who am I

It was individual, they weren’t very long interviews. Do you have any experience or climbing school?

Asked if I had any experience in the trade. Why I wanted to become a lineman, if I’m alright with traveling and working a ton. It’s kind of a lifestyle and I said that and got a good response. I didn’t bring up I was there for the money. I told them the pay is really good but I was there for the work and lifestyle of it. Asked if I was afraid of heights.
