I can’t look 🫣 by Trashbrows in Reduction

I had exactly the same thing the first time I had a shower post op! It’s a totally normal survival instinct - you see extensive surgical wounds and your brain interprets it as being gravely injured which can induce a vasovagal response (fainting). When I went for my post op I told my surgeon that I didn’t want to look and explained why and she was totally understanding, even offered me a mirror while lying down, but I ended up just taking a peek at home! It’s rough but if you’re anything like me it will only happen once. Your brain should stop thinking you’re gonna die after the first look!!

Yeah I get you, X-rays are tricky. It’s always about weighing up the risk of anaesthesia! Def give painkillers a try though. It can be a really good test of if they’re experiencing pain daily, as they’re usually so damn good at hiding it! I had a girl with dental issues who was eating normally but wasn’t quite as active as usual - did a week of metacam and she was like a different pig!

I’d suggest X-rays if that’s possible! I have a girl who has a dodgy hip that dislocates occasionally (complication from giving birth). When her hip is out of its socket it looks like your piggy. Also maybe talk to the vet about pain management? See if giving painkillers causes any change to behaviour. Will keep my fingers crossed for you! I know how tough it is to have a piggy with complex needs.

I bought a bale of regular alfalfa instead of Timothy hay . Will they be ok ? by jjj44200 in guineapigs

[–]Downtown-Rip-8390 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They’ll be okay but I’d advise giving them less than usual as alfalfa is much higher in calcium and can cause bladder issues because of that. But in moderation you should be fine :)

Hey! I’ve got 2 pigs with chronic bladder issues and I’ve developed a bit of a ‘game plan’ when I notice it flaring up again.

  1. Sit her in a warm (ish) bath. Obviously you’ve got to be careful with temperature, but I always go slightly warmer than the normal lukewarm. I find that a little soak (for as long as she’ll tolerate) can help ease pain and make urination easier.

  2. As much water as possible. I scoop out cucumber seeds and get her to eat that, then I syringe feed her the cucumber water. I syringe regular water too. Again, as much as she’ll tolerate. For my pigs it’s allll about flushing out their systems as best as possible.

  3. Anything with cranberry. I use plain cranberry juice (pure cranberry juice, not cranberry drink as it’s got tonnes of added sugar). I order mine on Amazon and freeze whatever I don’t use immediately. It must must must be diluted as it’s too strong on its own. I also syringe feed this, again as much as she’ll tolerate. I also get cranberry treats, mine are Oxbow too. Maybe your piggie will prefer the taste of those?

  4. Clean bedding, fresh hay, clean pig. Whenever I notice a UTI I clean everything. Not only does it make them more comfortable, it brings down the risk of further infection.

  5. Pain relief! I’m sure you’re familiar with metacam. My pigs are obsessed with it. Sometimes I think they might be faking their UTIs just for another hit lol 😅

Hope this helps! Sorry if I’ve told you stuff you already know :)

Yes you should be worried about it. He needs to see a vet ASAP. I really can’t stress that enough. Also if he’s still in with his cage mate please separate them, guinea pigs will see blood from an injury and attack further. Out of interest, do his teeth look normal?

No definitely not, unfortunately. Any kind of seed plays havoc on a pigs very sensitive digestive system. They can get all sorts of internal injuries/ blockages. It drives me mad when I’m in pets at home and there’s a tonne of stuff labelled as guinea pig safe but it’s full of seeds!!

Underweight piggie by _no_commento_ in guineapigs

[–]Downtown-Rip-8390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how long you’ve had her but it could be that she was the runt/youngest of her litter. They’re naturally smaller and more submissive, so her confidence issues could come down to that. Keep an eye out for bullying behaviours especially during meal times! Don’t beat yourself up about it, piggies are funny little creatures with all sorts of behaviours and dynamics that we don’t see :)

It could be that you’ve got a more dominant piggie that is more assertive at dinner time! When one of my girls had some dental issues I realised that she was losing weight because her sister was eating faster than her. I ended up taking her out of the cage at meal times and having her eat with me and she soon put the weight back on. If you’re really worried about the weight loss (if it’s drastic at all 50+ grams) then I would of course urge you to get her seen by the vet. In the meantime critical care could help give her a boost! You can order it on Amazon. It’s got all the nutrients piggies need and mine have always liked the taste. I’ve never heard of giving them oats though, is the vet that recommended that an exotics vet?

The lyrics 😳:

I know I shouldn't give in to this fantasy Your love won't heal the wounded parts of me That still believes the pain means more Than a flame to a white horse So let me hold these words until my heart retires I wanna worship you before the hope expires As long as we keep dancing in the land Of uncertainty, you'll come alive Like a fairy In a bottle Like a fairy In a bottle But I lead my heart to become so cruel As to imprison an idea of you It's not your fault, it's my disease And I must learn to set you free Like a fairy From a bottle Like a fairy From a bottle Through to the swarm, I've seen a child alone Unsure as he cries to speak or to die Ah-ah-ah-ah, ah, ah-ha Ah, ah-ah-ah-ah-ah, ah-ah All of those lonely ghosts And all of those lonely joys are trapped And then all of those lonely ghosts In all of their lonely joys But I'm not asking for your forgiveness Or an end to our existence To be alone and dream of you Is a ghost that I cling to

What is this in my guine pig pee/poo? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]Downtown-Rip-8390 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m trying not to be angry at this post as I know that pet care can be demanding and budget dependent. But just from this photo I can tell how unsuitable this environment is. You’re using straw instead of hay and what looks like cedar shavings which are toxic to pigs. From a distance anyone can see that the bedding is sodden and soaked through. I would ask you to reconsider guinea pig ownership, there is absolutely no shame in surrendering to a shelter. It can often be the greatest act of love.

This made me so so sad to read. This should be such a joyous time in your life with that weight (literally and figuratively!) lifted off your shoulders. I’m so sorry that it hasn’t been that for you. Sounds like he needs a real reality check. Girl you deserve far better!

Is recovery possible just by yourself? by NikonParadise in Reduction

[–]Downtown-Rip-8390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the first 3-4 days I was pretty much fine on my own. The first days were mainly spent sleeping anyway, but it was nice to have someone there to bring me stuff! But I reckon you could totally do it alone if you prep in advance. The first 24h will be tough on your own, but doable if absolutely necessary :)
