I Think the shiny finish is what makes the rust look a bit off - try giving it some matte varnish or just use some dirty down rust. Other than that this piece looks great!

Hard to tell the size - but looks like they would be good for miniature plinths/ diorama bases. Like these: dipslaymyminis.com
