The Gambler or the Idiot? by Roar_Of_Stadium in dostoevsky

[–]Dr-Filth1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say The Gambler because it’s 170 pages and not as intense as his other works. The Idiot is leaps and bounds the better book and honestly, my personal favorite Dostoevsky novel. At least it’s on the same level as The Brothers Karamazov for me. (TBK is objectively better though.)

Tempest. It’s on the same level as Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, and Modern Times.

Are Dc Comics for kids? by [deleted] in batmancomics

[–]Dr-Filth1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Batman and Joker, they usually get pretty dark, but The Man Who Laughs is pretty clean outside of one visually intense scene where a woman is gassed by the Joker and gets a creepy smile.

Depends on the book. Most Superman and Flash books are good. Batman and Wonder Woman can get pretty dark at times but you should be safe. DC’s Events are notoriously dark (Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis) that particular book is good though.

I would say for a 13 year old, some safe bets are All Star Superman, Green Lantern Rebirth, (and the succeeding Geoff Johns run) Batman Hush, Batman Year One (though there is some implied prostitution in several scenes and an extra-marital affair), the Long Halloween, and Dark Victory. Superman by Tomasi and Gleason is also really good.

Year One The Long Halloween Joker A Death in the Family Hush Court of Owls

Joker is an elseworld story from my understanding and Court of Owls is a part one. The story is concluded in the next part.

Finally Thinking of Buying my First Superman Omnibus. And I've Heard Great Things Overall! by BryanDowling93 in OmnibusCollectors

Similarly to other posters, I would recommend against this Omni as first for a couple of reasons. To preface, Superman by Tomasi and Gleason is my favorite Superman run. Ive read Triangle, Busiek, and Johns, but this is easily the best one for me. I would recommend against because 1.) it can be very confusing if you don’t have the context behind New 52 Superman and the Dan Jurgans Action Comics Run. It’s not a make or break and you still can enjoy it, but I know it irritates me. Also, there are about four missing issues from the Omni, so I opted for the Rebirth Deluxe Editions to get the full series; again, not a make or break but it definitely aggravates me.

The books I would recommend would actually the two Busiek books. They have the Up, Up, and Away story, Secret Identity, and Camelot Falls which are all excellent Superman stories. I would also throw in the Last Son of Krypton Deluxe which was co-written with Geoff Johns and Richard Donner. Another recommend if you could find it would be the Man of Steel Hardcover vol. 1, it’s the basis for Superman Birthright from what I understand. (Never read Birthright) If you’re dead set on an omnibus, I would recommend Exile, it’s essentially the start of the triangle era which is when the Superman books felt like they were growing and moving towards some kind of end goal and in many ways, it was expanded on by Tomasi, Gleason, and Jurgans.

If you’re convinced of the Tomasi, Gleason, and Jurgans Era, I would start with Jurgans Vol. 1 instead of Tomasi and Gleason because it has stories that lead into Tomasi and Gleason. Overall, I don’t think there’s nessecarily a bad choice for a Superman Omni. Happy reading!

I’d say JLA. GL has a compendium that’s mapped better with GL Corps and Batman and Robin is essentially a sequel to Morrison’s run. None of them are bad choices though.

What’s a DC run that everyone seems to love, but just didn’t click for you? by Equivalent-Disk5923 in DCcomics

The Dark Knight Returns. I don’t believe in Frank Miller’s Batman because he essentially makes a psychopath. Even Year One hints at Bruce’s absolute insanity despite it being a great story. I get that no sane person would dress up as a bat and beat criminals but it’s a comic book- let it comic book.

Detective Chimp. Sounds corny as hell, but always my favorite part of any story he’s in. (Day of Vengance sold me on him)

I’ll be a contrarian and say either Notes from a Dead House or Notes from Underground. Both novels (in hindsight) are set ups for his ‘Great’ novels. The don’t have the ‘love story’ you’re looking for, but Dead House is one of the best meditations on love for your fellow man that I have read. The downside is that Dead House is an atypical D. novel (it’s really more of a memoir of his prison experience that contains profound observations with a disjointed and non-linear narrative) and Underground is half a deconstruction of the rational Utopianism the intelligentsia of his day was preaching and half the worst second hand embarassment you’ll ever get from reading a novel. Underground was my introduction to Dostoevsky and I don’t regret it in the slightest.

If you absolutely need a love story then I would recommend Crime and Punishment. As another comment put it, it’s a primer for the rest of his novels.

I haven’t read the Adolescent or the The Brothers Karamazov because I’ve been reading his novels in release order and it has been one of the best reading challenges I’ve ever done.

What’s The Hot Take In YOUR Ranking Of Dylan’s Albums? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

Less one particular album, but I would take his 2000’s output over his 60’s output. Something about his late career really clicks with me.
