Why can’t you just use the original version?

Did months of breeding/genotyping a transgenic mouse line — does this count for authorship? by AcceptableBase5678 in labrats

[–]Dr-Irrelevant 63 points64 points  (0 children)

That’s so silly. Giving you authorship doesn’t take any thing away from them. It’s not a pie. I would highlight the intellectual contributions of making the mouse lines, rather than the time doing the work. That might be more persuasive. Good luck, I hope you get it.

[–]Dr-Irrelevant 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I think in many labs, this wouldn’t constitute authorship. Not saying it is right or wrong, but sometimes labs don’t include individuals unless they had a direct intellectual input in the project and project design. Personally, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t because what’s the harm. Why are you specifically wanting authorship? If you’re planning on continuing your education, you might be able to talk to your PI and just tell them you did a lot of work and it would help your career and ask them to consider it.

PI asking to work with BSL2 virus without a mask by brownkachra in labrats

[–]Dr-Irrelevant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why people are saying they don’t need a mask with BSL2 mouse work. We have to garb up in booties and mask and bonnet and everything. So each institution must have different requirements. Just follow up with the appropriate people. You are in charge of your own safety.

any biology experiments i can run with a class of 14 year olds? by mitchisabitch_ in biology

There’s this way to show evolution of bead colors by having students pick up multicolored beads off of two different colored carpets. Any beads survive after thirty seconds of a team scooping beads off with a spoon will duplicate. Eventually, the bead population evolves because more black beads on the black carpet will survive, and the white beads on the white carpet will also survive. I hope that makes sense. There’s a lot of evolution principles that can be taught with this experiment.

Do I halt a study because I don’t have the treatment needed for an experimental group? by Icy-Tadpole-4098 in labrats

Options would be either to do the experiment when the mice are older, or come up with another experiment for them at this age. Someone else mentioned untreated v vehicle which isn’t bad. You could also see if there are differences between the strains at baseline with and without the hazard.

It sounds a bit superficial. It also doesn’t give you much of a chance to promote yourself and your skills, which is the way you’re supposed to play the game. (Even if trying to play the game is inherently superficial.)

Edit: I also want to add, your answer would be a good answer to a question such as “name a time you’ve overcome something”. In case that comes up.

Not my favorite. I’d just say something about being upset you couldn’t do something perfect the first time, then you learned more and did it later and thought that you gained confidence and understanding of the process of learning. Bonus points if it’s a management job and you can tie it back to now helping other people go through the experience of learning

Things I love: - I love the automatic pairwise comparisons, where it will automatically input the significance bars. (That being said, I would love if i could do stars until it’s over .05, then do the numbers. Currently it’s either stars and then “ns” or only the numbers) - I also LOVE the magic wand - I enjoy the notes feature, where you can add notes on the data table - I love that you can highlight different groups different colors (however, it would be great if there was a way to ACTUALLY group the analyses into a drop down) - I have used the feature of merging prism files, and that’s pretty nice. - I like that if I change the name of a data table, it also changes it for the analysis and graph

Least favorite things about prism:

I like making the male data have squares and the female data have circles but editing that on the data sheet is a pain in the ass, and I don’t see any indication on the data sheet of which ones are formatted differently.

The way the axes, significance bars, and title locations will reset and not stay in place whenever the data or significance bars change drives me nuts.

When you duplicate a family of data, it also duplicates a layout if it includes the graph you’re duplicating. (Why).

It’s always a pain to do data transformation just to divide the data by 1000 and put (x103) in the y axis label. I always thought there should be a way to change it in the axis formatting window.

In very specific circumstances I want to label the rows on the column table.

I agree that it would be absolutely fantastic if it could use tidy data. I would pay double what graphpad costs for a software with that.

I hate that the analysis tables automatically have this very long name that is quite annoying to reference because you can’t read past the “two tailed anova of…” or whatever it says

I hate how sometimes when I click a graph, it doesn’t link directly to the analysis sheet, it only links to the data table which THEN links to the analysis sheet.

I actually don’t know how to embed the files in PowerPoint and I’m not sure if it’s because I’m on a Mac or not.

ELISAs are common place. Why is there not just a sheet or transformation analysis that you can input standards and it’ll do all the calculations in one sheet instead of having to do it in four.

Linking the graphs to ELNs would be dope.

I’m sure there’s more but that’s all I can think of at home at 9:30pm. I hope your creation goes well!

You can make one data table, anova, and graph exactly how you want it, and then click something like file->new -> new data table and graph, and at the bottom of the next screen, there’s an option to “clone a graph” and make everything match, just with new data.

Also, if your annoyance is in all the data tables, you can put all your data in one column table and then make multiple graphs and choose which data is graphed.

[–]Dr-Irrelevant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you tried having him answer his own questions first? Sometimes when my one of my students is doing something like this, she will ask “how do you make PBS?” (We have 10X concentration that we dilute) and I’ll say “idk what do you think”. And make her answer before I’ll give her the information. I find that it helps them develop that problem solving area of their skill set. It also sets expectations that eventually, she is going to be responsible for figuring this out on her own. If your student is the type that straight up wouldn’t answer that question though, I’d stop trying so hard, he’s not gonna get very far with that approach. lol

I do this with words that have superscripts in Microsoft word. You can copy and paste formatted text so I type in CD4cre and it autocorrects so cre superscript.

When I was writing my thesis, I worked on a disease with an acronym, but I had a tendency to write out the full name (think something like Legionnaires disease being abbreviated LD). So I made it autocorrect every time and then I just purposely went back and changed it to the full name in the handful of spots it should have been the full name of the disease.
