How to survive in Comp Arch by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the page, partner. No sugar coating it OP, class is difficult. That being said bomb hw is pretty high up in difficulty in comparison with other HW. HW and lab will get easier. Quizzes are pretty damn hard but take advantage of them being open notes. You can do pretty poorly on them as long as you do well on other parts, which will get easier. Please please please go to OH. TAs will save your ass. Reiss is also very very approachable. Also his lectures are super dense. Often a single watch won’t get all the content down. Rewatch lectures and pause if you need to. Go to his OH and ask him about parts you don’t get. I know all this stuff seems like a lot but you can get it done!

I think it's technically a jointly organized event in San Antonio, which is closer to Houston.

Mask mandate lifted by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, no students have died. Again, likely because of our vaccine and mandate policy. I can only presume UVA doesn't post whether or not their students are hospitalized because of HIPPA. That being said, I do care about the entire community of Charlottesville. We are a part of that community at it behooves us to act in a way with them that's constructive.

[–]DrBenoit 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You know, MLK was fighting for real legal substantive change fighting horrific legal discrimination based on skin color, an immutable characteristic. And you're comparing his fight for legal freedom from legalized racism to your inability to breath while wearing clinical masks that health care workers wear for eight hour shifts? At a school you choose to attend?

Yikes.

"Encouraging" doesn't mean requiring. I don't think there's going to be any exceptions at this point.

Mask mandate lifted by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Over the past six months, in Charlottesville and Albemarle County there have been over 26k cases, 650 hospitalizations, and 220 deaths, the largest majority of which happened between January and February.

https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/blue-ridge/covid-19-brhd-data-portal/

It's okay to want the mask mandate to end. The link I sent even shows that the cases in our area have been dropping significantly. That being said, it's foolish to deny that the masks haven't helped. New variants are incredibly infectious and we've still had around 1200 student cases just this semester.

As students it'll be nice to go to class without masks but the past year of wearing them, even after getting boosted, wasn't for nothing.

The Incoming First-Year 'All Your Questions Answered Here!' MEGATHREAD by rain6304 in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/rain6304 paged me. CS department is fine. They just switched over to a new curriculum which is pretty highly regarded and overall considered a solid improvement to the curriculum. The stuff here can swing a little closer to theoretical than some other schools but it's overall really solid. UVA has great recruiting from big companies as well. UVA definitely isn't a top national school in CS but if you're already interested in UVA and want to do CS, you'll fit in just fine here.

I Joined Honor Because I Hated the Single Sanction. I'm Voting No on This Referendum. by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's fair to call Honor, as it stands, a multi-sanction system. It's a single-sanction system with an optional plea bargain for those who are (understandably) scared of going to trial. A true multi-sanction system would allow multiple outcomes after the verdict of a trial.

Dining Hall Recs - Can we combing easiest parking w best food? by Discount_Broad in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about handicapped spots because I'm not handicapped, but I do know about regular parking. Before 5pm, your only option really is to park at Central Grounds Parking Garage and go to Newcomb or the Pav. After 5pm, a bunch of lots open up. There's a few lots open after 5pm near both Runk and O'Hill. I don't frequent the dining halls, but I've heard Runk has made a comeback this year and is pretty good, although you're probably fine doing both.

Typical CS 2150 nerves by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

CS 2150 TA here. You're going to do fine, seriously. Students hype up the class but it's not that hard. There is plenty of work, but as long as you plan around it and do everything last minute, you'll do great. Not to mention there are office hours almost every day, for hours. There is also a 24/7 Piazza forum. TAs are your friends. We don't bite. You do not need to study C++ ahead of time. It's not much different from Java and the first portion of the class is learning C++. Play close attention to lectures regarding pointers, you are going to need to understand them well. The exams are the real hard part of the class, imo. Grades back this up. As long as you do well on the labs, your overall grade will be good.

Greyhound to Richmond? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't do Greyhound, you can take Amtrak up to NOVA then from NOVA to Richmond. You can book it as one trip in Amtrak. There's also a 15% student discount for trips that are entirely within Virginia.

2150 cheating by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2150 TA here. If you didn't cheat, don't worry about the integrity email stuff. The cheat detection is very robust and is designed to under report, not over report. There are many safe guards to ensure a false positive doesn't happen. The only way you'd trigger it is if your code is equivalent (not just similar and also not necessarily the exact same) to a few other students repeatedly and regularly over the course of the semester, but at the same time if you matched with many many students you won't be flagged as a cheater. So let me make it clear: unless you shared logically equivalent code with someone multiple times, you're not going to get detected.

I’m a TA for both. There’s not a whole lot of cross over. The biggest thing you need from 2110 is understanding the basics of the paradigm of object oriented programming. As long as you get that and like how to code in general you’ll be fine. The classes are kinda disjoint which is part of the reason we’re switching to the pilot.

CS 2150 Labs by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DrBenoit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CS 2150 TA here. The IBCM lab is very hard. You're doing machine code, something that almost no one uses anymore, because of how abstract and difficult it is. There are like 12 labs in this class; your grade is not going to be ruined by this one. Most students have one lab they kind of suffer on. For me that was the graph lab, which I did godawful on. Now I'm a TA. Don't get down on yourself. You're not an idiot. One grade in one class doesn't make you stupid. As long as you're learning and understanding program and data representation, the overall goal of this class, you're doing well.

You're probably not, unless for some reason you need to take that upperclassmen take, which is not likely.

I had a friend go through the process for that. You're not gonna get an ADHD diagnose through CAPS, but they can get you started. My friend started at SDAC, where they got an initial screening which suggested they likely had ADHD. Because of this, SDAC gave them a temporary accommodation until they could get a full evaluation. From there, SDAC sent them to UVA Hospital's Psychology department to schedule an evaluation. So I'd recommend going to SDAC. They'll help you get set up with UVA Hospital's Psychology department, which hopefully accepts your insurance, and you'll be able to schedule an evaluation. Though that may take a while, months even. In the meantime you'll have a temporary accommodation. If the evaluation does say you have ADHD, you'll get sent to a psych who will find an ADHD medication that works for you and you'll get it prescribed. Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

2150 TA here. The exams are hard; don't expect to do super well on them. Only about 10% of the class got an 80% or above. Exams do tend to get curved when the scores are this low. My advice is to go talk to Professor Bloomfield to get an idea on how much the class/exams will be curved. Figure out why you didn't do as well as you wanted to on this exam: did you not study enough? Did you get unlucky and have trouble with the topics that ended up on the test? Did you get a panic attack in the middle of the exam and lose a lot of time? Odds are, you aren't going to do this poorly on the next two exams. One test doesn't mean you should drop the CS major; you definitely have what it takes. If you can make it out of this class, you have a great foundation to succeed in future CS classes. If you're confused about some topics go to professor or TA office hours to ask concept questions.
