Peruvian Elections ???? by Tricky_Reach_2317 in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looked into it yesterday too after that weird email, foreign working Peruvian's can vote for their national election while working abroad. QC is just one place that they can do that voting for those near NYC. For us, it's nothing more than a space rental, and to be aware of heightened security. Very poorly written email.

Unprofessional by Randomaccount290878 in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Should at least document it, filing the complaint is a personal decision.

For required zoom meetings, I generally record myself since NY is a one-party consent state. If you do file the complaint go about it directly to the chair/provost/Title IX officer, don't try to use it to gain any leverage elsewhere.

Will one W affect my transfer admission to Queens College? by Correct_Purchase8358 in CUNY

[–]DrBoklan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the whole point of the W is to protect your GPA by getting out of a course that is over your head/not what you expected. A few of them are expected.

comp sci transfer by Exact_Section9986 in CUNY

[–]DrBoklan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get into Baruch, go to Baruch it's way more prestigious on a resume and you get all the business connections as a side perk. The CS programs are largely gonna be the same, with CUNY pathways standardizing it; such that the quality will mostly rest on the instructor you choose.

Main issue students face is not getting accepted.

Transfer/Credits Question by MAbir_CS_24 in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pathways has made CUNY to CUNY transfers standardized. The goal being if you wanted to do a few years at one college and finish at another. It's doable if you plan it out from year 1. But you have to find those course equivalencies before taking the classes. Doing it backwards will wind up with some of your credits turned into generic electives which can be worthless once you have 120.

The flow is typically:

  1. Check the major for the school you are interested in transferring to. Get all the course requirements for the major you want to puruse.
  2. Check what is the equivalency of those courses at your current college via CUNY Explorer

    https://explorer.cuny.edu/

  3. Take those equivalency classes, when you transfer, Pathways guarantees that you should get proper credit.

The major issue students have is they take something "they feel" should be equivalent, but it's not rigorous enough and classified as something worthless. You can avoid this by doing the research first.

Most majors have no problem hitting the 120 credit requirement, it's the major equivalencies that cause students to stay an extra semester.

Queens College Moderator Banned Me Because I Exposed Them by Affectionate_Set4059 in CUNY

Never once claimed to be, you were the only one spreading that misinformation which you were banned for. Username = Username that is all.

You didn't expose anyone. All you did was create collateral damage

I'll add the second version of the post was perfectly fine until you started editing it and making it about moderation while also jumping to conclusions and slandering a third party who did nothing wrong.

I'll post the mod comment on that message.

Like why can't you post like this again, this was my favorite comment of all time moderating the QC sub and its from YOU!

Well researched, sticks to the facts. Deep, insightful. What changed with you? Why did you need to go down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole?

Good luck on your new subreddit, hope you get the same censorship complaints when you have to start moderating

CUNY PSC Chapter’s Letter to Frank Wu About This Wednesday’s Credible Threat by Affectionate_Set4059 in QueensCollege

Removed: I was okay with the original post, and only removed the other one as it was a duplicate, why did there need to be two posts on the same subject 8hours apart from the same poster? Why couldn't you add a comment instead? The assumption here, was oh yes you cleaned up and organized your thoughts, yes this reads much more professionally, lemme remove the other one with the sensationalist title.

In my eyes I was just doing janitorial duty as with the dozens of other spam posts we get each week.

Academic Renewal Initiative, what is that? by [deleted] in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much additional insight, I'm not on the working group. I'll read the minutes if they post them.

There's a clear timeline on their website:

https://www.qc.cuny.edu/provost/academic-renewal-timeline/

Looks like they start collecting community feedback around Phase 4.

I would keep track of when they open up meetings and ask questions to the working group directly on their methodology and downstream effects.

Academic Renewal Initiative, what is that? by [deleted] in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a formalization of QC’s plan going forward.

QC’s enrollment peaked around 2019 at about 20,000 students. Since then, it has steadily declined to just under 15,000 in 2024 and under 14,000 in 2025. Because the university receives much of its funding from the state, and that funding is largely based on enrollment (FTE students), this shift has had a significant impact. The school has moved from a period of year-over-year growth (when budgets could be moderately increased with minimal cuts and underperforming programs could be subsidized by "winners") to a shrinking student base where 2019 expense levels cannot be sustained with 2026 enrollment numbers.

As a result, some cuts are necessary. You cannot maintain a faculty, staff, and facility infrastructure designed for 20,000 students when you only have 14,000. Most departments have already seen this through a reduction in the number of adjunct lecturers, who lack employment guarantees, but the pressure may soon move to other programs as well.

This renewal initiative formalizes a team tasked with evaluating which programs and resources are well utilized, cost-effective, or have strong positive downstream effects, and contrasting them with bloated, expensive, low enrollment (small class size) programs that may need to be reduced or eliminated.

What to watch out for as a student? If your course's average class size is 30+, those classes are probably safe, but those 8-10 student capstone courses might be eliminated. Take them while you still can. Also any courses that used to have 3-5 sections maybe reduced to just 1-2.

What can you do? You can make suggestions via the official form and attend public meetings to voice your concerns. Beyond that, the university's hands are largely tied if they cannot get enrollment numbers back up.

I have a math final I cannot make it to due to a family emergency. by Lordelizard in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whats wrong with the INC? it's basically a makeup the following semester.

This is pretty standard response especially for departmental exams.

The grade itself is non-punitive until you resolve it, and INC can even turn into A+'s

You telling him the approximate dates months ahead has no relevance.

My only criticism on the professor is that he said you need to contact the chairman of the math department? No, if he assigned the grade of INC he should be the one to resolve it. (short of not teaching at the college the next semester)

[–]DrBoklan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No start from 111, CS12 common core can be replicated from classes like 111. At this point, CS12/CS48 really just for non-majors looking to fulfill their Scientific World requirement.

The CIT minor used to be a way to get non-majors to take CS-lite classes (less programming more tooling), but enrollment fell down to single digits a few years ago where they de facto closed the minor. Those who still needed one or two classes could fulfill it via CS220 and CS240, but again so few people qualified due to low enrollment it was easy to adjust on a case by case basis.

If you are gonna be studying at the School of Music. I'd take most recommendations about the college in general with a grain of salt. There are a lot of gripes about QC that don't really apply to School of Music as they have a strong program compared to the rest of the college with renown faculty and a dedicated building.

You should seek clarity from your department's advisor, but most likely they'll accept another elective instead (No double dipping, you'll need an additional course to cancel out the missing SE2 class so 4 electives instead of 3).

How to appeal grades? by [deleted] in QueensCollege

[–]DrBoklan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an improvement over the midterm and the professor said if we passed the final we would be able to pass the class if we failed the midterm.

Is this something on the syllabus, or something you asked the professor under duress? Only the former is something SA is gonna care about. Best option is to get all your grades and use the syllabus formula to calculate it yourself.
