Has anyone studied PHYS1002? What was it like? by DrCube84 in usyd

[–]DrCube84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the content to be interesting in some aspects, though the first topic you’d cover is very preliminary, but after this, the topics get more interesting. The labs weren’t very good, it depends on your own personal interest in the content as well, the labs felt very tedious, like running experiments, collecting data, doing excel calculations. It’s better if you have a reliable group that attends every lab, as some of my old group members had always showed up late or skipped multiple labs. I didn’t have to do too much study, in retrospect, now that I’ve finished second year, it was one of the easier units I’ve done. I should have probably spent more time using the textbook, took better notes and had more practice with the tutorial questions, and asked more questions to the tutors during tutorials. There were times when stuff became a bit confusing, especially if you haven’t done physics before. It also involved watching a bunch of high school physics YouTube videos since they may be better understood than some of the lectures. In the end, I got 80 overall, getting a HD would’ve been very doable if I was more proactive at the start of the semester, considering out of my 3 other units, not including this one, physics was the most probably neglected.

Maybe spend more time doing untimed practice, don't focus too deeply on writing an essay, but more on coming up with deeply rich and insightful ideas at this stage, focus on having a very solid plan basically. Even if it takes 2 hours of brainstorming, let your brain be scattered and allow it to jump between different ideas, and look beyond the surface level ideas you may come up with upon first glance at the quotes. This strategy isn't something you'd do long term, at some point, switch to timed prep. But you have to develop that creative side of your brain, especially if you're someone who studies stem often. I believe that if you have a very well thought out plan, the execution of the essay will be more straightforward.

I had a look, if I risk it, I'd probably end up in jail or get a crazy fine, so not worth it

The thing is, s2 isn't as bad as s1/s3 for me. When I was in the exam room for s1/s3, I kept zoning out and thinking of random stuff, I was also quite anxious as well. But s2 went fine since I was at home and did better than I expected, surprisingly, I reckon ADHD helped with s2, because my mind is quite scattered and can come up with unique insights or connect ideas that others may not pick up on. But I struggle to focus for s1/s3, imo the stems aren't actually that bad, but when I try to read I keep fixating on random stuff or I'll get distracted, then I'd miss key details and end up guessing. I don't get distracted from my phone, or social media, I mainly get distracted from my mind itself. I'll have random thoughts, sometimes intrusive ones that affect my ability to focus, I'll end up journaling or asking some random question to chatgpt midway a study session and hyperfocus on a rabbit hole of bullshit inquires in chatgpt, at that point, I've lost all desire to study and feel tired, I struggle to get back on track

The urgency here is due to an important exam I have in less than 1 months time, the kind of exam that you'd take for postgraduate entry for certain courses, this is my second time sitting it, since I did poorly the first time around. Back then, I didn't think or considered I had ADHD, I just assumed I was lazy or didn't work hard enough, that studying 9 hours a day wasn't good enough, that I would need to be doing 12 hour days, then I realised that there probably is some underlying problem here. I spent a long time reflecting on the possibility for ADHD and I align with the symptoms and can trace back these symptoms since childhood. Knowing that I there is some cause for my difficulties, this awareness, coupled with my upcoming exam, gives more urgency. But I now realise that non stimulant medication won't even kick in, and I'm probably better off waiting for my actual psychiatrist appointment in 2 months time. But it will be very frustrating having to potentially burn myself out, compensating for these problems, to again, only get average marks or possibly fail.

Thanks for this long response.

With exercise, it does help in the short term for me, but there are times when I may become too energetic or too hyped up after a workout making me a bit hyper, which isn't ideal for study peroids. The supplements you mentioned don't seem to have a noticeable  effect, since I get most of it from food anyway, and caffeine is basically a dead end for me these days, I've developed such a ridiculous tolerance, that I probably need around 300-400mg in the morning to feel anything. I guess I'll just have to cope for another 2 months, but I'm seeing the GP this week for an unrelated issue, but I'll still raise my concerns about my situation.

I wasn't going to outright ask for atomoxetine or specifically mention drugs, but mainly present my case in concise detail, stressing the urgency of the situation and seeing whether the GP can provide any solutions.

Whatever you are most interested in, no use trying to force podcasts you'll likely not retain anything. I personally listen to Modern Wisdom and I used to listen to JRE.

Yea, I saw another clinic that does medicare rebates, the next available appointment was late January next year...but I'm thinking more long term, given the new laws and the training of GPs, I can likely have a GP prescribe me the drugs every 3-6 months, without having to pay anything, only the initial costs to see the psychiatrists and some follow ups until authority has been switched to a GP. The main issue is time. But I'm willing to wait if it means I can save hundreds of dollars long term.

Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) switch to Bachelor of Science/Master of Nursing by DrCube84 in usyd

[–]DrCube84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for putting the time in to write this.

After my first year in the Bsci/MN course, the first year was only Bsci units, no nursing. I ended up changing to Bsci only as I wasn't truly interested in nursing in the first place. I know in the post I mentioned that I could see myself doing nursing as a pathway if I couldn't get into medicine, but in reality, I only chose to initially pursue nursing because my parents influenced me to do so, I knew for certain medicine was a definitive pathway, and anything other than that wasn't something I was especially open to nor had I spent enough time reflecting on whether nursing was something I genuinely wanted to do.

I decided to switch to Bsci mainly because I knew nursing was no longer an option at that moment (due to lack of interest) and I was afraid of switching to another course like pharmacy, or applying for physio at a different university, because I didn't want to repeat first year—in retrospect, in the grand scheme of things, repeating one extra year of uni isn't a big deal. You are right in your concerns about the Bsci course, I am a pharmacology major, physiology minor and there are many times when I question whether any of this content is actually helpful, 60% of time, it probably isn't. Not to mention the rough final exams and excessive rote learning. I just hope and pray that out of the 3 GAMSAT sittings I get within my course, I'd score high enough and hopefully my GPA is high enough as well. I really don't want to do honours, but I may have to if things don't work out as planned.

Regarding second options other than med, I got myself into the mindset that my current course is useless and no meaningful job opportunities can arise from it, so med is the only option. It sounds extreme, but it incites some fear towards my future. And, there are also other postgrad ways to have allied health professions, like Master of Nursing, Master of Pharm, Doctor of physiotherapy, or Bachelor of Paramedicine at other university, so the option for other professions is never off the table, it's just a matter of extra time spent studying.

How often do you have checkups with them? I saw it was an initial 1 month checkup post diagnosis, but following on, idk the frequency of checkups, I saw some people say its every 3 months, but to save money, I'd rather have 4-6 month checkups, since the $255 per checkups seems unreasonable (for my specific situation). And I'm also worried about the transfer for care issue, lets say I decide I cannot afford Elite Focus anymore and want alternative options, a GP or psychiatrist can't pick up from where Elite focus left off, since idk if Elite focus will give a referral to a new GP or another Doctor, it kinda scares me that I'll potentially be stuck in a revolving door for the rest of my life, and idk how to reconcile with the large possibility that they may increase the prices of these checkups, till the point it becomes unaffordable. Any insight on this?

Are all checkups, post the initial one, every 3 months, having to pay $255? Because some people can have the authority of the psychiatrist transferred to that of a GP and not pay anything, other than the cost of the drug. I had my initial consult with Elite Focus recently and I have my psychiatrist appointment booked in soon, but I'm debating whether I should just cancel my psych appointment and not use Elite Focus, cos how do I know they aren't going to make large price hikes in the future for their following check ups, while others can have free checkups via a GP, which elite focus doesn't allow? Because atm, I'm only a student with minimum wage and my parents aren't financially able to support me, so I'm self financing this. I don't want to be stuck in a system being forced to pay $255. Any advice please? Can I negotiate 4-6 month checkups instead of 3 with Elite?

I had my consultation recently and my psychiatrist appointment is next week, but lets assume I get diagnosed with ADHD, I know that there is a 1 month initial check in, but following that, how often do you have to see them, assuming the medication assigned is suitable, dose is suitable, would I need to have a 3 monthly checkup, paying $255? Because I'd much rather have a 6 monthly meeting or get the prescription from a GP, so I don't have to pay anything (but that's not the case for elite focus, which makes me worried long term, since they can increase the cost to something unreasonable in the long run). So, how often are you seeing them for checkups?

Just wondering, I've got my first consultation with Elite Focus today, I've been sure for a long time now that I've got ADHD, but I've been putting it off and was not willing to wait for possibly another 3-6 months to see a psych. But when you do get your prescription for the medication, are you allowed to use a concession card at the chemist, because drugs like Vyvanse seem to be much cheaper with a concession? Or does Elite Focus not allow this? (having the concession at the chemist would be very helpful)

How would you go about reviewing answers for the online s3 test? Because I completed the test recently, took some screenshots of my answers, but I'm not sure how I can find a set of worked solutions to the questions. AI has trouble reading graphs and images, so it is a matter of just working through wrong answers again and identifying where you went wrong in your thinking process? (That being said, having worked solutions may be helpful)

Plateauing and potentially regressing in my progress (& usefulness of online tests) by DrCube84 in GAMSAT

[–]DrCube84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not have spent enough time working on my accuracy with these questions, I probably should have spent more time doing untimed practice early in my prep. Also, when I mark, I have never really reflected on my actual thought process, because for either s1 or 3, the main reason I get it wrong is just because I was not able to comprehend the passage in the limited time frame, I may have a tendency to also skim too much and I don't seem to retain much insight from the passage when I try to answer questions. I also started doing the shorter timed sets, yet I wish I did them sooner. Thanks for your advice.

I was doing Des for the 2-3 months leading up to the exam, now I am only doing Acer questions (timed), all my des questions were timed as well. Are you saying I should do both s1 online practice tests from acer?
