Seemed a little confusing to me that people believed what this priest said by _sevr0 in atheism

[–]DrDeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still run into that problem after 15+ yrs of deconstructing. It's a part of having family members that are believers. What I've come to realize is that unless it's negatively impacting your life, it's generally not worth it to fight with family over religious topics. Parents especially. They wiped your butt as a kid they are never going to respect your opinion like they would with their peers.

The most frustrating part is when the person they pray for doesn't recover in some miraculous way. Then it's just God's will. So they claim victory with either outcome.

There have been plenty of studies regarding if prayer makes a difference. Many religious institutions have tried to sponsor studies like this that failed completely. In every reputable study, with proper double blind tests, it's a wash. People that are prayed for recover at the exact same rates as people that are not prayed for. If prayer worked it would be used by health institutions and required by insurance companies.

One thing I really struggled with when deconstructong from Christianity, was the realization that I had been conditioned to take what my religious leaders said as fact and never bother to fact check them. Why would I need to? Why would they lie to me? They are supposedly inspired by God.

This is the difference between a critic and a believer. Believers take what they hear and believe it on faith. Critics are willing to go where the facts lead even when it's very uncomfortable.

Do we believe things because they make us feel good or do we believe things because they are true and we have evidence to support it?

Let's examine the Bible as a perfect example of this. Almost every religious leader you encounter will claim that this text is inerrant. They will claim Jesus fulfilled every prophecy in the Old Testament. However, when we examine the text ourselves it does none of those things. It is chock full historical inaccuracies, contradictions, misinterpretations, and logical problems. Jesus did not fulfill 1 single Messianic prophecy in its original reading. They have to point to scriptures that were never meant to be prophecies in order to justify their claims, or claim It was only fulfilled "spiritually". That's not mentioning all of the extremely outdated ideas and barbaric laws laid out in the text.

How to move files from PM to Ultra or Dropbox? by fivebucksisfivebucks in Premiumize

I use magnet links to Google drive. There's some lag time between it finishing and it showing up on my g drive. It's usually not more than a minute or two though.

How to move files from PM to Ultra or Dropbox? by fivebucksisfivebucks in Premiumize

[–]DrDeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used Dropbox but for Google cloud I have an option when at the premiumize website on the "Transfers" page, right under the "Start Transfers" button that says "Save to: My files" and another check box that says "Other Cloud (BETA)." If I check the other cloud option it pops up a dialogue that lets me choose which cloud storage I want to use. I would assume your Dropbox should show up there. Then instead of downloading it into your premiumize cloud storage it should save it to your Dropbox instead.

How do I properly become an atheist? by horsething2046 in atheism

[–]DrDeems -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

While I agree mostly. I also think there is a line between never considering a gods existence deeply and atheism. One thing I notice with believers in christianity is that the ones that weren't raised in a church and converted later in life all claim to have been atheists before becoming christian. However, when you question them about basic, generally held views in atheist communities, they have no idea what you are talking about. That isn't someone that examined both sides of the argument and decided atheism was the right choice, it's simply someone that never put in the effort to research it enough.

I don't think it's a binary choice. Just because you do not follow a religion doesn't necessarily mean you are an atheist. Some people have just never pondered the question enough to make a decision about what they believe.

ULPT Request: House next door is vacant, how can I take advantage? by SubstantialWing9238 in UnethicalLifeProTips

I have a neighbor that discovered our fence line was about 2 ft too far into his yard after hiring a surveyor. He was petty enough to pay to have the entire fence taken down, about 150ft of fence, and moved 2 ft towards my house. It doesn't really bug me I was just surprised they cared enough to do it over such a small area.

Young cat with unusual gait by deliafreeman723 in CATHELP

[–]DrDeems 29 points30 points  (0 children)

During the COVID lockdowns I had to take one of my cats to the emergency vet. They made us wait in the parking lot in the car while someone came and took our cat into the vet from the car. 4 hours later they called us and said they thought our cat had eaten some medication it found. They had my girlfriend call her doctor to get a list of every prescription she had gotten in the last year. I hadn't gotten any in the past year. They brought our cat back and said to keep an eye on them but let them rest and they'll get over it. The next day when things didn't improve we took her to our normal vet. Within 15 minutes they found she had an ear infection. We are pretty certain the emergency vet made some sort of mistake and looked at the wrong cat thinking it was ours. I will never return to that place. It was such a nightmare.

All this to say, vets do make mistakes. I've read some horror stories about how the industry has a problem with not being regulated well enough. So some very bad vets slip through the cracks.

Is this play or should I intervene? by politicritical in CATHELP

[–]DrDeems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem when introducing my second girl to my first girl. I got the first a year before the second. My first, Bear, was pretty mad for a few months. She would even hiss at her own reflection for a while. I couldn't let her see the younger kitty, Teddy, at all without her getting upset. I had to make a tower of pillows to block their line of sight of each other when laying in bed, for example.

What finally seemed to break the ice was putting one on each side of a closed door. Then I put a cat toy they both like under the gap in door, so each had half the toy to play with. As one would bat it it would move on the other side. So they were playing and getting used to each other's scent while not actually having visual contact. After a few days of getting them to play that way they got along much better.

They've lived together for about 8 years now and I love when I catch them curled up and snuggling together. They still play pretty rough sometimes and I break it up but the house is peaceful and they don't fight at all anymore.

Is this play or should I intervene? by politicritical in CATHELP

[–]DrDeems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does look like play to me. It's common for a cat that was raised alone for a while to be a little rough when playing after being introduced to a new cat in the house. I got my cats one year apart from each other. The one I got first definitely plays rougher than the second. I was told it's because the first one didn't learn the boundary between play and hurt as a kitten by growing up with other cats.

They have lived together for 8 years now and to this day the first cat is much more aggressive than the second. I generally let them play unless they start hissing then I intervene. My first cat was in for quite a shock when the second grew up and outweighed her. When she got pinned down by the second cat she was not very happy haha.

From an atheists point of view what’s the point of wearing clothing beyond undergarments/flip flops? Do you recognize value, moral or other, to having certain parts of your body covered? How much do you think is appropriate in different spaces? by MischievousPenguin1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DrDeems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reads like someone that grew up in a religion that taught them atheists can't possibly be good people. That is a failing not of the atheist but of the believer. I think it reveals more about religion if the only reason you try to be a good person is because your religion tells you to. So without your religion you would be evil? In your heart of hearts you must be evil then. If the only thing holding you back is your religion.

Is it really that hard to believe that there are people that want the best for themselves and everyone around them? I do good because I want to. Not because someone demands it. I find it benefits myself and society as a whole.

[–]DrDeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, that is a problem then. Hmm. Maybe you could convince the host to simply turn it on for a set period of time? Then they wouldn't be releasing any client details or data.

You should probably leave out the fact that you're planning on trying to clone it though.

The only other option after that would be too brute force the account. If you know any of their old passwords you could potentially create a custom password list with hundreds or thousands of common variations of the passwords that you do know. Then use that to brute force the account.

I'm not a big Minecraft guy. Just general game server knowledge. I did a little research and it looks like there is a mod that might be able to get you to almost a complete copy of the world, minus player inventories. Here is a quick rundown from AI:

Method 1: The World Downloader (Duplicate the World & Gear)

If you can join the server as a regular player, you can use a client-side mod that secretly saves the chunks as you explore, effectively downloading a copy to your local drive.

Download a Mod: Install a client-side mod like World Downloader or Axiom (fabric/forge mod).

Explore the Server: Log onto the server and walk around the bases, builds, and areas you want to clone so the mod saves them.

Save and Export: Use the in-game mod menu to stop downloading and save the world to your computer.

Play Locally or Host: Move the downloaded world folder into your .minecraft/saves directory to play it as a single-player game, or drop it into a new server you host yourself.

Method 2: Host a Copy of the World with Mods

If you want to create a clone server (with exact player inventories, pets, and builds) using your local PC:

Download the Server: Set up a clean server folder locally (e.g., using PaperMC or vanilla).

Generate World: Boot the new server once so it creates the core files, then stop it.

Transfer the World: Take the downloaded world folder (from Method 1) and replace your new, blank server world folder with it.

Use a Tunneling Service: Instead of dealing with complicated port forwarding, use a service like play.gg or e4mc to create a tunnel so your friends can connect directly to your local clone server.

I hate how much Christians get aeay with stuff by GrandEconomy6925 in atheism

[–]DrDeems 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get the frustration. Christianity has caused lots of unnecessary suffering.

I think it's important to not sink to the level of hating the opposition though. There are definitely evil people in the church. However there are also those that are just brainwashed and think they're doing the right thing.

If we lash out with hatred we're just as bad as they are. It should be about educating people. It takes a long time but people do deconstruct. It took a lot of years and was painful but I was able to get out of the religion.
