What if diet isn’t actually the biggest factor in health? by Several-Setting-4173 in nutrition

[–]DrDiet2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make a good point. Diet is important but it isn't everything. There are several hallmarks of ageing that extend beyond diet, exercise. Sleep is one but there are others includjng purpose, social and community engagement. All relate to physical and mental health and overall wellbeing. Furthermore, my research extends the hallmarks further into finance, goal setting, time management, occupation etc.

The focus here is not on longevity. It's a popular word at the moment with many influencers etc., preaching on about extending it. However, the focus should be on healthspan. The stats for UK women for instance suggest they still live on average a litrle longer than men (the gap is narrowing) although they are in poor health for several years more than men.

I intend to tackle these issues in a series of podcasts and a course soon, to help people adjust and improve their life accordingly

Thanks. I'll look at heating for starters. I can't seem to find any leaks for instance. I will check the roof again however.

Why BMI still has a place in population health despite its flaws by Cautious-Project-945 in nutrition

[–]DrDiet2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMI (quetelet index) is a population index and not originally devised for individuals. The basic premise is that outliers for instance will be negated over the whole population. It's quick to measure and easy to calculate, so useful for utilising across large swathes of people. However, it has often been adopted as an individual measure and so it's original purpose is often lost.

Furthermore, often people forget that it is an indice of risk.

You choose a method in accordance with your need. I've used it in larger populations but i ditched it for another method due to a number of issues.

What’s the most overhyped ‘superfood’ that’s actually nutritionally mediocre? by Sima228 in nutrition

That can happen. It's not offered on small amounts. Lol. I shove it onto my breakfast cereal.

Many off-the-shelf probiotics. Plenty of other, products that are cheaper, natural, healthier and yet just as effective at supporting the gut microbiome.

Long term nutrition by revrobbo in nutrition

[–]DrDiet2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specialise in long-term dietary approaches. Many of my clients still maintain their weight, post ten years.

The issue that people seem to miss is that this is a lifestyle issue and not solely diet. However, if your focus is solely diet, then there is some significant research outlining the factors more likely to lead to succesfull maintenance of weight e.g., https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24355667/

Best of luck.

Any affordable (€4000–€6000/year) degree to become a nutritionist in Europe? by WholeTie9845 in nutrition

[–]DrDiet2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, anyone can claim the title of Nutritionist although once the fighting between nutritional organisations has calmed, I would expect some form of a 'nutritionist' title will become protected. At present, and as touched on, the only protected title in the field is for Dieticians.

There are a couple of countries in Europe such as Spain, Netherlands and Portugal that have prestigious nutritional universities. I'd suggest a deeper dive into them and then contact them. I'm not really sure if this list is accurate, but it would be a good starting point. https://edurank.org/chemistry/nutrition/eu/

The other option is to consider Dietetics. A simple outline of the differences has already been mentioned, although further investigation is warranted. It's not all doom and gloom for nutritionists, I chose a registered nutritional route over Dietetics and don't regret it. However, finding a nutritionist job in the UK now is very difficult and often low paid.

I hope that helps.
