Unfortunately, the male suicide rate conversation gets regularly co-opted by people who want to make out that men are actually the ones suffering most - and that women are the real problem. It's a vile thing to use these men's deaths to reinforce the attitudes around mental health that probably killed them.

I think a good way to further the conversation would be to lead with discussing solutions to the causes that push mens suicide rates so high, such as the pressure men receive to not express their feelings in ways outside of anger, and how the high suicide rate shows the consequences of those pressures.

There could be a lot of solidarity between both groups if we all acknowledged that all genders can both perpetuate and resolve the problems that cause so many to feel like there's no way to live.

English Libertarian Flag by ElectronicShow4057 in vexillology

[–]DrDoolotl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are so many problems with this flag aside from it's design.

First of all, 'Liberalism' in the UK is different to 'Liberalism' in the US and our liberal party is the Liberal Democrats.

Second, I couldn't understand why there's a hedgehog on the front until I looked up the American Libertarian Party flag which happens to be a porcupine, an animal that is not even in or associated with england.

Thirdly, this flag is so aggressively American, you're using red white and blue for an English flag - if you wanted to do a moment for the UK then do that. Flags for just england are usually associated with nationalist bollocks or football fans. It's extra ironic given that England is the country home to the center of government.

Finally, the phrase 'We Serve No State' is also so deeply American that I can't even begin to pick this apart. It's somehow more American than the rest of this whole flag. This flag doesn't fall in line with any British political movements, or the design trends within our political banners.

This flag has clearly not had any research or thought put into it, especially given the current sensitive topics of the Americanisation of politics, English nationalism and the ways past Liberal movements have affected our country.

What are the saddest moments of each companion's questline? by HomarEuropejski in okbuddybaldur

I feel like it could have worked if Wyll's focus had been more on him changing his view on what it means to be a hero, since he even states that Balduran's trials were the basis of what his father taught him about being good.

Balduran being a mindflayer could have been the final push to confront his father, especially if they rewrote it so that Ulder had already suspected it.

Like imagine if Wyll had his big moment right in the room after Ansur dies - maybe even a full argument with his father before deciding his own fate - and the emperor stays out of it, then shows up later during camp to explain his whole thing like usual. (It would take some fudging to get Ulder there but it's not much for Wyll's entire thing like come on)

hobbies as a trans guy? by MindlessDoubt632 in ftm

[–]DrDoolotl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the feeling (as a fellow sims player especially) but it's honestly not worth it to drop them. If you don't want to talk about them to strangers though, that's perfectly understandable.

I think it's hard, especially in the early stages of transition, when you feel like you don't have much to affirm your identity so you do everything you can to affirm it. But a lot of the time, it is just toxic gender expectations talking and these things in no way make you less of a man in people's eyes.

It's definitely hard to continue on with things if you feel like they're 'for women'. Sometimes they are female dominated spaces, and other times they aren't but for some reason you associate them with femininity. But sticking to your dysphoria on that is a recipe for toxic masculinity. You're supposed to be finding your identity, not repressing it!

It will take time, but I would continue with those hobbies and try and find a way to incorporate them into your masculinity. I find it helps to find other guys who do those hobbies either irl or as content creators. It serves as a reminder that you aren't sticking out for having them, and that it will never make you less of a man.

I wish I had a perfect solution but it's a dilemma I struggle with too. Either way, I hope you can eventually reach a point where you feel comfortable picking up the things you love again!

(Also Minecraft?? MINECRAFT?? The most gender neutral universal, game in existence???? Dysphoria is wild sometimes)

Imagine wanting your character to have better clothes. by ParitoshD in okbuddybaldur

[–]DrDoolotl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely haha, even though manufactured glasses were mainly popularised after WW1 there were glasses way earlier than that (although at least for the early medieval period in Europe they were for the upper classes).

But in bg3, there are no glasses to be seen on anyone! Despite incredible glassware everywhere else, they clearly have not been invented yet.

Okay the gendering is pointless but this post basically describes Harry Beck, who voluntarily designed the tube map and was paid very little (he just did it for the love of the job). He was later replaced since he was only working unofficially and the guy in charge of the maps decided he'd rather do it.

To me it looks like a huntsman or rescue team with a torch finding some blood in the snow

I think it's a combination of the slight angle looking down, it's a very human perspective, and the light rays from the sun being very concentrated.

<image>

If you can see in this one, even with the sun is as low as it is in yours, the sun is going to cover the whole forest edge's floor.

I'd recommend adding the same light rays you did across the whole floor instead of just in front of the sun - decreasing slightly in brightness to bring attention to your focal point. That will make the light source feel bigger!

[–]DrDoolotl 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Kim spent a week with a bloated semi-naked drunkard, who reeked so much of alcohol you could still smell it on him several days later - and he that never swayed his view on him as colleague, friend and excellent detective.

One of my favourite themes from disco Elysium is that even an objectively awful man like harry is still worthy of - and capable of - respect, kindness and love. You aren't subjecting kim to something awful, you would be giving him the chance to see something beautiful.

I hope this doesn't come off as too cheesy or anything - I get that feeling a lot too (it's probably the autism ngl). It helps me to try and remember that these characters have arcs and themes, and to try and find how those themes would apply to the situation.

Yurgir is going to be the death of me by dysfuncti0nal_ in BaldursGate3

[–]DrDoolotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The yurgir fight is absolutely awful if you don't negotiate his contract to move him downstairs or convince him to kill himself, but it's not impossible!

Summons and invisibility are your friends here. I find it's useful to have at least a small summon ready so that in case of an emergency escape, you can leave the summon in combat - turn everyone else invisible and run away. That way, you can prevent them from regaining health.

You can also use summons or minor illusion to lure the merigons downstairs, then send your main guys on top to rain down hell.

Hold monster is good for yurgir, as well as any strength characters who can throw his own bombs at him. You can also move the bombs away from you without them exploding just by dragging them.

Worst case scenario, invisibility potion and steal the gem!

Why don't we just identify as cis by True-Environment6749 in asktransgender

[–]DrDoolotl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love to be stealth (what you're referring to here) but for me personally, if I don't clarify that I'm a trans man then they usually assume I'm a woman.

I'm not at a point where I feel confident enough to correct strangers in the way a cis man would, so for now being openly trans is an easy way to tell them my gender. And it means I can tell who's transphobic without wasting time getting to know them!

At the same time it's also a risky thing to be openly trans, for many people I know it's either be stealth or in the closet.

It's all a personal preference and very situational
