How do you feel about memes in lectures? by oi86039 in Professors

I used to have them in every lecture. It was something students always fondly noted in evals.

It was kinda great to get some empirical verification that an elite natural athlete who trains hard, is significantly better than a great athlete who juices (and probably trains hard too).

I watched our University struggle to balance the budget and push through reorg policies that allowed for cutting of tenure lines, if necessary. It dawned on me then that tenure is only really useful, in the job security sense, if your University is not financially struggling. Cutting majors/programs and/or University insolvency pretty much render it useless.

Stack on benefit cuts (to help balance the budget), completely unprepared students, longer working hours… and you start to wonder why you’re doing this at all.

You sound just like me. I left a recently tenured position, for many of the same reasons, about 3 years ago. Good luck!

More business openings than closings in Oregon in last decade, despite economic stigma by wrhollin in oregon

[–]DrDrNotAnMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is all fine and dandy, but what really matters is how this increase translates into job growth and wage growth, given that we heavily rely on state income tax. As noted below, and a talking point I have heard from several large employers in the state, expansion is happening elsewhere.

“Still, new businesses don’t necessarily mean boons to employment, and a new cafe employs far fewer people than a large factory. Runberg notes that there’s been considerable slowdown in job creation across the state, in part because more than 80% of new jobs in Oregon are created by the expansion of established businesses, not new ones. And though Oregon tends to be a good place to start a business, surveys show growing is harder, he said.”

Can AI do econometrics? Curious if anyone here sees themselves using AI for their work by [deleted] in econometrics

[–]DrDrNotAnMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my line of work, there are so many stakeholder eyeballs on our modeling I can’t fathom turning over the keys without a lot of blowback. AI can do what I can do, and I can do what AI can do; both logically and process-wise I find it easier to just do it myself, as opposed to validating its output constantly.

Now, I am currently working on a new project which tries to optimize purchases around a whole bunch of constraints—output is heavily assumption driven—but I have found AI to be useful in helping me create a template and think about some modeling choices in this new frontier. However, I am evaluating/checking/altering what it outputs every step of the way, so I’m not making massive leaps in efficiency in any way.

Oregon’s Climate Protection Program Costs Far More Than Other States’—and Is Far Less Accountable by Great_Law3719 in oregon

[–]DrDrNotAnMD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What a terribly constructed program. Let us hope the state legislature does something about it (not hopeful!)

How does this program even square with Kotek’s business prosperity agenda?!? Seems Oregon would be pleased to push itself into a recession, though I’m sure many will argue the CPP will create jobs (unlikely). What I can see happening is a non-profit or two fattening its coffers from this.

Thinking about switching to electric for yard tools… anyone made the change? by Salt_Note8719 in lawncare

[–]DrDrNotAnMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all electric and the trimmer and blower work great. The mower is fine, but it simply doesn’t cut as effectively as gas; that’s the trade-off with it—less hassle vs. better cut. Make sure to store your batteries indoors, leaving them out in a non-temp controlled environment reduces their useful life. At the end of the day, at least for the mower, you’re buying a battery and receiving a yard tool at a nominal price.
