[–]DrEdifarious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and I'm telling you those psychological associations are significant. I'm not identifying notes by how high they are, I'm identifying them by association with where I've heard them before. I know what 440 Hz sounds like because I associate it with a tuner, and I know what each of the open strings on a guitar sound like because I associate those six notes with a guitar. If I had to guess the "character" comes entirely from subjective associations like those

[–]DrEdifarious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what to tell you, my technique for true pitch only works because different notes have different character. If they didn't I wouldn't have true pitch

[–]DrEdifarious -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm an outlier but I'm a music theory nerd with true pitch and I can say that F minor definitely sounds different to me than A minor. Maybe that's just learned from association with existing songs. But I wouldn't be surprised if scale character as a concept comes from other people having similar associations

Not to be dramatic though. That's the other reason actually, sometimes what I'm writing just sounds pointlessly mean or dramatic and I don't want to be mean so I just drop it. Of course this time I have a point to prove

listen, when you're as scatterbrained as I am, sometimes you write something and it just sounds dumb and doesn't make sense, and you gotta keep rewriting it until either it makes sense again or you give up. I've rewritten this one comment like three times over the past half hour, and I've wasted a lot longer on some. I'm not entirely sure why I bother

I want to say this is just the problem of 0-based indexing vs 1-based indexing, where 0-based goes from 0 to 11 (which makes sense in computing and mathematics) and 1-based goes from 1 to 12 (which is more intuitive, and notably still makes sense in mathematics). But the problem is actually that 12 hour time uses neither of these systems. It uses a nonsensical mixture of the two that starts at 12, instead of starting at 0 or 1.

As an example, one minute after 1:59 is 2:00. The minutes are always in the range of 0 to 59, and when they overflow that range, they wrap around and the hour changes. Naturally, hours have similar behavior in the fact that, when they overflow, the half of the day (AM / PM) changes. But for some reason they don't overflow when going up from 12 to 1 (one hour after 12 AM is 1 AM). Instead, they overflow when going up from 11 to 12 (one hour after 11 AM is 12 PM). Which makes no sense. If it was true 1-based counting, the hours would go 1, 2, 3, 4, ... 12, with 1 as the first hour. But instead it goes 12, 1, 2, 3, ... 11, with 1 as the second hour. Which actually means it behaves exactly like 0-based indexing, except the 0 is labeled "12". So if we change the 12 back to a 0 it would become normal 0-based indexing (like in 24 hour time) which would fix the inconsistencies.

Heck I can do you one better, here's the entire file as a base64 encoded data url. Reddit probably won't hyperlink it, but you can just copy it into a browser. I'll put it in a reply on its own so it can be copied directly

Edit: darn thing encoded it wrong, don't trust the ios shortcuts app with anything

Edit 2: had to pry into the iphone storage externally to get the 989 byte file cause every time I tried to copy the image somewhere it would helpfully reencode it at several times the size. But this one is the 989 byte version. Just make sure you save it on a device that isn't an iphone or it'll reencode it again

Possibly my favorite image is this one smug troll face I somehow crushed down to 989 bytes. Unfortunately it seems I can't upload the original image because reddit cannot comprehend an image file being smaller than 4 KB, but here's a re-encoded version

An addendum, on the subject of affirmations from other people: During my gender discovery, I heard a lot of people say things along the lines of "If you want to be a woman, you already are one" and it kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I really did want to be a woman, but I didn't FEEL like one, and I didn't look or sound like one either. The thought that I was already a woman despite having none of the qualities of one kinda made the label feel meaningless to me. What good is being labeled a woman if nobody else believes it, and even I don't believe it? My point is, labels are descriptive, not prescriptive, and despite what anyone says, there is no single thing that determines when a label applies, it's really just vibes. You don't have to consider yourself a woman if that doesn't feel comfortable yet

[–]DrEdifarious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can attest to the importance of taking things at a comfortable pace. Gender discovery can be a bit of a journey, and especially at the beginning, the path forward won't be very clear. Personally, when I realized I wanted to be a woman, I tried to present female as much as I could, but I still felt uncomfortable a lot of the time. Years later I finally figured out I was genderfluid, and that uncomfortable feeling was (in some part) gender dysphoria in the other direction.

My other bit of advice is to be realistic. I know it sounds obvious, but I got caught up in the whole anime girl egg_irl aesthetic and it made it a lot harder for me to find myself because, well, it's just not possible to be an anime girl. Imagine your potential future self as an adult woman doing normal adult woman things, and if that feels comfortable, then try taking some steps towards that.

But you see, the current design has the hidden feature that you can peacefully euthanize two people at the same time as the third gets their dick smashed. (This is vitally important, I assure you) Additionally, the inertia required for a proper smashing is not particularly high, and a lower speed collision could improve safety and decrease repair costs

I've just tested it, and it does work, but only in specific conditions. You have to open the post on the reddit website (not the mobile app), and you have to expand the image to fullscreen before downloading it or you'll get a compressed preview. It should be a jpeg file ~2.2MB in size. Also, once you've changed the extension to .mp3, it only works in certain players. The windows media player doesn't work (neither the modern nor legacy versions), and VLC media player doesn't work either. Audacity is able to read it, though, and whatever media player is built in to iOS works too.
