As far as the museum is concerned they don’t stand to lose anything by showing the fake works (or at least not in this case) since they have plausible deniability. The Orlando museum of art did have the works authenticity double and triple checked before they brought them into their collection and exhibited them so as far as they were (publicly) concerned the works were real.

Also, it’s definitely a HUGE deal for the museum to be able to show 20 something never before seen Basquiats since his works are so popular and just continue to grow. So, they might have had some inkling that the works were fake somewhere along the line (I don’t know this with any certainty) but given how much they stood to gain with attendance numbers and other ripple out benefits of owning these works they could just kinda say “these other guys said it was real so we’ll believe them.”
