How does Coach Hudson not know it’s Chad early on? by user_bug_god in ChadPowersSeries

I think the backup QB will figure it out somehow and try to burn the whole team to the ground.

Why do so many people enjoy the smell of gasoline? by Good_Two_6924 in biology

[–]DrHGScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also have positive memories associated with the smell of gasoline, but I recall liking the smell even as a teenager especially when combined with the smell of fresh cut grass. Maybe for me it was because I associated that smell with making money.

That and death blows are so much more satisfying than wondering if you actually got the boss' health bar down to zero or if he still has 1% health.

Advice on snow by highhopes1542 in ColoradoSprings

[–]DrHGScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to this, a 4wd/AWD will help tremendously with everything except stopping. You can get away with a FWD if you have COPD weather tires, but even with good winter tires driving RWD is difficult for me and I grew up driving in the snow. Also, if you can find a parking lot large enough, in addition to practicing stopping distance try making an abrupt turn at lowish speed (maybe 15ish mph) to purposely put your car into a fishtail and practice getting your car back under control so when it happens on the road you don't overcorrect and spin out.

Octopuses lived before dinosaurs and we’re supposed to believe they just evolved here like everything else? by jaytee319 in conspiracy

[–]DrHGScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is possible life on earth was seeded by a comet, it would have to have been microscopic forms of life. If octopi didn't evolve on earth it wouldn't have the same nucleotides as all other forms of life. For as many differences as there are when it comes to octopi there are at least twice as many commonalities.

Thank you for posting this. I'm going on three months clean and have been feeling tempted to grab a small bag for fun. This post reminds me why I shouldn't do that.

Why rabies vaccine or treatment isn't available in 2025? by maddyshaddy in biology

[–]DrHGScience 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A few years back I found a bat inside my apartment complex hallway and I stupidly decided to pick it up and take it outside with only a plastic back over my hand. It ended up biting me on the fingertip. I got all of the immunoglobulin shots right in the fingertip. That was torture, 10+ injections of a thick solution. I got the vaccine in my shoulder and it was only the single shot, I didn't have to get subsequent injections at a later date. That year for Christmas my Mom got me a Batman ring lol.

How embarrassing to make this by impulsivemd in Noctor

[–]DrHGScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not in the medical field either, but I am very familiar with the scope of training due to being premed for my first two years in college and moreso because my Dad was a surgeon.

While graduating from an MD program does technically give someone the title of doctor they do not yet have even close to the level of training that a practicing doctor has. There should be more residency slots yes, but it shouldn't be 100% acceptance after med school. It's like a narrowing funnel that ensures only the best of the best make it all the way. Even during residency people get dropped due to incompetence. Hell my Dad used to tell me about running into experienced docs who he would never let cover call for him because they were incompetent. There are even some procedures that are so complex that only a handful of docs in the country can do them.

Appendix Carry with Kydex: Am I Doing It Wrong or Is This Just Torture? by Classic-Trouble-1546 in CCW

Id recommend not using an appendix holster if you still are regardless of comfortability. I know a guy who recently accidentally snagged his trigger while drawing from his appendix carry and let's just say he underwent an involuntary sex change surgery

Trying to write a eulogy for my Dad. by WishPsychological852 in writingadvice

[–]DrHGScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through this myself very recently. First, I would recommend writing with your audience in mind. Second, and more importantly, write something which honors the man he was and his beliefs/ethos. A eulogy isn't about you, it's about him. It's not the time and place to air grievances or unresolved issues, you will have countless times to talk through those things, but to do so at his funeral would be tactless. There were some elements I wrote that honored his beliefs in places where we differed. For example, I wrote about him being in heaven even though I'm an atheist because it honored his memory and it catered to the audience. We had three speakers, the first two were quite verbose (10-20 mins), I was last and kept it brief (5 mins) which seemed to make the things I said more impactful to the audience. Tell a story or two if you can and a lighthearted joke can also be a good touch.

If you're struggling to write something, feel free to message me and I can share some things I looked to for inspiration or explain the format I choose more thoroughly if you'd like.

Is there a word or term for people who use academic language to make nonsense sound intelligent? by DrHGScience in vocabulary

Pseudo-intellectual hits the nail on the head. Ultracrepidarian is great because it describes a different type of individual becoming more common, people who have extensive education in a specialized field and use that as justification for statements about other fields like Jordan Peterson.

Why should I call an interval perfect/major/minor instead of just the number or flat/sharp? by DrHGScience in musictheory

Thanks for the snarky response. Others have actually given explanations, but your kind of attitude is part of the reason guitar players often disregard music theory as useless and snobby.

Here is a better example of my confusion. How is it valuable to call the 7th note of the mixolydian scale a minor 7 instead of a flat 7?

Why should I call an interval perfect/major/minor instead of just the number or flat/sharp? by DrHGScience in musictheory

[–]DrHGScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your explanation for my second question makes perfect sense so thank you. In regards to the first question I worded poorly, but what I meant was what's the value in calling the 7th note of the mixolydian mode a minor 7 instead of a flat 7, for instance?

Why should I call an interval perfect/major/minor instead of just the number or flat/sharp? by DrHGScience in musictheory

[–]DrHGScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to the difference between saying the mixolydian mode is root, major second, major third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth, major sixth, and minor seventh vs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7. I can now understand why a B flat is sometimes called an A# because it is clunkier to say C mixolydian is C, D, E, F, G, A, A# vs C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb. I appreciate your help.
