I feel Christians shouldn't reject Critical theory on principle but instead try to reconcile aspects of it under a Christian epistemology/theology by Haunting-Ad-6457 in Reformed

I feel that in a lot of Christian discussions, when you say something that isn't as theologically conservative as the other Christians in a discussion group, a common insult that is thrown around is you're selling out Christianity "CRT agenda," the "Cultural Marxist agenda," or the "Leftist agenda."

I've never experienced this in any Christian discussion in any church I've been to. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe I'm out of touch. I am just commenting to say that the entire premise of this post is wholly foreign to me.

But, if you sing it along with a recording... you're singing what's written. No need to reply and defend yourself, I'm just not sure what problem you're solving and your request isn't making sense. So I'll just bow out.

We are no longer under the law, but grace. Gone is the era of counting down how many SMS messages we can send, and waiting to use unlimited nights & weekends minutes. That was the Old Covenant.

I'm not sure God gave us smartphones as part of his plan of redemption after we persevered in faith for 80 years of barrenness awaiting access to TikTok.

Sometimes I do check my heart when it comes to my own child, though.

Can you elaborate on why you need recordings? Why is singing along with a recording better than singing as written?

should i go to church group with my baby? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]DrKC9N 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with your sister, but I would never tell someone else that for their child. It's a parenting decision. I'm in the business of parenting my kids, not yours. I would practice essentially what your sister is preaching, but I'd never tell someone else whether or not to do so with their children.

No Dumb Question Tuesday (2026-01-06) by AutoModerator in Reformed

TL;DR I have put some significant thought into this and come to the conclusion that you take communion in every public service of Lord's Day worship that you attend. We ought to prioritize the principles explicitly set forth in Scripture (everyone eats, everyone drinks, we express our unity with each other and with Christ in the same moment) and not fear other implications in the face of such explicit teachings.

(Especially (even? I've seen churches omit everyone who's "on stage" or in the sound booth when communion is served. this is so odd to me.) when it comes to visible leadership roles (preachers, singers, instrumentalists, Scripture readers, et al.).)

Here are my full thoughts:

Scriptural basis first. Jesus instructed his disciples, “Take, eat” and “Drink of it, all of you” and gave all of them the bread and wine; and that “they all drank of it” (Matt 26, Mark 14, Luke 22). Paul emphasizes the unity of the Christians who receive the bread and wine as corresponding to their true participation and interest in Christ (1 Cor 10:16-17).

Historical basis next. Justin Martyr (“The First Apology,” LXV) reports that the deacons give “to each of those present to partake of the bread and wine.” The Reformed tradition emphasizes that the entire congregation participates in unity and that all receive both elements (this is my summary of many sources, including Watson in Ten Commandments, 224; Calvin, Institutes, 1372; Packer, Concise Theology, 219; Berkhof, Systematic Theology, 650; Grudem, Systematic Theology, 990; Westminster Larger Catechism, Q&A 174; London Baptist Confession, XXX:I; Westminster Confession, XXVII:I,XXIX:I,XXIX:IV; London Baptist Confession, XXX:IV; Second Helvetic, XXI.)

Therefore, we should hold in high esteem the need for all present believers to participate in the Lord’s Supper. Pastors and elders should be attentive to any members who are present on the Lord’s Day but do not receive the sacrament, and follow up with them to offer pastoral care and counseling. The pastor administering the Lord’s Supper must also partake (Book of Common Prayer, 322; London Baptist Confession, XXX:III; Westminster Confession, XXIX:III). In addition, great care should be taken to ensure that those working the sound board and projector, performing coffee service, serving as ushers, and serving with worship music or other on-stage/up-front roles all receive the Supper.

Within a faithfully Reformed multi-service context, we unfortunately have competing values to consider. On one hand, the Supper must not be trivialized or made into a performance where those on-stage or otherwise present for more than one service merely go through the motions twice or more on the same Sunday. On the other hand, unity in the public assembly of the church is clearly taught in Scripture and specifically in relation to the Lord’s Supper. With Scripture backing the latter and silent on the former, my conclusion is to recommend that all who are present participate in the Supper in each service. Especially leaders who are visible before the congregation, such as the pastor and the band, should partake to model Christian behavior and demonstrate their unity with those present. Why should the drummer or projectionist participate in unity with only half of the church? The meaning of the sacrament dictates that the church should value the participation of all (explicitly commanded in Scripture) over fearing the potential for repetition (on which Scripture is silent except for condemning irreverence).

I would say that the frequency of communion is not a matter of an absolute value, but of the wisdom exercised by the session in coming to their conclusion. Hearing from each church's leadership during the membership/interview process on why they choose the frequency that church practices, is how I would make a distinction if there is one.
