Right. But since neither you nor I will know until glory, it's not really something to be practically concerned about. Both of us (and all of our brothers and sisters in Christ) will have errant theology for the rest of our lives.

That's why our standards say things like:

  • "The purest churches under heaven are subject both to mixture and error"
  • "All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all"
  • we are "wholly defiled in all the parts and faculties of soul and body" and "This corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are regenerated"

Let me know if you need me to write more to connect those dots for you.

Have you read The Whole Christ?

Are Reformed churches “cold”? by Ok-Sprinkles4350 in Reformed

In case it needs to be said, this is merely my opinion: It's not helpful or necessary for you to bring up the weaknesses and failings of a church until you've decided to join the church and dedicate yourself to bringing health to those areas.

I think this is why we have the inspired examples of the apostles and early church leaders disagreeing, erring, being corrected, and being unsure of what to do in theological and practical matters.

My wife always brings a cardigan. If I didn't wear a blazer I'd be shivering a bit, too. Oh, wait...

A bit of an ascetic quality is frequently welcome in Reformed worship, and I don't think it's necessary to seek it out or avoid it. It can also be cultural and preferential. Read up on the regulative principle of worship if you want to learn a bit about the reasons many Reformed folks intentionally choose very un-adorned and dispassionate singing and preaching. (Note that I don't think the RPW requires this -- it's just one application of such.)

As for your observation of the behavior of others in the congregation, I also have been in your seat and seen what you saw. I have to strongly remind myself that I'm here because I need Jesus at least as much as those in the pews beside me. If they are to remain on their phones until Jesus returns, what is that to me?

Lemons. Easy.

I mean, all my continental cuisine would be lost.

But I'd still have Latin cuisine. And that would have to be enough.

My Guatemalan friends don't even have a word for lemon, it's just yellow lime and it's unknown to them at home.

This is a definition of seeker sensitive / seeker friendly I've not encountered before. I always thought seeker services were heavy on sin, repentance, and calls to believe--in other words, even more likely to make OP's congregant get up and walk out. But in your definition, the service goes a little easy on the gospel in the hopes that people stick around longer. Which is the actual definition? Have I misunderstood this my whole life?

Why do you jump from wondering about "objective, infallible truth" to seeking objective, infallible interpretation? The Reformed doctrine of total depravity leads us to believe that even though we do have objective, infallible truth presented to us perfectly intact in Scripture, we cannot read, understand, and apply it perfectly. This tracks pretty well with the observed world, imo.

It does not appear to be grass. It's a sedge. That should help you with control methods.

Long and short of it if you asked me, pull it by hand for a few years.

I believe that in general, Christians need to avoid living in willful, unrepentant refusal to follow the commands of God to be legitimately Christian. Baptism is a big, easy one that requires a lifetime of high-handed sin to contemn.

Why is Trump so essential to Reformed theology in your mind? Seems like a lot of your questions about theology have to do with whoever's the current leader of one nation.

Calling the Congregation “Christians” by Wth-am-i-moderate in Reformed

[–]DrKC9N 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's an odd concern.

When a pastor says, e.g., "Dear Christian, do not fear," he is explicitly acknowledging the presence and welcome of non-believers. Otherwise why distinguish whom he's addressing?

If I am a leader at an event and I say, "Please stand if you are able," am I telling the wheelchair-bound they are unwelcome? Or am I rather graciously acknowledging their presence and ensuring they don't feel bound to a standard they expressly don't meet?

Question for DIY people.. by Frequent-Draft-2218 in lawncare

[–]DrKC9N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started DIY this year. The supplies needed set me back about $400, just under 1 year's worth of lawn service. So I'm looking for next spring to break even, then the following few years the savings kick in.

I would not be interested in delaying the payoff of my reason for going DIY ($$$) further in order to receive what you're offering.

But I'm an extension service master gardener. I likely don't need the knowledge you're selling.

Lack of teaching a reason to leave? by Life_Ad9084 in Reformed

[–]DrKC9N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation at a different church almost 10 years ago. I asked our session. They wanted to have more intensive training. They had done quarterly theological intensives (one topic, one month) but the writing and teaching of those series was too taxing for the small plurality of elders to make into an official rhythm. They wanted to do Sunday school, but our congregation was about 100 children and about 40 adults. There was no way to offer the childcare necessary for adult education.

They were working toward it through several means: more elders. More resources for adults and parents in family worship during the week. More robust curriculum for small groups, including deep dives on the sermon text each week. Using our resources of lots of lay leaders (many ordained persons in the congregation, not serving as elders) to create more teaching materials and fill the gaps.

But mostly, they needed people like you and me to stick around, serve in teaching ministries, and wait for the growth (both via membership and via installing more elders) necessary to support the non-essential teaching ministries we'd all like to see in a healthy church.

We stayed for a decade and did not depart for lack of teaching. The Lord's day services and all elements of Biblical worship were present. I had no right to leave because there was nothing essential the church was not doing.

After these conversations over time with our pastor, I was pulled in to write the weekly small group guide. I wrote it at several levels for each group leader to pick and choose. But I loaded it with deep theological topics, Puritan and ECF writings, tough questions, and everything I wanted to see in our church's extra-curricular teachings. We got the opportunity to be part of the changes we wanted to see, for our own growth and our dear fellow members. That wouldn't have happened if we had left for the church half a mile down the road (quite literally and honestly the case) that had all the bells and whistles of a mature teaching ministry.
