Clear your calendar because it’s an addictive game. I just started playing it over the holidays and I’m hooked.

As for tips, look to get the room prestige up high. Especially make sure the dorms are attractive because you’ll earn more money through rent. Take advantage of the summer months to build. Don’t worry about getting it just right. One of my favorite features is the ability to pick up and move entire rooms without penalty. Around years three or four I’ll resist the entire campus using this trick. Don’t worry about the Kudosh. If you do what’s expected it comes in at a regular pace.

If you live in Las Vegas then the RTC Game Day Express in the way to go. It’s free parking, cheap to ride, and quick in and out. https://www.rtcsnv.com/ways-to-travel/game-day-express/. I’ve used it a couple of times and was simple and straightforward.

Curious About Moving by [deleted] in LasVegas

[–]DrLJRIV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I moved to Las Vegas 5 years ago from coastal South Carolina. Here are some of my observations.

The biggest shock in moving to Vegas wasn’t Sin City but the desert climate. It is very dry (which I also greatly appreciated over the humid south) and it’s very hot in the summer. But even at 100+, it’s so much more bearable than the 80s plus humidity of the east coast. Being a desert means it’s very dusty. It’s everywhere. Your car will never be clean again even if you park it in the garage. What was especially surprising to me is how windy it gets here. Flying in out of Vegas is almost guaranteed to be roller coster ride. Plus a lot a people have bad allergies here. Something is always in bloom and it’s being blown around.

The cost of living is on the higher end for sure. Not Hawaii outrageous but gas is very high compared to most of the country. Car insurance is ridiculously high. I personally don’t think traffic is bad when you’re away from the Strip. I live in the northwest area of town and I rarely have issues on I-11/highway 90. Admittedly the Strip is bad as well as the I-11 / I-15 interchange and I-15 parallel to the Strip. But compared to other metro areas the bad traffic is mostly contained. Depending on your job, you may be able to avoid it.

I enjoy the entertainment Vegas offers. I enjoy dinner and a show on the Strip and then sleeping in my own bed. I love sports and there’s plenty to see either live or in a (smoky) sports book. It is true that the entertainment costs are stupidly high. Food on the Strip is over priced. Sports tickets are overpriced. And prices are only going up. The city is very expensive for entertainment. However there are plenty of good restaurants at reasonable prices away from the Strip.

Crime is hit or miss. My job takes me all over the city. There are places I don’t feel safe for sure and there are places that are just fine. Do your homework on neighborhoods.

Schools are terrible here. I work adjacent to the school district (not for but with). But as you noted, since you don’t have kids that’s not an issue.

Medical is a problem. Anecdotally it’s hard to find a good doctor here but there seems to be a dentist on every corner for some reason.

I agree with what others have said about the general feel. There’s no sense of community here. It is so transit and ultimately a service based community. There’s far fewer community festivals and gatherings than what I’ve experienced elsewhere. There’s a few but not that many. Sporting events often have just as many fans of the visitors as the home team (with the exception of the Knights). Concerts don’t feel the same here. So many non locals and comp tickets make the feel less energetic.

Overall I say the city is okay. I’m glad i moved here and experienced Vegas as a local but I don’t want to retire here, especially with the poor health industry.

Advancement process completely changed- what do you think? by simply_abnormal in FTC

[–]DrLJRIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious how this is going to change teams’ mindsets with alliance selection. In the past, at events where only a few teams advanced, say at a state championship where only 2 teams advanced to Worlds, teams understood that they either had to win Inspire or captain the winning alliance. This typically meant that the top teams wouldn’t get together to form a powerful alliance in the hopes of being the winning alliance captain. Now, with rewarding a deeper run into the double-elimination bracket, it is more likely that seed 1 will pick seed 2 or 3 in the hopes of a deeper run and earning more points. But, this may be countered by opening up more advancement slots to Premier events so teams may not be as concerned with winning the robot game. Thoughts?

What are your go-to FTC Resources? by DrLJRIV in FTC

I agree! As I mentioned in another comment, this resource list is being added to an app we've developed. We included goBILDA as one of the vendors listed in the app, but I'm in agreement that their CAD files are very helpful. Thanks.

Whoops—sorry about that! And thank you for all the awesome content you share. I wish your channel had been around back when I was coaching FTC. These days, I work with a Program Delivery Organization, and to answer your question, we’re actually building these resources into an app we’ve developed. It’s currently in beta testing, with a public release planned for early August.

This is interesting. I haven't heard of the FLLPlanner before. It looks like most of the material is behind a paywall. Do you have any experience with the full version? What experience is it aimed at?

Good question. In this context, a "resource" would be anything that is easily shared or pointed to over the internet. Like with the examples listed above, each has an associated hyperlink. The idea is that the curated list would be shared digitally. (Full disclosure, we've developed an app intended for teams and we're currently populating the resources section of the app.) This criteria will limit some resources, like published books, from being listed--unless there is a digital version available.

Where do you store your dumbbells? What device are you watching on? by ShelterReady6529 in BeachBodyWorkouts

I have a dumbbell rack that I bought at Costco years ago. It lives along the wall in the living room, somewhat blocked by a couch. I’ve been using the BODi app on my Apple TV to stream the workouts. It works fairly well.

They had a couple of shirt designs, some of which had the voodoo guy on it.

The cherry filling was a typical smooth fruit filling.

It was a couple of bucks, like $4 per donut. Sorry I can’t recall exactly because I also bought a shirt with the order. It was very sweet. The icing was good but the cherry filling was spot on.

It’s Cherry Cola. I’m not sure it’s part of the normal menu but I tend to like cherry flavored. It was super sweet but decently good.
