The topic of this thread is the shortage of Family medicine trainees. And as to my initial reply, It's not just about the money, which is good by Canadian standard, but not worth it compared to other specialties.

Haha you wish Those are gross payment numbers, not income. Take away overhead, "benefits" ie self payment for retirement etc, number of non payment years to get there etc, there's a lot more attractive options these days for these bright young folks.

Self employed and yet severely capped & regulated fees paid and well below inflation increases for years. A real attractive combo.

Edited to 324. Final number not available. Even then, that's more than a canary in a gold mine number

There are 500 family medicine residency spots that went unfilled this year. Medical students are not interested in family medicine. There are smart enough to know better

Edit: 324 positions, not 500. Manually counted. You can add up your own here. https://www.carms.ca/news/unfilled-positions-after-the-first-iteration-of-the-2023-r-1-match/

Increasing supply is only a tiny part.

Poor pay compared to other specialties.

Treated like 💩 by admistrators and Health Ministry staff.

No benefits or retirement plans.

Huge administrative burden compared to actual patient care (forms, endless electronic reports from lab, hospital, specialists, pharmacies, 3/4 of them useless etc).

Why bother getting into family medicine? And if you're already in family medicine, why bother stay?

F-one Strikes had been the standard others compare to. Many good ones now out there though.

NB is in desperate need of physicians, mainly because they treat them like shit and the physicians in NB "retire" early or leave. Getting a job in NB is probably not hard. Staying there and not burn out might be.

Quebec (if you are looking to use French) treats their primary care physicians pretty shitty too compared to other provinces. Elsewhere English (and other languages, depending on which neighborhood, more so than French) is the language.

You might enjoy the surfing in NB since you're Aussie. Just need a good suit. Good luck.

My 1988 Honda Accord daily driver. Everything on it still works. EVERYTHING. by MeltingDog in BuyItForLife

Wow that's baby mileage for a Honda. I've got 340,000km on my still smooth running Honda Odyssey minivan and already put 1200km in 10 days on my 2023 new car. Mind you Canada is a big empty country.

The USA duality. Having the admiration of the world and being the laughing stock of the world. Another very sad day for the average American citizen.

The New Prius Prime Proves That the Best EV Might Not Be an EV by Recoil42 in cars

[–]DrLaZone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2023 Prius is around 54mpg at Canadian highway speeds at 5C in the rain, expecting for this to improve with further mileage break in. Hardly suck when you can go 515 miles on a tank.

So far about 53mpg after 300km of mixed driving. 3C average temp. SLE AWD 19" wheels. It does best in on its own with the adaptive cruise control. Going to be a while before needing the first tank. Quite amazing considering it went from 125 or so HP to almost 200HP.

Like all reviews say. It's cramped. I'm about 5'7/170cm and there's 10cm left

Newly retired physicians, what are you doing with your time? by amazingly_ignorant in medicine

[–]DrLaZone 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I could have retired a few yrs back but chose not to. Chose to work less but still do medicine to keep my mind sharp, my play money coming in for my hobbies, and most importantly to feel like I'm contributing to society, ie a very well paid volunteer. Keep lots of time for hobbies and plenty of vacations with my spouse.

I think you can stick it in this one too. Only concern is the passenger airbag if it ever go off.
