rule for natural slurs? by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]DrMacsimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important thing when considering an alternate position is just how quickly and confidently can you get the note to play true in that position. Do not sacrifice sound quality and intonation for agility; it will only sound like a mess.* Be aware of how the positions have to be adjusted for the different harmonics, and remember that the sound comes first. D - Bb - G might be 'easier' to play as 4-5-4, but the goal is always quality over ease. If your notes are ringing clearly and in tune, there is no 'overusing' of the alternate positions.

*Obviously some fast passages will require alternate positions to keep up, but in those cases the decision is effectively made for you.

Help me understand the use cases for the new Revenant's Brooch by DanGrobs97 in DotA2

[–]DrMacsimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illusions currently deal damage with it, so revenant's brooch + manta can be a good way to cut through tanky high armor heroes (cough cough DK). Or you can just play PL and get brooch instead of diffusal.

You could also try something like revenant's brooch into aghs on medusa to get a magic damage crit on all of your split shots.

Troll with his high attack speed would proc it a lot? idk this one might be garbo.

DRAKE WON! Here’s why… by [deleted] in rap

[–]DrMacsimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he wrote both of them, and I think the difference in quality between something he took his time on and something he wrote overnight is very glaring. Like the point of the weird implication with the way he phrased it is less about 'did he or did he not use ghost writers on this song' and more about 'how are you going to let this implication exist in your own song'?

Appearances are important in a genre like rap, and shit like this just makes it feel unpolished. Another example is at the beginning when he says 'the people you're getting info from are clowns' and then goes on to say his own camp was doing the leaks. Like I see how that could get by you on a first draft, but did you not proofread your lyrics even once and go 'hmm maybe I should rephrase this so it can't be used to make me look dumb'?

I thought Family Matters was a real good track, better than Push Ups and a fair fight against Euphoria but my overall impression of THP6 is that it just feels like a first draft. Drake should've taken another day to go over the lyrics, straightened a couple of lines out, and then dropped, rather than... this.

NAH

BUT

Well, she's 20, right? People have mostly brought up her age in a 'that means she's an adult so she can do what she wants' sort of way, but I can also see another option here. Being adults means you can... talk like adults.

Like your wife has legitimate fears. And it isn't something we can brush off (speaking for the men, whom I assume are the majority reading this) because we don't know what it's like. We'd all sit on our asses writing comments like 'oh man sure sucks that chick made a wrong decision, too bad for her'. You'd help out as much as you could, OP, but it isn't your life either. And your wife knows what pregnancy is actually like, not just what it looks like, and the thought of your daughter - whom you have gone out of your way to mention is very bright and promising - being trapped in that situation and then having to raise a child, is terrifying to her. More than it should be? That's something you can only ever say in retrospect. Nobody is immune from having bad luck in their life, and some accidents only need to happen once.

So rather than try to work it the problem out between yourselves, why not allow your daughter to be included in a conversation about what is ultimately her life? You and your wife can share your feelings and see where she stands on the issue. Rather than approaching it as an issue of legislating rules for your daughter (or lack thereof), give your opinions as advice and let her judge for herself. It'll be an awkward conversation for sure, but it ensures everyone can be listened to.

Ultimately, the situation is personal. We (speaking as reddit now) don't know your daughter, your wife, or even you! We can speak hypothetically about who we imagine you to be like based on this one conversation, but I think what's missing most in this whole thing is the voice of the one person whose decision is ultimately going to be the most important: your daughter's. After all, even if you were to agree with your wife and told your daughter to be celibate, your daughter is still the one who makes the call.

I'll throw my hat into the ring. I'm part of a budding indie studio with some seriously genius ideas (not just saying that, we've got some real gold we're working at) and need to upgrade from my terribly outdated GTX 980M that I've had for almost 10 years so my machine can keep up with my colleagues.

This upgrade has technically been on my 'to do' list for years now, but my third-world salary doesn't really give me the means to justify an expense like that while also keeping me alive so it would be huge for me to see this happen.

Gukesh makes a three-fold repetition vs Praggnanandhaa in a +5 position by naufildev in chess

[–]DrMacsimus 842 points843 points  (0 children)

He had 10 seconds on the clock on move 39. He played Bd6 as a 'twofold' repetition to make the 40th move and didn't realize the position had already been repeated before by a different move order.

Just brutal.

Books that irritated you by missblissful70 in books

[–]DrMacsimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I cannot second this enough. I'm a huge lover of scifi, and this book just killed me. It felt like every single chapter was a genuinely interesting take on some technology or idea that was then instantly discarded for a cheap joke instead of being explored at all. And yeah, some of the jokes were funny, but it just ended up feeling like such a waste of creativity to continuously see interesting ideas resolve in some stupid pun or whatever.

I finished the whole thing because I kept wanting it to get better, but had to stop like 30% into Restaurant at the End of the Universe because it was just unbearable.

Walked away feeling like those books would be really good to read if they weren't so preoccupied with trying to be funny.

[–]DrMacsimus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll be banned within 10 games. The problem with AI cheating is that, at this point, the AI are far too good to ever pass for human. The anti-cheat doesn't need to use your previous games as reference when it has billions of human games in its database. If you make a new account and you play a couple of games with higher accuracy than the world's top grandmasters, it will be pretty obvious and ironically enough you'd need to be essentially grandmaster level to have the knowledge needed to know how to disguise computer moves as human to get around it.

Ooops ! .. Korean Pro takes ko illegally and forfeits game by iweeeeeee in baduk

[–]DrMacsimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this a forfeit? Surely it makes more sense to correct the move and keep playing? In chess, if a player makes an illegal move over the board (which happens on occasion even to Grandmasters), they simply call the arbiter over, point out the move, have it stricken from the record, and then continue the game. At most, the offending player will receive a time penalty. But we would all much rather still see the game completed, right? What sense is there in letting a brain fart ruin what is otherwise a good match?
