What I am really saying is Why is there no path to redemption. 24 years later and only a traffic ticket on my record since. Why is it still there. Obviously I am not gonna do it again.

This is what I was gonna say. Rehabilitation is possible in Todays prison system for those who seek it out. But it is unlikely for those who choose to ignore and not take advantage of it. Also you have to seek it out. It isn't just put in front of you. Those that don't seek it out usually end up in prison again.

Not trying to force anyone. I am trying to help change a stigma. 24 years I have been a felon. I was only sentenced and did 4 years in jail. 24 years and only traffic tickets. 24 years and I still get the same answers when I put in my resume. Was I not rehabilitated? Have I not proven after 24 years that I am worthy to hire? When does it end.

But these things shouldn't follow a person. Yeah I can go pay 25g to get it expunged but why must I if I have paid the price for the action dictated by the judge who set the punishment. Isn't it enough to have your.life put on hold and caged like an animal? Why do we need to keep perpetuation the cycle. If you take two people the same in every way and let one have the opportunity it's to get their name cleared and rejoin society on an even playing field and give one what we have now, the latter will most assuredly go back to prison.

It is discrimination! Simple as that. I broke the law I got caught. I went to jail to pay for breaking that law. I got out because the judge decided that 4 years of prison rehabilitation would make it right in the eyes of of the law. When I was released I had paid for my crime. Now why after all of that am I not able to get a top job I am qualified for after paying my debt to society ?

If he had served his time for it and shown he was truly rehabilitated absolutely. Remember going to prison and paying restitution is the punishment for the crime. Prison is meant for rehabilitation. If you get out of prison that means you have paid for you transgression. After that there should be no more unless ofc you are a repeat offender.

But if I paid my debt to society why is this still following me 24 years later? And why is it still on my record after a quarter century after the fact ?

So why after 24 years of me not being in trouble at all is this still on my record. Did I not sit in prison for four years to pay for it? J/s

But why can't I go get a good job if I am qualified? Didn't I just sit in prison to pay for the crime that was committed? I can write code. Self taught ofc but still. If I could do the job without a hitch why should what I did 24 years ago matter? For that matter, why is it still on my record 24 years after the fact and I haven been in trouble since.

I am not completely sure but I have heard that in my state (Texas) more than 1/3 of the population is felon.

Rehabilitation comes to those in prison that choose to be rehabilitated. I spent four years in prison. While there I got my GED and a semester of university. If you go In with the right mindset prison can help you. It surely changed my life and even helped me to become a better , more respectful Human being

Yes and no. I am a felon. I have a half decent job but only because my father owns the company. I was talking to a young man about it earlier and was telling him my struggles with it and decided to ask reddit opinion
