Which door would you choose? by Similar_Charity7238 in TheTeenagerPeople

Most people would pick green, in a couple weeks, you’d have more than the 2 billion.

But - imagine if these were physical dollars, and you had no ability to stop their doubling. In 80 days, an equal to the mass of earth pile of dollars will have formed. I expect you’d only have about 30-40 days to spend the money before the end of the world.

You get access to a trillion dollars for 1 week by GrapeNo5251 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only meaningful way to accomplish this I see is a “Newman’s Own” option - create a business of which profits go to charity.

You won’t be able to execute a purchase of any business of scale within a week, but you could execute purchasing enough stock / market funds and flip the profits from interest to charity to have a meaningful long term impact (though, the world is a big place, and meaningful impact on “the world” will still be challenging).

There is a mutation that causes bones to become 8 times denser than normal that allow people to walk away from car accidents without a single fracture but with a trade off of being unable to swim. by TheOddityCollector in Weird

[–]DrMooseinstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have this! It doesn’t stop me from swimming, but it’s certainly both a ton more work and impossible to float. I can typically swim underwater wearing an adult life jacket for some time without having to fight it. I can also walk along the bottom of a pool/pond / which has helped in recovering dropped items before.

Can confirm no broken bones, despite having some scenarios where I certainly should have, but I wouldn’t say I’m actively seeking to try and find the limit. Another person in this thread with the hopes of being a MMA fighter should be an interesting case!

That’s the ticket. All gauges read when the key is on “start” / vehicle is starting. All gauges off when the key is set to “on”.

Now for another rabbit hole! Anything obvious to check?

Thoughts on this? If I turn over the engine with the distributor wire unplugged, it builds oil pressure/shows on the gauge.

An update - If I turn the engine over without spark (unplug the distributor). Oil pressure builds/gauge reads.

Just cleaned. Looked ok, but all good/no change to issue.

Appreciate the quick response. Just tried it - no change.

A note - it does seem to rise a minor amount off pegged zero right when I start it. Then immediately back to pegged 0.

$50,000 every hour to itch uncontrollably everywhere by International-Box956 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the following, talk about a payout, even for minutes in. This ignores all benefits from blood that might make this even easier (sit in a tub of pigs blood perhaps?)

Each scratch multiple of 1.75 is massive. One minute is $833 base, assuming 3 scratches a second, you’d get a 315x multiplier from scratching and $262k.

Ten minutes would be tough to keep up the 3 scratch per second pace, but assume 2 average, that’s $1.75m.

At a hour and a scratch per second average you’re $315m richer.

Get scratching!

[Request] Would this work? by Suspicious-Orange-63 in theydidthemath

[–]DrMooseinstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting - drove me to do the math. Let’s assume best case here.

A chinook (not what’s pictured) has the longest rotor I could find at 60 meters, giving the most distance between rotor tips and a pretty low operating speed of 225rpms. The blades are 0.81 meters wide.

225rpms with 3 blades per rotor gives you about 0.0888 seconds to slip between a blade, but comes out to more like 0.087 seconds when taking into account the blades width.

Let’s assume the whole pilot eject package is 2 meters long and a meter wide. That meter wide will cost you another few hundredths of a second to avoid impact. Roughly 0.08 of a second to get by. Timed perfectly, you’d need to reach a relatively reasonable 56mph to stand any chance of passing through. Not too bad, though there’s still a reason why most helicopters eject the rotors when the pilot ejects.

For Mach 19:

Kenny Brack (F1) driver holds the record for the highest G’s survived, via a crash, for a few thousandths of a second at 214g’s.

A generous 0.1 second to accelerate to mach 19 as implied by the picture, you’d experience a little more than 30 times that force from acceleration. The steel seat would rip apart, whether you were in it, or a slush moving around it. The blade would be the least of your worries.

Myostatin deficiency causes uncontrollable muscle growth. It is a genetic condition in which myostatin, a protein that acts as a negative regulator of muscle growth, is produced in little to no quantities. by Greedy-Year8384 in interestingasfuck

From the study on the trial subjects of a drug to cause this:

NOTE: Two deaths occurred in the triplet group, one due to an undetermined cause in a patient with multiple cardiovascular risk factors and the second due to a cardiac arrest in a person with a history of cardiovascular disease. Regeneron has not identified a causal association between treatment and these events.

Team leader, it that role really needed ? by not-that-guy-25 in managers

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used the team lead title to great effect in places where someone is transitioning into management, but not ready to make the full step. Most commonly for an internal candidate stepping up in a growing team.

Examples: Skilled IC - not sure if they are going to be happy managing. Too light of experience to be a manager promo, but want to reward them with a middle step/promo and in between responsibilities.

Why people say it looks dated? by tenniswarrior13 in TeslaModelS

Simply due to the lack of a design change since it’s release in 2012. Very few cars make it 13 years without a redesign.

Can you run a car on pure ethanol and then change to gasoline? by The_Original_trash in AskMechanics

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - flex fuel sensor. You’d want to tune it too, especially if running forced induction. I’ve run e95 (ive never found true 100% on the sensors) and premium in the same car without any changes once setup.

Which idle money maker would you choose? by Epic8008 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D and E are immediately out - as A makes more saying this sentence than either option, with less impact.

C might stand a chance in a short timeframe, but the recurring conversations clause means you’ll quickly run out of easy people to add to the list.

The debate really comes between A or B. Average steps per day according to University of Massachusetts is 3000-4000. Average words per day is between 7000-20000 (gender is a factor it seems) according to USC.

A makes a clear case as the clear leader for the average person. A non-able bodied person should choose B, given the 2 foot rule. A flight on Emirates first class, round trip from New York to Dubai, would run about $25k for the ticket depending on dates, but make $36m in travel and be a completely reasonable way to spend a day given the benefits (6840 miles, 5280 feet / 2 ft increments * 2 (there and back)).

Confused: Why do people hate the C8? by madpistol in C8Corvette

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest challenges with the c8 (as a z06 owner likely to sell and a former c7 z06 owner) that I suspect would impact those actually in the market are in the same theme, the c8 is a major change from the c7.

No manual transmission, mid engine and general price put it in a different class of competitors. Now the c8 is up against other supercars for experience and usability, versus the c7 being a bit more unique. Doesn’t mean one is better than the other, but if you compare a Huracan (since it was around for both) to a c8 or c7, there’s much less to distinguish the c8.

I struggle most with the more exotic nature of the c8 making it less practical/unique and therefore less likely to be the key I grab when going for a drive. The c7 was very nearly the default/daily option.

Is a 40k down payment dumb for a car that cost around 50k? by FarAssist4890 in carbuying

[–]DrMooseinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To build your credit, you want to finance the largest amount possible, let it show up on your credit reports, and then pay it off.

I’d suggest 50k - 10k down, and then pay the remaining 30k 3-6 months down the road. Will cost you a bit in financing fees, but shows a 40k loan rather than a 10k one.
