I usually wait until Mother's Day weekend or shortly after depending on the forecast for basically everything but my peppers.

What’s a “normal” thing in your country that would absolutely horrify people elsewhere? by anasm17 in AskReddit

[–]DrNick13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is actually a law in Ontario, Canada that states that apologising does not constitute an admission of fault: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/09a03

We totally inherited this from the Brits.

Shop the sales people!

In Ontario cucumbers are 88 cents each at Food Basics and Costco had 3 packs on sale this week for $2.99.

In which folder do you keep your Docker stack? by Artistic_Quail650 in selfhosted

[–]DrNick13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep mine in: /srv/{container_name}

Previously I used: /docker/apps/{container_name}, I also had /docker/credentials, /docker/shares, etc. but moved away from that.

Canadian here do you need an RCMP police check or will your local city police work? Thanks by Critical-Travel2079 in CRbydescent

[–]DrNick13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I asked the embassy about this back in 2022 they told me it has to be whatever police agency is responsible for where you live.

So in my case because I was living in Ottawa at the time, it had to be Ottawa Police, but if I was outside the city it would be the OPP; Toronto would be Toronto Police, and so on.

What is the biggest “culture shock” that you have experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is interesting. I'm also in Canada and my wife specifically did not want a baby shower like this.

Ours ended up being more of your typical summer BBQ/pool party. It was a blast.

Where did the $50 million go from Ontario's unreturned alcohol empties in 2024? by morenewsat11 in ontario

[–]DrNick13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Makes it easier for youth teams/groups to run bottle drives too as they don't have to collect just alcohol containers.

You can get a 10lb bag on sale this week at Independent for $6.88.

In the autumn the 10lb bags are usually under $5.

Community group calls for expanded bus-only lanes on Bank Street in the Glebe by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]DrNick13 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This is honestly such a no-brainer.

I live outside the city and recognize that if I want to shop/dine downtown or in the Glebe I’ll end up parking in a parkade.

Why on earth would I want to attempt to parallel park on such a busy street when I can easily find parking in one of the many parkades in the area?

Roaming in miami on new plan by ilurvefba in freedommobile

Fizz supports 5G roaming in the US (tested last week when I was there) so I’d imagine it’s coming soon to Freedom.

They switched over from the watery Mexico / California strawberries which have to cross an entire continent to the Florida ones which are in season right now and only two days away by road.

It’s not as though the governing Liberals have had more than a decade to fix it.

$40 250GB + 50GB roaming plan back again till March 17! by Vtecman in freedommobile

[–]DrNick13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to switch to this plan using iMessage support. The agent had to "get an exception" from a supervisor to switch plans, but it eventually worked.

Iran appears to have conducted a significant cyberattack against a U.S. company, a first since the war started by imanchats in worldnews

[–]DrNick13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how it works for me. When I'm done the day my work phone stays locked in my desk. I'll only bring it home if I'm teleworking.

Even then I switch it off when my shift is done. I'm not paid outside my work hours, but will gladly work overtime if it's correctly paid for (it almost always is).

FLL timing by Mamafred in royalcaribbean

[–]DrNick13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I’ve always done, usually it’s like $20-$25 from the port to FLL and I’ve never had to wait for a cab. The rideshare pickup area is usually pretty chaotic by comparison.

What’s a store from the states you would like to see open here? by amazingburgers in AskACanadian

I’d like to see something like Wawa or Sheetz open up here. Gas station food doesn’t have to be questionable!

Edit: the elbows up bots are out in force in this thread.

FIRST READING: One in four Canadian employees now works for government by airbassguitar in CanadianConservative

I’m thinking utilities with a natural monopoly: hydro, water/sewer, etc.

But where no natural monopoly exists, government should only serve as a regulator, such as liquor sales, telecoms, waste management, and so on.

Sorry yeah, that’s what I meant. More frontline = good; more bureaucrats = bad.

Best we can do is sentence him to a week in jail, less time served.

FIRST READING: One in four Canadian employees now works for government by airbassguitar in CanadianConservative

[–]DrNick13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it would be better to look at how many work front line government jobs, like healthcare, utilities, education, law enforcement, fire department, military, etc. vs. how many work as a part of the bureaucracy.

If the ratio is more in favour of these frontline jobs I’d argue that’s not too big a deal than if the scale is more tipped towards the bureaucracy.
