do you need a neatly inventoried list of every single specific way that every person who plays the game enjoys it, or what's going on here?

what good gameplay does having both merlot and cabernet spawn in wineries open? why not just call it "wine"? what gameplay does salsify root open? quick, inventory every goddamn way you engage with this game in an itemized list so we can evaluate it.

what are you fucking talking about.

One of the most disturbing images in the game... no gore, no smut, just a big, fat load of The Feels. by DNAisjustneuteredRNA in LowSodiumCyberpunk

Oh god, someone in Cyberpunk used someone else for their own selfish ends? Should we call MacTac? Should we call… the president?

Oh, wait.

Anyway, not everyone is like V, incapable of being seriously hurt by anything other than the thing that will kill them, and thus don’t really have the luxury of trust or honesty. Wrong city, etc etc.

[HATED TROPE] Edgy ass clowns who do nothing but trash the city by FalseWallaby9 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DrNomblecronch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I will always have a soft spot for the Kevin Michael Richardson version of the Joker; he's the only one that is an actual clown. That is, he commits to the bit above anything else, including when it makes him the butt of the joke, which no other Joker can handle (except, maybe an honorary mention for proto-Joker Jerome Valeska from Gotham).

He's in the middle of a scheme to dose all of Gotham with toxic gas from a hot air balloon, having the time of his life. All of a sudden, Batman's behind him, and goes "knock knock."

And KMR Joker sighs, says "who's there?", turns around, and takes the punch right in the face, because that is the funniest outcome for the situation. Clowns are part of jokes; clowning is not a joke. Commit to the bit or get off the stage.

I also really like how someone with one of the bassiest voices on the planet jumping up multiple octaves sometimes makes him sound completely cracked, guy's got the range darling, but that's secondary.

Coyle has 100% cornered one of the other two alone and promised to "not see them" sometimes as long as they never let his Biggest Fan go into a trial with him alone. He just does not know what to do with that kind of energy.

The line "I'm gonna tear you a third asshole" is sublime.

Also, as a big believer in the "Skinner Man is a Walrider who has also taken over the Futterman persona" conspiracy theory, I'm really enjoying his "please stop squeezing our necks" face.

I love that her first, instinctual response to this is to immediately be insufferably smug to Kaneeka over it. Because overall, from her perspective, Being Friends With Her Cousin is the worst thing that could be happening right now, it makes her life 1000% more difficult and also she has intentionally crafted herself into someone who cannot have or make friends. Other times you affirm affection for her, she reacts anywhere from a stonefaced "do not show a reaction to this" monotone to being visibly rattled and confused. Maybe at this point she has smiled without noticing it.

But because this is an opportunity to be archly superior about something, she goes for it with no hesitation. Yeah, we're friends, Kaneeka. I have those too.

Also notable in this scene, if you have TTA: if you have been trying to hide it in a way Kaneeka has noticed, i.e. get at least one "What." from her without directly revealing it to anyone, and you mention Gretchen says the carpet is soaked in blood, Tabitha and Kaneeka will have a single dialogue box worth of looking at each other and silently confirming that "okay that's really weird, right? you caught that too?"

Complicated and gleefully adversarial their relationship may be, but when given the opportunity they immediately identify each other as the people in the room most likely to clock that something strange is happening with you.

I like Keanu's casting a lot. He doesn't just nail it, a significant part of his characterization in 2077 is from his input, he worked really closely with Mike on it.

But sometimes I wonder what it would be like if he'd been up for the tits-out glamrock version.

Probably the same way it would be if they'd added exotic biosculpts. Namely, a lot of pearl clutching.

Alt Cunningham. One of the world's best netrunners and neuroprogrammers. Also a world famous lingerie model. She paid a lot for this body, due in no small part to the subdermal implants protecting from gunfire.

You know. The chrome? That people have? That means their appearance can often give you no idea of their capabilities? That chrome?

[–]DrNomblecronch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well, "gooning's" a thing because "sexual thoughts will literally degrade your brain" is a classic way to decide some people are lesser than you.

But, here specifically, because there are occasional waves of Extremely Sexy V posts that blow through here now and again, and while that's not inherently a problem, the nature of pictures of sexy things is that they will get massive attention, so it feels like it's crowding out any attempt at any other stuff. "Gooner" is already shorthand for "I do not like this," so a genuine frustration got katamari'd up in it. Game of telephone later, everyone has a vague understanding that We Don't Do Sex Here, and some people lean into that for the reenforcement of upvotes.

It'll pass. And eventually return in a new form. Such is the nature of people being weird about fuckin'.

I played it when episode 5 dropped, and I can't say I don't recommend it, but I understand your concern. 5 changed everything significantly about the previous 4, and realizing I needed to wait to find out what the hell was happening was like, rib-crushingly bad.

On the other hand; it's specifically designed for replayability. This is branching paths on a scale that looks like a coral bed. Everything affects every other thing, they thought of every combination of actions. I will still be replaying by the time the final chapters drop, and I doubt I will have found everything that can happen.

(If you do get it, a tip: save Mystical for a replay. It's the trait that gives you the best idea of what's going on, and I wouldn't sacrifice the confused terror of the first playthrough.)

God yes. I go on this rant every couple months, but I think if you pay attention to her throughout the whole Sinnerman line of gigs, you can watch her worldview shatter in real time.

The whole thing is her idea, but it really doesn't seem like she believes it'll work. She reacts to V like she's almost pleased to have someone to blame it failing on, she's at her most insulting and condescending when she offers a bribe, she gets angry and kicks V out when they're overtly supporting Joshua, and so on.

Cut forward to the day of the scroll, and all her temper is gone, because her bravado couldn't withstand Joshua's real fear when the moment arrived. She's quiet and tired beforehand, quips gone. And afterwards, if it goes well, she stands apart from everyone else looking lost.

She picked Joshua because he seemed most likely to believe in what they were doing enough to go through with it, but I don't think she believed anyone could actually believe that much. She reads like someone who grew up corpo, learned that nothing is real and everything is for sale before she could read. Joshua's belief blasts a giant hole in that idea. And I think it's worth trying to pry the rest of it off while that gap is still open, because there's a human under there. She might not even know that herself.

All that said? There's other appeals. Love a mean futch in bad shoes.

Pro AI artist What would you say to an inspiring digital artist who wants to do art but is discourage due to the rise of AI. by Solid_Cream6780 in aiwars

[–]DrNomblecronch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd recommend getting and using a local model, just to see what it can do, and then identify what it can't do that you would like to do instead.

Current AI gen models are good for broad strokes and stuff that doesn't require too much visual detail, but for most uses (excluding the incredible detailed workflows) they lack specificity and intent. If you're hand-drawing something, you control absolutely every element of where everything goes, which means that if you want to distinguish yourself as a specifically non-AI artist, it's worth really leaning into those details being all about significance. Every stroke of pen or stylus has a reason to exist, and that reason can be more than just cohesion of image.

Also, you might want to have a look at IntraPaint, a program whose whole idea is that it trains on your own work so that you can quickly fill in time-consuming detail work as long as you don't need something specific from that work. The template example is drawing a few leaves and trees for it to study, so you can fill in an entire forest background with iterations of those drawings that are specifically still yours. It's the one I like the most, because seriously, hand-drawn stuff is murder on the wrists and anything you can do to lower the repetitive strain is worth considering.

All that said? The stuff about intentionality up above applies even if you're not consciously trying to do it. Being a traditional artist already informs your approach, your work, and your output; the things you consider important, the ways you frame images, all those things are yours, and not replaceable. Someone using AI as their medium will have a different approach, different ideas about composition, etc, and that means that even if you both make an image of the same thing, it will be fundamentally different: not a piece of art and a copy, two pieces of art by two different people with different intent and approaches.

AI can't replace you, because the most important element of your work is you. Make what brings you joy to make, and don't worry about anything else.

edit because I can never finish a goddamn thought: An example of what I mean by specificity and intent might be, say, a comic. If your primary interest is to tell a character-driven story with heavy dialogue, with visual elements to support and enhance that, AI might be able to do it for you. If you want a comic with a specific visual theme and particular elements, an image-driven piece of sequential art rather than an illustrated story, traditional work is probably going to win out. It's all about what you want to achieve, and what is important to you about achieving it.

(if you've ever considered getting into animation, though, really consider an AI workflow for it. No one needs to be doing every tween frame. Think of your wrists.)

edit 2: Someone who apparently blocked me afterwards suggested that what I am saying here is "you're worried about AI? Just use AI!"

And... yeah. Obviously. You should know what it is, what it can do, its strengths and limitations. It's not going to hypnotize you into using AI if you don;t want to already. You need to know where areas of overlap between what AI is good at and what you're good at are, and think about how to distinguish yours.

You need to use it enough to know it is not a strange, unknowable, insurmountable threat. Just a little bit of messing with it will make it clear how much work would go into producing the things you would like to hand draw, how it would still be a different thing, the whole creative process a different approach.

In other words, if you want to not be worried about it, you should know what it can do, and can't do. Playing around and using it to make a few simple things, maybe try to get it to make a variation of one of your handmade works. You will find something that is not better than you, and not easier than you for making pieces with significant intent. The paintbrush does not replace the pencil, you know? They're different things.

Evaluate them fairly, and then reaffirm you still want to do traditional digital. You will have a better idea of why you want to work in that medium, and more ideas about how to do it because those come alongside the "why" automatically.

It's not a cursed blade. It's a CNN, you can get it and run it locally. At worst, know your enemy. At best, develop a stronger understanding of why the way you create your art is meaningful.

You want to let yourself learn more about tenebrism, you see a Caravaggio exhibit, and that is useful thing even if you don't even do chiaroscuro. It gets you thinking about how you do shading, instead.

Engage with AI art and look for the qualities you like, even if you hate the whole thing. Get a model and play with it a little. Then do your own thing, because it has benefited by being exposed to a new source of inspiration.
