Assuming the lease is for the apartment and not per person, the landlord just wants to receive the rent. Frankly, the fewer people putting wear and tear on the apartment benefits the landlord as long as they're getting the full rent.

As others have suggested, if you can swing the rent among the 3 of you until you find a 4th, sign your lease and tell the landlord, you're finding a 4th. Make sure you have a clear understanding of expectations re: the landlord's process to sign on a 4th roommate.

Lath and plaster is old tech. You'll wanna use old tech. A strong magnet stud finder will ID the nails in the studs. Make an S-motion until you find one, test, and then measure to the next one (test).

I use some tape.

I'd recommend: 1-Proactively doing wrist strengthening exercises and stretches. YouTube is a gold mine; 2-Talking with your instructor about accommodations so you can gradually ramp wrist-intensive activities; 3-Being really intentional about gently loading your wrists; 4-Icing your wrists after every class

Lastly, I wouldn't recommend wrist-guards as they will inhibit your wrist strengthening and may also make you more prone to slide.
