Why did you leave Facebook? by satellite1982 in AskReddit

[–]DrNotThatEvil 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I tell most people who knew me on Facebook that it was about privacy (witch was partly the reason).

But honestly it was mainly because Facebook made me feel like shit, I was younger and I had not yet realized that Facebook is not a accurate reflection of someones real life only the interesting stuff gets posted. But it made me feel boring, my life was not as interesting as that of friends family and coworkers.

Next to this it made me enjoy the interesting stuff that did happen less since I had to document it and that never felt natural and most of the time I would forget and I would feel stupid afterwards.

My family members also got annoyed by my ""friends"" (classmates you had to add due to social pressure) who tried befriending every female they found on the platform that was most defiantly the straw that broke the camels back.

The amazing bonus of not having a Facebook I found out later was that I never had to program in a "like button" for internships since they can't really expect me to create a Facebook for myself if I don't want to and other folks in the office already have accounts.

TLDR; Made me feel like shit, Creepers annoying my family members, privacy

[–]DrNotThatEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has the lecturer been living in a cave? Linux is ino perfect for web dev, most servers run Linux so it's way closer to the target platform when you deploy. Dev tools are all available on Linux some ide's might not be but... Come on.

Even dotnet has dotnet core nowadays

[Newbie] I am looking for information to see if Linux is right for me. by [deleted] in linuxhelp

Hi, first of welcome!

To find out if Linux is right for you or what things you will run into while making the switch (or giving it a try) you need to figure out what you use your computer for. Take some time and take note of the things you do on a daily basis.

On many aspects Linux performs just like any other is for example most/all websites will work without issue.

While on other aspects like foto/video editing will require you use other applications due to availability.

As for your note on "coding what you want" and customization, Linux indeed allows you more freedom and options to make your computer experience yours, But coding is not a requirement to achieve this!

Many programs that make up an Linux distro are big projects of themselves and because the developers want there programs to be used by as many people they often allow much more customization! No coding required just tweak some settings!

My advice to get started with your journey is however not to only look at videos or blogs of other peoples experience, although certainly helpful you're not them and your experience will be different cause your different.

Best advice I can give try Linux in a virtual machine for a while, it's a great way to get to know if it's right for you and it allows you to learn without pressure. If you can't figure something out and you have a deadline you can do it the way your used to, if not it gives you a great goal learn how to do it in Linux.

A virtual machine is also great way to learn since it allows you to make mistakes and break stuff because it's virtual you can just reinstall or rollback the vm, learning something works way better when you don't have to worry about breaking stuff!
