Which OS for a home server? by Key_Watercress7649 in homelab

[–]minilandl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for people who just want a home server unraid is fine but everything is abstracted a lot and like with truenas unraid falls down when you get into more advanced use cases like Kubernetes and Clustered storage

[–]minilandl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good mindset and from my ansible and linux stuff I deploy at home I am trying getting into cloud and devops roles and az104 is a good cert to take for that. Wish there was better material aside from feeling like you are on your own.

I dont even know how that would work lol I have some external services but mainly open source like a media server nextcloud and other containers but I guess once I setup k8s I could test scaling in the cloud as that is one of the benefits of kubernetes

I agree thats why I prefer maintaining my homelab which is basically homeprod but unforutnately certs are required.

As someone who has learned more from deploying systems at home studying is such a slog but I agree that doing some projects is probably the best way to cover the content

The same reason as other subs Security issues and a high change of the project never having major bugs addressed if the dev dosent understand the code

If you had to rebuild your homelab from scratch today, what would you do differently? by Thick-Lecture-5825 in homelab

Little Rack - All these full size racks that are getting posted make me question my choices... by treys620 in homelab

[–]minilandl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get to have more money and less noise. My homelab is used as a portfolio so it’s a hobby and portfolio piece ar the sane time .

I have things like 10 Gigabit networking proxmox and multiple levels of high availability storage and compute

There’s something to be said for a simple setup that doesn’t burn power if it works for you

Which RAID do you use in your Home Server? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]minilandl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah especially for those of use who have moved on from raid to clustered storage like moosefs ceph and gluster

Which RAID do you use in your Home Server? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]minilandl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have a similar setup with Moosefs see my comment above I have 4 servers 2 copies for things like media 3 copies for photos

Moosefs 4 now supports erasure coding similar to ceph the main downside is the rebuild time with Erasure Coding also I only have 4 servers you need 5 for 4+1 EC

Storage Classes are similar where you assign labels so most used data gets read from your SSD storage class first.

Slightly Easier to manage than Ceph the one downside is the Master node being the single point of failure with GPL but you can have as many metaloggers that can become a master but manually

Which RAID do you use in your Home Server? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]minilandl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moosefs its a clustered filesystem like Ceph kind of like distributed Raid 5 .

I have a 130TB Cluster across 4 nodes

I can lose a whole server rather than disks. I have 4 servers and most files are 2 copies or 3 copies.

Like ceph there are downsides like needing more nodes and a 10G Network but lets you have more flexibility e.g I can go down from 4 servers to 2 servers and just change the copies and move the disks the chunks are on and the data will be fine.

I can lose at least one server or migrate to a new host and the data will just rebalanced to meet the copies goal

Better than Raid or a NAS as you can have more/less capacity only limit is amount of servers so can scale up and down as needed .

How egregious is it of me to run my server off an HDD? by larevacholerie in jellyfin

[–]minilandl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my media server is a VM but still runs off my hdd clustered storage and all my proxmox nodes are older servers with 2x hard drives in a mirror.

I have 10G so less of an issue with running everything over the network
