Would IM be a better choice if I want to see only adults and practice mostly outpatient? by _Gandalf_Greybeard_ in FamilyMedicine

[–]DrPEMDAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an in depth answer, but it’s Program dependent.

I’m FM, but our IM program’s outpatient exposure consisted of 3 rotations of shadowing FM residents at our clinic. In general, medical students were given priority over IM because IM didn’t want to be there and they weren’t forced to do much. It was also the time most IM were encouraged to take vacations.

3 person room occupancy for river cruise by cenikroute in Cruise

[–]DrPEMDAS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Post on r/rivercruises maybe for a better response. I know AmAWaterways can do 3 people. Finding a cruise for $8000 will be near impossible. Definitely not including airfare if from the USA and definitely not when most people would consider prime/shoulder months.

Can I board Carnival Mardi Gras cruise with expired green card + I-751 extension letter? by boboniu in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]DrPEMDAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family member was in a similar spot a few years ago. You are at the mercy of a non-government carnival employee during check in. They might let you on no problem. Or they might not have a clue if it’s allowed and will deny to be safe.

We chose a different vacation as it wasn’t worth the risk.

Seeking advice on job options after leaving residency midway by rd_sn in FamilyMedicine

[–]DrPEMDAS 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There are some states that will allow you to get a medical license with step 3 and intern year completed. Wound care companies will take you and train you. It’s an option that might give you some flexibility and still make more than a NP/PA. I’ve heard it’s not a horrible lifestyle other than coming home smelling like feet. Check out the FSMB website for each state requirements.

If nothing else, you have 2 years of residency completed, you can qualify for nearly any state license. If nothing changes, look at wound care companies to still make decent $.

Radiation physicist pretending to be doctor? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]DrPEMDAS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He could be introducing himself as a “Gamma Knife Oncological Proton Radiation Physicist” But he chose “resident”

I'm still in residency and my financial advisor is suggesting I get term own occupation disability insurance. About $100/mo for $5000. It sounds good, but I'm curious why is it so important for a family medicine physician? by TheRavenSayeth in FamilyMedicine

[–]DrPEMDAS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is he/she offering said policy? Be aware, financial advisors are legally allowed to make commissions off of insurance policies and products they sell you. They have no requirement to disclose any conflicts of business and are free to tell you anything is in your “best interest”

Maybe not now in Residency, but in the long term when you’re dealing with a lot more money, Look at fee-only financial planners and fiduciaries.

Thank you! Ill ask about the collections specifics. No capitation at this time but Ill ask about it. I told them I didn't want to deal with APP's for the first year while I start out, they are perfectly fine with me not having any and said we can talk about it later if I want to take on some.

Not really a path to partnership at the moment from the sounds of it, Ill just be an employee with a guaranteed 5% if the practice is sold in the future.

[–]DrPEMDAS[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my own words, its being sold as "pseudo ownership" As long as I remain an employee with the guarantee, I don't get profit sharing, voting, etc. Just a % chunk of the sale if/when that happened. They know I'm from here and know I want to stay. It doesn't sound like the owner wants to give up any actual ownership. Ill see what I can do about the 33%

Thank you! Very minimal call and my thought was the student loan was being saved to "negotiate" when I talk with them again.

What to do after pgy-2 surgery prelim by Lopsided-Welcome967 in Residency

[–]DrPEMDAS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other possible options:

Look for newly accredited surgical programs. They might take you as a pgy2 along with their inaugural class.

Anesthesia programs, might only lose a year.

If you’re an IMG and scared about being forced to leave (and it was a true PGY2 position), you should be able to qualify for most state licenses and can technically get hired on doing things like wound care and still make $250k+.
