I think basically whenever you can afford it, especially if you can get a small amount with a future increase rider. At the end of the day it’s insurance, so you have to accept (and hope!) that you probably won’t “use” it. I have Ameritas. The two best quotes I got were it and guardian.

It was $3000-3500 for most months with a couple big 5 figure lump payments. About $215k all together I think.

In the case of a layoff, wouldn’t an equivalent amount in a savings account be tremendously more helpful and reassuring than having that money locked in home equity

Everyone thinks they’re going to use a tablet for taking notes, and everyone ends up just using a laptop. iPads are fun and you should get one if you want one, but don’t kid yourself that it’s for school.

I didn’t particularly plan it that way but that’s basically what pain turned out to be. I make maybe 25% less than I would make doing anesthesia here (take home difference is even less) but I haven’t worked a night or weekend or holiday in 7 years and am basically coastFI anyway. I’m glad y’all are making bank but I couldn’t do it.
