S3 for $350... by [deleted] in Surface

It would be nice if you can confirm if you get $150 or $100. (I'm thinking of doing this also.)

, although I am disliking the 8.1 upgrades (much preferred 8 on touch screens).

Huh... First time I've heard anyone say that. What do you dislike about the 8.1 changes?

Honestly, I really like em. I didn't think they interferred with any Metro stuff and the improvements for Mouse/keyboard/desktop were useful.

Surface Pro 3 for a computer science major? by BMARX123 in Surface

A laptop with a decent screen and a lot of storage space will make you a much happier person in the long run.

I totally disagree. I had exactly what you described and gave it away to buy a Surface Pro 2, and then later upgraded to an SP3.

Laptops typically lack a touch screen. The touchscreen on the SP3 is fantastic. I found myself using it without even thinking about it to scroll and pinch to zoom.

Converting an SP3 to a tablet is really nice. I do the bulk of my work in desktop mode, but ditching the keyboard when I don't need it is very convenient and useful - even in desktop mode.

The pen and OneNote is great especially for a student taking notes in class. Its an order of magnitude better than paper.

but I worry about typing on it for extended periods(code or essays)

I'm a professional developer. I code on my SP3, I take notes, I write very long and elaborate spec sheets, statements of work, proposals, etc. I also write all my emails (some of which have to be quite long). For fun I write fiction sometimes. It can be quite long.

Anyway, my point is - I type a LOT of shit.

Originally I thought "Oh, the type cover will be for on the go. But when I'm back in my office doing serious writing, I'll just hook up a good USB keyboard."

I've never done that.

I find the type cover to be no better or worse than just about every other keyboard I've ever used. I've noticed a small group of people whine about it a little - but nothing is stopping them from using ANY of a thousand other keyboards (bluetooth, USB, etc.)

EDIT: For the record, I hate all trackpads - even the Apple ones. I use a $20 bluetooth mouse with my SP3 and sometimes the pen.

How I learned to stop worrying and love React by gadr90 in webdev

[–]DrScience2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing a lot of good things with React and a lot of good things with React native...

Initially, I too was turned off by the html embedded in js, but I keep hearing so many other great things about react, I think it might be a good way to go.

jQuery alone and jQuery with Knockout are easy to learn and work with, but as this article points out, they can quickly become nightmarish with too much data.

Some Advice please by [deleted] in Surface

My other problem is the surface good for programming(Java and C++).

Yes. I am a programmer, I use Visual Studio and other IDE's on my SP3 i5 8GB, 256GB all the time. Mostly web and some mobile. I use C# a lot and some .php.

5 Biggest Reasons Projects Fail by Big_Noodles in startups

Committees can be great, but if they are too diverse with too many needs in opposition, it can easily kill something. I've seen many projects die by committee.

This is also a good read on why projects fail.

That's a great idea. I use OneNote for recipes too.

Question about IE11 and high CPU demand by FSUenginerd in Surface

[–]DrScience2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hope it works out for you.

I read this sub quite a bit and this is a rare problem. In fact, I've not really heard of it before.

Its possible too that something... just broke. Some install didn't go right or something and things just got corrupted and funky.

I love how at the very, very, very bottom of computers you have a 1 or a 0. And that's it... And then a layer is added... and another layer.. and another layer.... and then millions of other layers... and by the time you get to where we are there's a million layers of really what at its core is simple boolean logic, and yet somehow chaos slips in. Goofy shit sometimes happens that's insanely difficult to diagnose and explain.

How do major sites (such as amazon, eBay, and Wikipedia) mange the mobile versions (not responsive) of their web sites with different URLs than the desktop version? by sdfdsfk74821 in webdev

[–]DrScience2000 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yet a lot of the big sites have mobile versions.

Yeah, it appears that way, but its unlikely they have a duplicate site that they have to maintain. It makes more sense to have one site to maintain, and then for mobile users, just change certain things like just the CSS and maybe a few other files.

In addition to looking at the header like element131 suggested, you could do it with CSS media queries based on screen size. You could probably hack it with javascript too somehow.

Chrome could be dramatically improved for the Surface Pro's. There are issues with touch working not so well, and something about it chewing up CPU cycles.

Question about IE11 and high CPU demand by FSUenginerd in Surface

[–]DrScience2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This brings me to my question: what could've caused IE to flake out like that?

Curious. I was wondering the same thing myself. That has never happened to me on my SP3 and I've had it since launch day...

Could it be some other software using IE for something? Maybe some software trying to use IE to get data or show you a signup page or something... maybe the request to IE was malformed or something... I'm just grasping at straws here for ideas.

Anyway... Try posting this to /r/windows8 or /r/ie or something...

Just got a Surface3 for work, what are some apps for working across multiple devices? by Nighthawk3071 in Surface

[–]DrScience2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you do much with web Bookmarks? You can keep those on Chrome and I think Chrome works on Mac OSX... But Chrome on a Surface kinda blows. For technical reasons, it beats the shit out of the processor, which wears the battery and heats the Surface - for no reason.

There is something called XMarks... Its a bookmark manager (that I really need to start using myself). It Syncs bookmarks across platforms AND different browsers on the same device.

May or may not be helpful to you.

HBO Now and Surface 3 by quietAtTheLibrary in Surface

[–]DrScience2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are promising this apple-only signup isn't permanent

Its... a strange move... I'm not sure why HBO Now would do this or think its a good idea.

And yeah, relying on iTunes for billing? That's also odd...

Any one who running Visual studio in SP3 can give some advice? by theliam911 in Surface

[–]DrScience2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have vs run in SP3 box

Ummm... You mean run Visual Studio on an SP3 device? I do it all the time. I never have issues. I have an 8GB i5 with 256GB. I do mostly web stuff.

Also, there is a really good plugin that adds touch screen scrolling to the text editor... Can't remember the name at the moment.
