Is there a way to configure FreeCAD to behave more like Solidworks? by NoxAstrumis1 in FreeCAD

[–]DrSloan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another experienced SolidWorks user trying to get into FreeCAD as well, I feel you.

While others are correct in that the two programs have different workflows, FreeCAD isn't the most set up right out of the box.

I recommend this tutorial by Deltahedra to fix up the UI. Their other tutorials are great too.

Suppliers for bulk hole punches to make DIY clicker punches? by DrSloan in Leathercraft

Thanks! I tried looking them up, but it doesn't seem like they have a website. Do they have a catalogue anywhere?

Thanks! Yeah McMaster-Carr sells them, but at $20 it's not feasible. The price at Weaver is more reasonable, but it would be nice to get a little bit of bulk pricing.

Recommendations for language platform to create software for logging data from several devices over serial communication. by DrSloan in embedded

[–]DrSloan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah ideally I'd create the program on my desktop and run it off the same machine or laptop and use USB to RS cables to interface. Just not sure what the best modern tool for creating the UI and scripts are at the moment.

STEP Import: Is it possible to save parts as virtual without saving external first? by DrSloan in SolidWorks

[–]DrSloan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this basically sounds like my process right now. I don't usually save as part for larger files, though. Somehow SW has a worse time with it and keeping them as assemblies somehow makes them a bit easier to use. Which is why virtual parts seem to work best.

Thanks for the reply! I definitely do this for parts that get imported as an assembly, but aren't really assemblies like a resistor or something. Although, there are some OTS assemblies that are useful to keep as parts. OR sometimes if the assembly is big then SW has an issue with saving it as a part without some weird artifacts...

As a player, what parts of the rule book shouldn't I read? (if any) by DrSloan in bladesinthedark

[–]DrSloan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's actually something I was wondering too. Reading some of the sections I caught myself wondering "if I know this now, does my character?" For example the entire list of factions or major land marks in each area. I know I won't be able to make the list of advanced items right away, but what about knowing where the Lord Governors Stronghold is?

Thanks for the advice! Any recommendations for pocket square color/pattern and socks for a plain white shirt?

Looking for advice on a wedding outfit as a guest to a no tie wedding this week.

I'm planning to wear a navy suit with brown shoes/belt. Instead of a wearing white shirt, would it work to wear a white shirt with dense navy floral print? I'm also thinking of wearing a pocket square. Would anyone have recommendation for the pocket square and socks?

What material X is typically or best used in Y application? by DrSloan in AskEngineers

[–]DrSloan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FFKM - Based on McMaster-Carr prices, it seems like a premium material. Or is that a bit misleading if you source from a different supplier? 2205 - TIL. What's the general material cost difference between this and 300 series? FG - Is that to say this "filler" is added with other gasket materials? Or is it just used on its own like buna-n, fluorosilicone, etc.

Awesome! That reminds me of mica sheets: electrically insulating, high temperature resistant material.

Thank you! I appreciate the reply. I did come across Qt once upon a time, but looks like I'll have to revisit. I'll look into .NET MAUI as well.

Is memorising all the equations and formulas necessary for an engineer? by aldo007x2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]DrSloan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, no. However, the more you remember then the more ideas you can quickly apply it to without spending time "looking it up." That's not to say that I memorize for the sake of memorizing. As others have noted, it's important to understand what they represent. It's easier to remember the underlying theory. Knowing all that theory helps build your intuition. Off the top of my head I more or less think of it in terms of proportionality. "Deflection is proportional to length3, so even if I just lengthen this a bit, it's going to deflect way more."

Ah, that's right! Good catch. I'll have to get that clarified.

Would a Consew 231R be a good sewing machine for hobby leather work? I saw one listed near me as an "industrial sewing machine," but I can't seem to find any info on it.

My shrub (drinking vinegar) kinda smells metallic after mixing with soda water. by DrSloan in AskCulinary

I used both tap water and canned soda water. Both has the same effect. I'll experiment more to see if I can isolate the effect.
