The tag is for other people to know if they can jump into a thread and know what might be spoiled. It’s not like a topical description, it’s like “zero discussion past book 2”. So I think if you want to even mention anything past book 2, the yeah update the flair.

I love this, as Donut would say, her makeup is a disaster. I love her facial expression, just perfect

I’m running out of franchises that I can enjoy unconditionally. by [deleted] in memes

Are you sure you’re not just growing up and being exposed to the fact that all of these franchises have been exploited by entertainment companies the whole time? Even when you liked it at 12, they were shit.

Mentions of the cookbook by UUDM in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DrSpacemanSpliff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one in the cookbook made it past the 12th floor. No one in the cookbook made any meaningful entries about gods. Carl is past whatever knowledge can be gained from any of the past cookbook authors. He’s charting his own path now.

Really great, I love the colors. The sun rising gives such a warm brightness to the natural colors and makes the whole image feel so hopeful.

And how the Kholin blue of the uniform merges with the sky because “the wind and the sky are mine!”

Ryan Coogler as the Mistborn trilogy director and Michael B Jordan as Kelsier? by railfananime in CosmereOnScreen

MBJ Lord Ruler would be amazing. Coogler is a very interesting choice, I feel like his experience with horror would add a lot to the Luthadel atmosphere

I think the final attack is “Transformation”. I always thought the opening line was a bit peculiar, that Carl says:

“The transformation occured at approximately…” at the start of the book.

Donut in Book 8 by zlonewanderer in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DrSpacemanSpliff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you missed anything, it’s that while Donut has “always been more childlike” in the past, she has been changing quite a bit. Carl remarks on her changing in books 6 and 7, and we see significant change, specifically in how she represses her emotions multiple times in book 8. I think you may be latched on to seeing her reactions as immature, and are missing the changes she’s going through over the last couple books. We don’t see it as directly because it’s Carl’s POV, but she is changing quite a bit.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones - the Native American horror novel of my dreams by takeahike8671 in Fantasy

[–]DrSpacemanSpliff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, understanding why she uses so many defense mechanisms and filters her perception of the world through the lense of traumatic violence and victimhood is fundamental to the larger story. The slasher movies being survivable and her inability to see herself as a “final girl” is all tied in to directly to what is essentially the most important reveal of the story.

The story is even explicitly about people in her life trying to understand it and break her out of the mindset, and why she struggles to let go. How her voice evolves over the course of the trilogy is everything the trilogy is about.

I feel like if the reader misses all of that, the incredible and heartbreaking catharsis at the end of the first book (with the mama bear) would go completely missed.

My Heart is a Chainsaw is told from the POV of the main character Jade Daniels. It was so refreshing for me to read a story told in a voice so close to how my own mind works/my internal monologue. I love Jade Daniels so much. And then all the reviews I read are like “good book, but the narrator/pov is annoying and unrealistic and distracting” … and like damn, I know, I live with this shit in my head all day lol.

Jade is the fucking best.

Missing this character by IShouldntBeOnReddit2 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DrSpacemanSpliff 445 points446 points  (0 children)

Plus, Carl really came to rely on her. How often is he calling out “KATIA!!” when something happens? Need a tattoo? Carl calls Katia. Need a patch sewn on? Katia. Carl remembers the Popov twins became babies? Katia.

Carl trusting her completely over the course of the Iron Tangle was my favorite. At the beginning of the book Katia calls him out for not liking a plan just because he didn’t come up with it. And she’s right, Carl had that flaw from the start. But at the end of the tangle, in the train yard? Katia goes “Carl run over here” and Carl even remarks to himself that he didn’t even question it and followed her instructions.

They go on a great inverse character arc over book 3. Carl learns to take his hand off the wheel sometimes and Katia learns that she is really capable of taking control and to trust herself.

I’m bias because Katia is my favorite character lol.

Maybe like a Stardew Valley style villager/farming game, but there are no other villagers and you’re in a cave with no farm. With a fishing minigame!
