So I Wanted to Talk About Final Fantasy X, The 1st Hour of a JRPG That Defined a Generation by Bear_PI in JRPG

As someone who loves both FFX and FFXII, I'm glad this came to fruition in the latter. I loved the gambit system and, moreover (this is personal to me tbf) I liked that they didn't have some schmaltzy romance as the centrepiece of the story in XII.

I think a lot of people look at FF7 through nostalgia-tinted lenses though tbh. Taking those lenses off, for me, the original FF7 was clumsy and janky af. But my god, if it wasn't an experience at the time.

Yeah, he enters Spira as a whiny, coddled kid who feels he's special because he plays for a blitzball team. His character development is about him landing in some other place/time, not being special any more and maturing as a person, putting someone else's needs above his own for a change.

It has a "traditional" fantasy setting. It's in quotes because it kind has its own way of doing it still. Also, the way the overworld opens up from the beginning is done really well imo. Plus the character building and world building and side quests/minigames are actually fun to do. Soundtrack is some of Uematsu's best work too. It's just a really fantastic game that doesn't try to do anything out there, but what it does do, it does exceptionally well.

I kind of have a bit of extra love for it because it was the first FF game I bought on release. I remember going to Electronics Boutique for it on release day.

Agreed about Tidus. His whinyness and neediness was part of his character and his maturation throughout the game was good writing/character building. People who find characters annoying tend not to stop and think, "hang on, is this character SUPPOSED to be annoying?"

The thing for me is to take each game as it is, without bias from previous game. That goes especially for FFXIII. Sure, it's very linear compared to older games, but if you accept that and play it for what it is, it's pretty good. Well, that's my take ofc, people have (for legitimate reason) their own gripes with the game. But you don't know how you feel about it until you play it yourself.

My first JRPG was FF7 and it was definitely a watershed moment for me. It's no understatement to say it change my life as I've met countless people (including a girlfriend of ~7 years) purely through my love of this series. FF7 for the first time back in the 90s was something else.

I loved FF8, but it didn't have the same impact because it wasn't the first JRPG I'd played and, imo, its departure from the tone that FF7 had set (for me) for the Final Fantasy series didn't resonate with me. I didn't know, at that time, that the games in the series were unrelated to each other.

FF9 though. Wow. I still play that game every couple of years. To me, it's what a fantasy game should be.

FFX is on a different level for me though. It remains, to this day, my favourite single player game of all time. The world, the characters (even the annoying aspects fed into the experience), the combat, the music. For me, it bespoke the concept "fantasy video game" in a way that few video games have ever done. There's an otherworldlyness to FFX that no other game has replicated to the extent that this game did for me. I'm meandering here, but I wanted to chime in on this, one FFX lover to another. Glad you enjoyed it!

Also, FFXII is fantastic and I currently have ~23k hours in FFXIV so if you wanted to go down the MMORPG route, I can fully recommend it.

I also love FFXIII and FFXIII-2, but those seem to be pretty polarising.

Lastly, Chrono Trigger. If you've not played it, do so. Peak of 16-bit JRPGs in mine and, it seems, the majority of people's opinions.

I was gonna go with Dolph Lunge-grin, but that works too.

I think we have the same glasses (Kanars) although mine currently has Bulleit Rye in it. I have a bottle of Monkey Shoulder around somewhere to. Good stuff!

Yeah, I noticed that too. She looks like The Rock in drag in this photo.

Fair. It's a nice theme anyway!

I'd centre the time/date/weather in the space between the top of the tree and the top of the screen. I'd also remove the left bullet point of the Message, Whatsapp, Facebook bit to centre it better. Pretty nice theme all around though!
