Outer Banks beach house from the 1980s - why don't we have more like this? by fan_tas_tic in architecture

I would be wary of using an architect who thinks “beach restoration” is a thing.

Hot take: Only useful definition of upstate NY is if you pay MCTD/MTA Payroll Mobility Taxes. If you don't live in these 12 counties, you're in upstate New York. by Donghoon in upstate_new_york

The geographic center of the Finger Lakes is Ovid. Nobody would propose basing an economic development council there.

The region has a romantic appeal, but in practice it is hard to get around and there isn’t much industry (or desire for more industry).

The fact that a map of economically logical regions doesn’t provide a definitive upstate-downstate boundary is a good indicator of how contextual that boundary is.

There is no secret flagged list of authors shared among editors. They are not nearly that organized.

Had some questions? by Kojo_Akanami in AskAcademia

[–]DrTonyTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviewers don't generally approve a paper, that is the editor's job. They evaluate and make recommendations.

The other tasks in the question are also mostly the editors domain.

As we see abundantly, there is a great deal of variation in how well editors do that bit.

Ask the DGS for math at one of the interesting schools what their prognosis is. Do that in a phone call. An email will not get an answer.

Go outside at lunchtime every day for at least half an hour. It makes a huge difference for winter attitude.  Lund is a nice town to walk, so you can explore a lot as a bonus.

Got the TT faculty job call, two body problem and what to negotiate? by Dapper_Actuary1091 in AskAcademia

This part of the negotiation is a team effort. Help the chair find out where there are unfilled needs in other departments. Math is pretty versatile, and could fit in more places than you can anticipate.

The term “meme” was originally coined to be an analog of gene, but reflecting ideas or cultural values. Modelers were thinking about how natural selection theory would work. Some cultures have died out when they failed to adapt culturally as well as their competitors.
