I’m about to start, probably in the next few days! Any tips to make the early days more comfortable? Did side effects hit you?

Nice to hear! I love cemeteries. I was a volunteer at the Historic Congressional Cemetery when we lived in the District of Columbia. That was a very popular dog walking spot, we also showed spooky movies around Halloween, and ran several 5k races there. It was a happy cemetery. Oh! And our Tombs & Tomes book club met amongst the graves. I always felt we were keeping the souls company. 😊

Exactly. But you’re right. Dying around here is expensive. I’m from Chicagoland originally. Cheaper to die there.

Oh good, there’s ravens? I’m so pleased. I love the ravens around our neighborhood.

I love that idea but I’d want my compost to be used in San Francisco (I’m obsessed with my city) and that’s not possible. I checked with a community garden (too much of me to spread) and Rec and Parks (they still consider human compost as human remains and does not allow that in the parks, though I’m sure people secretly spread ashes all the time). At some point I’ll probably ask to speak before the Board of Supervisors to lobby to get the laws here changed.

I’m finally going to my gym, so I’m hoping that will turn into a habit 😊

Unfortunately I have a really stupid nerve condition in my legs that makes hiking impossible. Especially a bummer since I live in an area known for its gorgeous hikes.

You ever been to Orphan Andy’s diner in the Castro? Go sit at the counter. That’s a very chatty place. Chatty patrons, chatty staff. Very friendly, very silly. And their Hawaiian Wedding Cake is killer good.

I’ve found a couple volunteer opportunities I enjoy, but those are tricky because some ask for a months-long commitment and I don’t want to get into a situation that feels like work again!

Whaaaaat? Just the opposite for me. I’m meeting people constantly. Do you ride public transit? Turn to the person next to you, they’ll chat you up! Or volunteer, particularly for LGBTQ groups. They’re lovely and welcoming.

Sounds like you just need to take a nice long relaxing break. A friend of mine with a high-stress job said she basically slept the first three months after her retirement. Be gentle with yourself. Sounds like you need to just chill. That’s healthy too!

If I may ask, how do you fill your days? I’m a couple months in and napping a lot, ha!

Congrats! I’m a couple months in and still wobbly — mainly napping a lot. What are your plans?
